Didn't plan a time yet, depends on the weather - need to hand launch my planes so I hope it will not be too cold.

Just checked the weather for Stoufville. -7 with a 20k wind (-13 windchill), if you thought last weekend was cold, tomorrow will be much colder.

Watch out for groundhogs if you fly today! If we can figure out where ROGO Roger lives, maybe we could do a TEMAC  version of Wiarton Willie!

Hi Guys:

It was fantastic at TEMAC on Saturday afternoon!  Brisk for sure (-6C, wind chill -12C), but the winds were quite manageable, 13-15 kmh from the SW.  I was there from 2-4 pm.  Snowpants were great for pre-warming my flight batteries per Ed's recommendations!!

Yikes! Andy if you had your batteries in your snowpants, I hope you didn't get your wires crossed! :o

Oh yes, I was really careful to keep my wires uncrossed.  I learned that from Simon's sagely commentary about FireWire at the January workshop! :)

I did a couple of flights with the glider and Jeff flew his pylon racer and rifle - started nice but when then the wind picked up a bit and together with the clouds it was freezing....

Just in from the field. Good times. Cold but tolerable if you dressed for it.

Good times today for sure!  Beautiful winter flying:  -6C, wind chill only -9C to -11C; winds SW at 7-11 kmh.  Love my Farmer John style 1970's snowpants!!

Field is frozen solid so there's no mud.  Just have to wait for some more snow so I can put the skis back on.

Simon and myself attended TEMAC today. I shoveled the entrance of the driveway and the road in did not look too bad. (Yes I'm a little insane this is common knowledge)  having lots of off roading experience I knew it would be better if I got stuck backing down the driveway.  I backed down but was sliding off to the west side of the drive.  Getting a little stuck we made the decision that it just wasn't going to work. So with a firm push from Simon and a little run I drove out of the driveway.    As for parking on the shoulder I did not see any no parking or stopping signs. This is a regional road not a highway

We went and flew several flights at my Area51 flying site. Great sun and good times

It was amazing, but 2 hours outside was enough.  The cold did creep in!

I managed to catch this photo of Ed and his crazy fast "glider" - amazed I got them both in shot, with an iPhone, on a sunny day!

Thanks Ed!

I must have just missed you guys.  I was there from 1:30 to about 3:30.  I made the same decision after gently testing the snow on the driveway and parked my mini-van at the top of the driveway, although Thomas Kwak stopped by to visit at around 3:00, and he was able to drive right in with his 4x4 SUV with no problem.  It was a gorgeous winter day, with nice dry snow for skis!

Thanks for shovelling Ed.

I squeezed in two flights while Andy had several solid flights with his Sportster. Best of all the driveway is finally accessible!

Except for a small heap of snow (which is almost invisible under an overcast sky!) on the runway side of the second pilot station, I'd say the field is relatively smooth.  There are footprints, but skis or a fuselage can easily traverse the runway.

Driveway was easily navigable for both Jeff's car and my minivan.  Last week's rain has compacted the snow.  A bit icy in spots, but OK if you take it slowly.

John and I finish the cub last night at 5.  It was a fun build and ready for a flight today. This should have gone under craziest maidens. The second it lifted a white plane on a dark sky it disappeared. Lol. Plus it was the three channel converted to 4. So it did not react normal at all.  Ended up just flying it with rudder and landed what I could see.  Lol.  We will be there.

Wow!  Another great winter flying day (if a bit blustery at times, snowy and overcast), and a great turnout (Ed, Greg & Mike H, Fabiano, Greg C, Fabiano, Simon and myself).  The driveway is open and passable, making access decent for winter flying, and the fresh snow on the field has made the runway ideal for skis!

Of particular note, Fabiano flew a stealth (white) F-16, and Greg H flew a stealth glider, both of which did amazing disappearing acts against the white sky.  These guys are truly gutsy and an inspiration to us all!!    And our good president distributed some of the newly arrived Nooner kits to those in attendance.  Thanks so much for coordinating this Simon, and to Ed for his excellent build thread.

Cheers!

