RyersonUAV Test Flight
« on: August 06, 2020, 09:33:40 pm »
Check out our latest test flight! Fixed wing vertical take off and landing aircraft completing flight fully autonomously, pilot only hit the start button. Mission accomplished. ;D ;D

The file is too large to attach, click the google drive link below to see the video of the flight.

Hi Guys.  Here are some photos from Ryerson's very successful UAV test at TEMAC today.

Congrats to the Ryerson UAV team: Alexandre Coutu, Kyle Woodman, Robel Efrem and Pyotyr Young.

It was a real treat for all of us to witness this great event.

Looking forward to aerial deliveries of "emergency" chili from Tim's (Woodbine and Stouffville Rd) to TEMAC field.

Cheers!

Andy Hoffer

Excellent stuff. Do the quad's rotors rotate into prop orientation for forward flight?

Hi @bfeist ,

The quad rotors do not rotate into prop orientation.  Forward motion is powered by the single top-mounted prop.  You can see this in photos 5213 and 5223; the rotors are in the same position (stopped) in both frames.  The transition was very smooth.  If you play the video (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1YKYKROnFFx37Fao0otjPjcaZjZSnKqC5/view?usp=sharing) at one-quarter speed it approximates the real time speed as we saw it.

It was really great to see it live.  The Ryerson guys were absolutely over the moon after their UAV landed, the flight having been totally controlled by the pre-programmed routine from their laptop/telemetry setup.  The ascent and descent were silky smooth.

AMAZING WORK!!!!

I really enjoyed watching the flight.  It was absolutely rock-steady in all aspects of flight.  Guaranteed no-one at TEMAC could fly this plane, any plane,  as accurately as the totally autonomous flight I saw.  Well done.
Thanks for not giving up hope after the accident a few months ago.  It made yesterday's victory soooooo much sweeter.

Seen the video and the pics wow what an amazing job they have done, congrats to all.
All looked just perfect with a great landing to finish a great flight.

And thanks to Frank for pointing me to this great achievement.

BTW

The previous post by Ton van Munsteren is from Holland.  Ton is a model plane designer and has many of his models published in the British RCM&E magazine.  In our club we have built two of his designs, the Red Eagle power glider and the Chica.  Last time I was in Holland we met at his flying field in southern Holland.  He let me fly his Chica which had just been published in the magazine.  Yes it did come down in one piece at the end of the flight.

Ton and I plan to meet next summer if this Covid thing ever passes.

In the photo, I am holding the RedEagle and Ton is holding the Chica.

Yes Frank was great meeting you back then and do some flying together , both models still fly almost every weekend.

It already to long ago, time is going really fast and looking forward to next year.

To all stay safe and build and fly as much as you can, because its a great hobby.

Groetjes, Ton

Hey @Frank v B ,

Could you post a higher res version of the photo of you and Ton (so we can see how really good you look in Dutch!)

Especially since the photo appears to have been taken with fill flash!!  :D

This is better @Frank v B.  But you know, you're allowed up to 1000 kB per image.  323 and 229 kB are OK, but you would look SOOO much better if we could enlarge this to full screen.

Also could you provide a bit longer movie clip so we can hear what the girlfriend says in response?!  (Also it's a bit scary how many of these movie excerpts you have at the ready inside your head.  Do you just make up a line and then search it on some movie data base to get Hollywood video support to articulate your thoughts?)

Finally, I thought you were in Holland when these photos were taken.  I would have expected a more clipped wing prop design.  Whatever happened to authenticity??!  :D

Hi @bfeist ,

Yes, we often have to make sacrifices for a higher purpose. Sort of like the NASA budgets for the Apollo moon landings, and the space shuttle program!  :D

Thank goodness they found you to help them get their act together.
