Title: Making a nose cone for a not so nice airplane?
Post by: Gregor77 on October 14, 2017, 09:15:30 AM
With the London swap meet tomorrow. Brings me to a question about making a nose cone for a "runner airplane". I picked up a stand off scale Cessna 175 last year for $5 at the show. It's an old old heavy plane with an 80" ws. The nose was cut and recut and very brittle with age. Due to the fact, it's a nice runner. But not a super nice plane. What is the easiest was to make a nose cone for this?  I don't want to spend weeks carving as it will most likely get wrecked on a nose over?

This might be my build class project!

Greg,

Bring it to the class and I will give my two cents worth.... and give change. :D
I still prefer the carved foam then glass it or the build-up balsa method.  I believe it is squarish and relatively easy to copy.  Remember the 50:50 rule.  If you can't see it at 50 mph at 50 feet, accuracy doesn't matter. ;D

Bought a fibreglass cowl at the London Swap meet for $1.00.

More than passes the 50/50 rule.

Your total investment in this airplane is now $6.00.  Hope Sophia approved!