Wow, can't believe all you guys were out. Me and Ronny showed up late (Thomas popped by to say hello as well), but stayed until 6! . It was still light out, in fact my last flight was at 5:45. By around 5pm the weather really cleared up with very light winds and even some blue sky peeking through.

We may come out tomorrow in the afternoon as well, as it seems tomorrow might be the only nice day for awhile  :)

Well what a day!!

Winds were a very rare dead calm all afternoon making take-offs and landings possible in any direction. Thomas demonstrated impressive flying skill with his T28 and Supercub, and brought out an 8ft makeshift runway that worked a treat.  I managed 2 ROG snow take-offs with the panther, but it needed 150ft to rotate with the big 6S 4000mah pack  :o

Sure could have used Greg's bon fire at the field today!  It was very brisk.  Wind chill was -10C with NW winds at 24 kmh!!

The snow is nice and should stay that way till things warm  up later this week.  It's crusty now so I'd bet you could even use wheels.  I used skis on the front, and the tail wheel did not sink into the snow at all.  Unfortunately the driveway has been totally blocked by a wall of snow pushed in by the snow plow, so you have to park on the shoulder of Stouffville road.  Good news is the shoulder has been well plowed so there's plenty of room to park safely off to the side, and it's an easy walk in to the field because the snow was saturated before it froze and you only sink in about 1/2 to 1 inch walking down the driveway.

I stopped by for a couple flights late this afternoon. Lots of sun and blue sky was a very welcome change, even managed to get the rifle airborne and log my first proper flight with it (man that thing totally disappears at some angles!) :)

PS The driveway is now clear and open, but only about halfway --  which makes the trek to the field a lot shorter. Big thanks to who ever cleared the snow as it is still quite deep.

I drove by Temac last night on the way home.  The drive was is a bit slushy and there is a good layer of compressed snow. Be careful. I had to take two runs out of the parking lot to get out. Jeff and Ronnie were a bit water logged. Lol. There is tons of snow in the field at least waste height in some area's.

Not saying that. I am saying bring water proof boots. The field will be ok as there is lots of snow between us and the ground.  Ronnie's feet were soaked after a day of flying.

What a perfect day for flying!

I counted the maximum number of planes in the air at the same time a number of times. Good flying, spectacular failures, and all the things that make this hobby so much fun! The smoke trail from Ronny (I need more power!)'s F-16 was quite the sight as well.

Can't wait to do it again!

Ed,

There is a very fine line between dedication and desperation when you write about  "flying", "high winds", "solid ice" in the same sentence.  I don't do it because I don't want to give my wife a reason to call me an idiot.  I save all my flying for better weather when my wife calling me an "idiot" sounds more complimentary. 8)

One day closer to spring!

Quality versus quantity.  You probably had more minutes under control in 6 flights than I had in my 1000 flights.  Remember my only mission in this pylon project is to beat Simon and achieve second last place in the standings.  Humble beginnings. ;D

Or you just plan to let Sarah fly it FPV via satellite link.
* If you are planing on bringing her over and fly it for you I think you will be disqualified due to unfair advantage.

Simon,

I hate to be precise, knowing we are a flying club and not a math club, but a week has 168 hours.  Are you a part-time advertising copy writer?  Sounds like the marketing plans we used to write when I was in corporate life.

May your Nooner stay at my 6 O'clock and Sarah Palin be your co-pile-it.

I was there. The drive up to the barrier is OK, but there are parts of it where the gravel is under water. I didn't go to the end of the drive.

The field is soft and there is a river across the north end of the runway.

Because the ground is soft the areas around the tables is vulnerable.  I tried to limit my time there and varied sides.

I stopped by today and tried to avoid the water and mud the best I could.  I was there to pick up my new plane from Ed... Saweet!   ;D

And Ed let me take a few laps with his Nooner.  Flies very nicely, although I'm used to more gentle aileron throws.  It made me anxious to get building my Nooner.

Flew at ROGO this morning and Saturday morning. Field surface was still frozen on Sat. a.m. but not today.
Sat, Ken Ross was there to maiden his Super Decathlon. I flew my Seawind yesterday, and today a Polaris...both seaplanes(okay, so technically they're flying boats) and both handled the bumpy, mushy field better than Greg's Tim Horton's cup!

