Piker Race (05/22) take 2
« on: May 18, 2016, 01:25:59 pm »
Last week was a blow out only one person tried to fly in that windy mess they called a weekend. Not naming any names (cough Frank cough)

This weekend is looking much better for our first race of the season. So charge you batteries and get your planes ready.

We'll see you all this Sunday at 1:00

Greg

Yesssss! Sunday.  I'll be there.

Does this mean I beat Mike before I even fly? :D

You can't beat me in the air... So enjoy.

Glenn, Simon, and I turned some laps a couple times today. I wish I could make it tomorrow. It's so much fun.

Takeoffs are optional. Landings are mandatory.

Piker Race- Take 2:

Simon wins 'cause he was the only one who could finish the course at full speed.  Glenn, Simon, Greg and I drew heats.  The first race was Pogomania with Glenn and me.  Take-offs were to the north because of the strong winds (mild in my books) , around the north pylon backwards, then around the south pylon the normal way (counter-clockwise). On the second lap, Glenn took a big bite out of my starboard elevator half, his motor shook itself apart and landed.  I finished the race at 3/4 throttle not knowing whether I sustained any damage.  The plane handled differently but no real problem.
Lap counting was done by Graham because he was the only one of us who could count to 10. :D

The second race was Greg H. and Simon.  After a scrambly take-off, Greg got control back but could not keep the plane in the air for more than a few laps and landed.  Simon flew the 10 laps at full speed.

A fun afternoon.

Now need to get my plane fixed for Orangeville on June 4.

It was so much fun! Great to be racing EF1.

Just so people know, I ran the full 10 laps flat out and did a 1m27s for the race. It was very windy but that's almost half a minute slower than the Piker class planes.

After the race it was great to re-maiden Ken Colemans Invictus (a.k.a the one I crashed and Frank fixed.) We did a few laps on 3S and then a shake down on 4S. Hardly needed any trim which is testament to Frank's repair.

It's great to be racing again!

View from the repair shop:

A close call!! :P

Just took apart my Pogo stab/elevator.  The right half appeared a bit chewed and half the right elevator half was missing.
Here was the real damage:
- the leading edge of the stab broke clean through at the fuselage
- 2 of the 4 stab ribs disintegrated but stayed inside the covering.
- the trailing edge was 90% cut through.  10 percent of the trailing edge fibres stopped the right stab from blowing away.

Good thing I throttled back to 3/4 throttle after Glenn ditched or this stab would have disintegrated.  These planes have marginal tail surface area to begin with.

Note: I once flew my Hammer (42" span, racing 25, 4S, 8x8 APC, hand-launch) and the right elevator half snapped during a high speed pass.  The stab was actually held in place by the covering and the fin/rudder (stab half was still attached but pointing up).  It landed without incident and without much trouble.

Don't say half a minute.
Say 50% slower!

Oh but there pretty....
Yea 400W/lb should about do it.. But wouldn't a nice round 500 be better?