I was fortunate in that I saw Bob Hoover do this routine live in person in California years ago ( about 1971). When he came by on the deck( about 3 or 4 feet altitude) with the engines feathered all you could hear was the "woosh" of the air  and then he pulled up did the loop then a roll and then the landing on one wheel then the other.
He rolled down the runway to the middle of the crowd and turned the plane to face us, opened the door , got out and bowed---all with dead engines! I'll always remember that flight.
Earlier he flew the Rockwell sponsored P-51 Mustang and I didn't realize that the flying field had a dip in it until he disappeared below the level of the ground and all you could see was his vertical tail scooting along.
Hoover was wingman to Chuck Yeager during WW2 and they stayed friends long after.

Incredible talent

Well, it looked to be a good turn out yesterday late in the afternoon.   Jeff, Ivan, Pat, Andy, Thomas, Francis and more were there.  I had a chance to see some planes zip around.  I can back later and Maidened the Roy Brown Camel.   It flew well except for needing more right rudder.  After a 5-6 min flight I used up 1600 mah out of a 4,000 pack battery.  So I should be good for about 10 mins with a normal flight.  I did have some concerns with C/G with some other models of this type, but it seemed fine.  So time to give the other planes a bit of a balast diet. :-\

Field is not bad, parking is still the gravel.   But lots of people looks to have driven around the gravel and there are some dangerous sized tire marks to watch out for.   It could suck you in!  Please make sure not to drive past the posted barrier.  It is very soft there and you will damage the parking area.

I was thinking about this. After the flight it looked like it had both right rudder and right aileron, but was still looking like it wanted to pull left?
Perhaps it needs more right and down thrust?
Seeing what happened with the power off would help tell, but it didn't look like you wanted to test that part of the flight envelope just yet. ;)

Nice model, should be a lot of fun once you have it sorted out.

Ah, I see your plan.

You're being mean and nasty so that if you're found out you get told to "get out" and effectively are forced to spend the day at TEMAC.

There's one flaw on your plan......

Despite the windier than forecast conditions, there were quite a few members at the club. None of which were "active"  ;)

Highlights included some nooner lap practice, on one occasion we had 5 planes racing at the same time. I think the Nooner racing  is going to be a lot of fun, the chosen model is a very good flyer, and it is very stable going around the course.

After stressing about it for a while, I finally maidened my Sundowner 36 Ef-1 racer. It went really well. And I'm really happy with the model.

All in all, a great way to start a long weekend.

Yes, it is.

The Pogo was excellent in the air but a nightmare on the ground.

The Sundowner tracked much nicer on the ground. And the ailerons had more authority in the air. The Pogo rolled very slowly, I setup the SD as per the manual, but I think I'm going to reduce my rates a bit or increase my expo, as it rolled much quicker.

Hard to tell which one was faster though. My guess is that the Pogo went a few mph faster in the air.

Well, 2 more successful maidens for me this weekend - or more accurately re-maidens.

I flew the HK Lancaster for the first time. It crashed on take-off last time I tried, so I got my Handlaunching-Assistant to "give it a firm toss!"

And I flew Michael's old Super Chipmunk for the first time.  Obvisouly Michael had flown it before, but it was new to me.  Amazing plane, I loved it.

It was a great weekend!  I missed Sat - Sunday, but had a good full day of flying my H9 Camel "Roy Brown" and the Great planes 40 size 80" cub. This was a maiden for that plane and it was perfect.  A bit over powered and the esc was getting a bit warm. I am going to reduce the prop to a 13X8E.  But none the less it flew very well.  The wind really picked up and unfortunately it flipped the plane and I broke the tip of the rudder.  >:(

I know this thread's about tomorrow, but I maidened my F-22 Raptor 70mm EDF tonight.  Flew amazing, with CS 10 blade EDF and 2900kV motor, but sucked the 2200mAh batteries dry in 3 mins!  And they were hot!

But it looks nice and flew well!

Crashed my Tornado again - twice. It's a bu*&er!  I think I had a stall, in the turn with the wind behind me.  Only slight damage and a ripped servo arm and control horn.  And I think the fan has dropped out of position.  Do I fix it though? It's always been ready to bite me, when flying.

Today's weather numbers from Vegas look possible. Just bring out something that fits in the car assembled!  I might head down for a bit later but plan to stay on the gravel portion of the driveway.
I'm not saying I'm on the executive or anything just might be a good idea with all the rain.(IE: please don't take this the wrong way)

Hey Ed you can make all the common sense statements you want.
That's a good idea. Our parking area is still in poor shape.

Right now they are forecasting 25km winds with 44km gusts and a 70% chance of 1-3mm of rain.
Remember if you end up in the field you will be wearing 10lb. clumps of clay on each foot in seconds after all this rain.
You'll end up like Frank with his shoes stuck so bad he had to run back in his stockings carrying his shoes. Better be fit.

Jack.

What happened to everyone last night?  Training too hard on most of you Wednesday night?  Bill, Andy and myself arrived to an empty field with no people and especially NO wind.  Limited bugs and all.

I originally ran home from work, sent a bunch of emails off and everyone seemed to be busy.  So I loaded up my M1C from Balsa usa.  This is now my second one in green and cream.   I spent a few nights doing the conversion which was easy.  The only issue that I had was the ESC should have been mounted under the cowl for cooling.

Bill flew his Bee Gee R3 and Andy his sportster.  My first flight was a bit hard as the plane has a bad adverse yah effect similar to a DR-1.  Once you get your mind into DR-1 mod, it flew better.  It needs rudder on all the turns.  Landing was fun as the fixed landing gear bounces a bit.

I will make the required changes and try it again, looked great in the sky.  I am hoping to get out there tonight, but with the light rain right now, it looks like a building night!

Great time today at TEMAC!

Yes it was hot and humid, but winds were very low, and there was lots of flying.

I saw about a dozen people, with all kinds of models.

Gordon had an amazingly terrific flight with his WW1 monoplane; Jack flew his jet-glider superbly, Ed and Ronnie flew aerobatic models, Burt flew his Mentor, I flew my 1/4 scale Cherokee and my 20 ounce 1/6 scale Piper Cub, Greg and Glenn flew warbirds, there was some casual Nooner racing, Jeff flew his jet, and so on and so on.  A terrific summer Sunday at TEMAC!

Ok, I am coming out.. trying out the NEW H9 P40B.. I am still worried about the 5,5 V SBEC in the stock ESC.  But the plane is sporting only 4 servos that are not HV.  E-Flight retracts should be fine.  I might not put the wheels up until one or two flights.  :-*   Looks great outside, I just checked the weather channel and they said 2K winds.  Sky is nice and clear from my desk.

Great night. Lots of people out. Got the maiden out of the way. H9 needs a kick in the butt for cancelling this plane. Flew great. So easy to fly. Looked amazing in the air. Everything worked out. Just need some cooling for the esc. Got a bit warm.

Yeah, I was looking at it pretty seriously, and then it was gone. I even missed the $99 fire sale. I'm pretty sure it didn't sell because:

1. It wasn't a P51
2. It didn't have the AVG Flying Tigers scheme.
3. It wasn't a P51

Talking about P51's.. I have some parts to put the NEW P51 from H9 together, their new 40 size.  I like the lines.. Should be spot on.   ;D

Is anyone thinking of going today.  I had a bad Monthend at the office and got home rather late.  Thinking all the way home of open skies!   Looks to be about 16K winds right now, but it could be OK later on.   After flying the P40, I might grab the spitfire or something for tonight.  It would be nice to see a few guys out.

I was just out cycling. The wind is way more than 17kph downtown. More like 25 - 35kph. I'll take a pass today. I'll stay home and keep working on my RC workshop todo list.

This weather sucks. Although I've never had greener grass this late into the summer ever..

Yeah,  but then wind mapper is forecasting 15mph which isn't great,  but somewhat better.

Not sure what to think.  This isn't summer,  but more like the longest autumn ever.

I just went out to soothe that flying itch... With a maiden of my enticement. I figured I would get it because even if I didn't like it I can just rip out the electronics and build the Yak 55 Ed posted the plans to (thanks Ed! Already bought the foam for it).

This plane does not like wind.. At all. No damage thankfully, my dad made a nice catch once I brought it close.

"A lot" = more than I have.  :)

I have more than a dozen flyable foamies right now.
Arrow V6, two Click!, Animal, Osiris, Quasar,Star Flyer,Vrolet,Yak55M, Saturn (my design), two of my Opus F3P models, plus a small Opus for UMX gear.
Probably a couple more around that I have not thought of. I have quite a few kits around as well, both commercial and ones I have cut out.
(Including a Yak55 in EPP that I cut out but never put together)

Just want to say a huge thank you to all my friends at TEMAC for making today such an awesome day.

I really enjoyed flying with everyone and had some great fun hanging out and chatting too.

Thank you all.

Special thanks to Frank vB for making the effort to come even though he missed the racing. Great to see you Frank.

Also hats off the Ben for driving home to get his race batteries. That's commitment - and it was rewarded.

And more special thanks to Jack and Robert for teaming up and organizing a triple-action day.  Great racing again Jack - you created a fabulous series. And big thanks to Robert for selflessly collecting float planes in your dingy-contraption (hope that's spelled correctly!!!!) and not getting to fly your planes as much as you want. Without your boat and enthusiasm we wouldn't be float flying.

P.s. sorry for hitting your boat Robert!

Cheers,
Simon

I missed this incident but I can assure you Simon no one is to blame here.  The massive size difference between the two planes would have made it quite difficult to predict they would hit.  Plus neither of the planes is a total loss and that easily could have been the case.  The fact that your both taking the credit for this shows your stand up guys and is commendable.

Today was an air traffic controllers nightmare!

I finally made it out for a Wednesday evening of flying and I was all alone.  That's O.K., as I was thee for a new age approach to flying with only one plane...my 17 year old (recently recovered, so like new), 2 metre, polyhedral, rudder and elevator, powered glider (very much like the one that was auctioned off at the TEMAC Fun Fly but with a modest 250w/lb).

The wind calmed right down (to my surprise) and I flew, non-stop, for about an hour and a half (two flights) until it was almost completely dark.  It was the type of flying where I could lounge in a chair, eat my Cheesies and drink a Coke while occasionally redirecting the path of the plane.  Not the most exciting type of flying, but certainly a nice way to spend a late summer's evening at the field, and a type of flying that is very pure in it's simple, quiet, basic aerodynamic approach to keeping a model aircraft in the air.  Very Zen   :)

Richard arrived at the beginning of my second flight and kept me company until it was getting very hard to see the plane and I had to land.

Good times   ;D

Robert

Did you hear about the Zen hotdog vendor at Bloor and Yonge?

His cart said "hotdogs; $3. each"

So I ordered a hotdog, with mustard.

He gave me the hotdog, and I gave him a 5 dollar bill.

I waited and waited and he gave nothing back.

I finally said, "What about the change?"

"Change comes from within." he replied.

Well, it was cold, and grey and windy, but I had a blast!  Just got back from 90 mins at the field - alone!

I re-trimmed my repaired Nooner (thanks Frank ;)), so now I have 2 race-ready planes.  And I had some fast laps with my Reverb, and really started to get used to how it feels.  And just to use up the batteries, I tested the repairs on my F-22 after the dodgy launch at the weekend.  So all-in-all, a very successful evening.

It was cold though........

Glenn was perfecting the 109 and 110.
Jeff was having a hoot with his Shoestring.
Philip was flying his assorted park flyer planes.

Was your Morphine on a CC18 ESC? Spoilerons helps a tad with the Sunracer, you might want to give it a try.

Good day, the wind really calmed down near the end. The sad part, my habu went into the beans because it wouldn't take off and the nose wheel as well as the servo broke :( I even cut the throttle but It kept rolling.. which has never happened before

Some pretty good flying, although all I had with me today was the Leader, I flew Imran's Funtana and Yak 54 on buddy box. Lots of fun. It was a bit windy, but those planes handled it no problem.

Not sure if you heard the news today, Robert, but the Provincial Government has declared Wed & Thurs paid holidays and the weather forecast is 24-26 degrees C with 5km/h winds from the South.  We've all decided to have a 2 day party at TEMAC, and have a band playing with Hero Burger doing the catering.  Oh, and Dave & Ron are giving everyone $100 gift cards!

Sorry you can't be here!  ;D

Great winter flying at TEMAC today (3:00 - 4:15 pm).  Snow depth was 5.5 to 6.5 inches, and perfect texture for skis.  Winds were very light.  Temp -6C, wind chill -10C.  A few light flurries later in the afternoon.  Driveway and parking area were navigable in my minivan.  I took full advantage of the nice tracks left by someone who had been there earlier in the day.  Greatest difficulty was getting through the windrow left by the highway plow at the top of the driveway.

Thomas Kwak graciously blazed a nice trail into the parking area with his Toyota 4Runner yesterday and today.  The driveway is navigable with good snow tires and high ground clearance.  The ice under the snow is treacherous - lots of potential for sprained ankles so walk slowly and carefully in the pits.  Current ice cover on the assembly tables is about 2 cm, but it works fine if you brush off the snow.  Thomas and I had a great time this afternoon!  (http://temac.ca/smf/index.php/topic,4430.msg26067.html#msg26067 (http://temac.ca/smf/index.php/topic,4430.msg26067.html#msg26067))

Okay.  You've had more than enough time to clean the house and buy a year's supply of duvet covers.  It's time for snow pants, skis, (or floats if you must) and a trip to ROGO field.  Thomas Kwak has done a terrific job of keeping the driveway open by setting down tracks with his SUV every day.  You NEED to get there.

I could not make it to TEMAC today nor have I renewed my membership yet.  I will attend to that shortly...  after I return from Cuba...   I did manage to come as near as I dare to Andy's level of sanity today by maidening an all white plane in a snow storm.  All went well and I plan on bringing it to the pilots meeting hopefully with some form of markings on it.

I did that once!  And I mean once.  All white plane (Ace Tiger Kitten, Astroflight cobalt geared 615 brushed motor on 10 sub-C NiCads) on skis, white overcast day, snow covered ground (nice white reflection off bottom of white plane!!) at the old 14th Avenue field.  A real stealth handful.  Got it into a series of tight loops; I couldn't control it.  Even Andre Wedseltoft couldn't save me, despite his valiant 3 seconds of trying when I desperately handed my transmitter to him after he asked if I needed help.  I have mementos of the wreckage in my airframe collection.  ;D  Thanks to the nice snow cover and tall grass, the motor, servos, and battery all survived the crash.  The airframe was not so fortunate.  One of those events that stays with you forever, burned into long-term memory with crystal clarity!

Hi Greg:

Thomas and I were out on Sunday (Jan 12).  I tried to shovel away some of the windrow left by the highway plow at the entrance.  The driveway was barely passable (soft ice crust, underlain by slush and water), but Thomas had opened the path with his SUV.  I was able to make it in with my Sienna van with good snow tires, but there were a few tense moments.  Traction was very iffy.  I imagine much of the snow has melted during the week, and expect the ground will be soft.  Walking in might be the best option, but let us know what you find if you go to the field.

Flying was great by the way.  Very slick icy crust on the field.

Lucky guys.. .Do you think that large wheels would be OK on the crust to take off / Floats?  Carmen and I are getting a RAV Limited AWD, I am hoping that would be OK to take.  The other cars seem a bit low.  I have that Eflite cub that I am dying to try again. That was the one from last year.  I am worried that the floats being fiber glass might take a beating on the ice.

I sold some of the planes and the skii's left with one of them.  They would have worked very well on the Unionville beaver.  As a matter of fact I sold that one too... ooops.

But don't worry, there are still lots of planes left... ;o)

You sold the Unionville Beaver??!!!!!  I will rend my clothing in mourning.

I would not try wheels unless you can spot an untrodden area and keep to it.  Wheels will find footprint potholes and you risk tearing out the landing gear and/or flipping the plane and incurring damage.  Floats should be OK.  I've been OK with DuBro park flyer skis (which are about 2" x 6") on my Mini Funtana, and DuBro aluminum skis (about 2" x 12") on my Sportster (http://temac.ca/smf/index.php/topic,4429.msg25988.html#msg25988 (http://temac.ca/smf/index.php/topic,4429.msg25988.html#msg25988))

5 cm on Sunday (20 kmh winds; -8C)  - Perfect winter weather!!  And all the "potholes in the field will be filled in!

Got out and had a couple flights just now.  Winds were low but still strong enough to make it quite cold.  Flying with my thin flying gloves I managed two six minute flights before I did the short walk home.  The little plane is a blast to fly and I cant wait to get some nice weather to enjoy.  Robert is always telling me if I flew off of water I would be just a little cooler so I figured I would post a photo of my plane sitting on some.  He failed to point out the temperature of the water!

Well, since this is a family show I am not going to touch your cucumber!  But I will tell you that I too was out today, at TEMAC, from 1:30 to 3:00, including the walk in from the highway (unfortunately no trailblazing by Thomas Kwak) and it was fantastic flying.  Moderate winds straight from the south, beautiful snow cover (all holes filled in),and only light snow at the time.  You whitewater float flyers would have been in heaven.  The toughest part was the white sky, which moved in around noon.  Lots of layers is all you need!  No bugs!  No sunblock!  YES!!!

"Ding, dong! Ding, dong! Ding, dong!"  (Andy chiming in here!)

As it stands now I'm aiming for Sunday.  Saturday forecast is calling for 10-15 cm of snow at Buttonville, so driving will not be fun, and parking onthe shoulder of Stouffville Road carries a risk of getting ploughed in when the highway ploughs go by.  Sunday forecast is gorgeous:  high -4C, wind chill -10C,  wind W at 20 kmh, variable cloud (much better than a white overcast sky).  Hopefully the ploughs will clear the shoulder as they have been so we have a good place to park.  And the fresh snow should make for fantastic white water flying!! And maybe Rob could rig up his camper top with a big fan as a "swamp buggy" recovery boat to rescue float flyers from the back 40!  :D.

Yeah!  I made it out today, to do my first winter flying of the off-season!  Madness.

Hoping to maiden the Vixen, Slipstream and Hadron tomorrow.  Anyone coming to help?  :)

Oh, I also met Ed's imaginary friend "Dave"!  ;D

It would be a pleasure.  I hope to be there after lunch.

I expect we will have to walk in from the highway.  Expected snow accumulation is 15 cm, plus the stuff we got last week, so driving in is not a likely option.  We'll see what the brave SUV drivers, if any, are able to do!

Bring a snowbrush to clear off your assembly table! :D

That's right!!  What a perfect winter opportunity for all those jets with tiny scale wheels.  And no trouble finding the centreline.   I hope to see lots of jets out on Sunday (-4C, wind chill -10C, winds W15 kmh).

Taxiing EDF's should provide an interesting challenge until you get up some speed.

I stopped by the field late this afternoon (Saturday) to see if it offered wide open grass like the rest of Toronto and area, but only found about a foot of crusty, lumpy snow, and an unusable driveway.  I'll hold off of flying for a bit longer.  My planes need work anyway  :)

The surface ice on the field has melted leaving a nice corn snow surface. I managed to back 1/3 the way down the driveway even but I would advise to do thus at your own risk.
Had several flights and made some videos that I might post later. The sun was beautiful and the winds not that bad as they were right down the runway.

I suspect with today's temperature I was the last one to drive on our frozen and snow covered driveway. I would recommend that the board make an assessment of its condition. Also the field WILL be flooded and to prevent damage in these next couple weeks I would advise the executive take a look.

Other than that I'm not saying anything lol

General rainfall amounts of between 15 and 25 millimetres are expected. Many regions will get freezing rain.

I agree with the above.  I too am anxious to get out there and fly but making a mess of the driveway/parking area will push all the new gravel down.  Lets not have the previous steps we have made wasted.

I would think this could go without saying, but that has been proven wrong in the past  ;D

I'm happy to park on the road, walk in while avoiding the really soft spots, and treading carefully in the pits and especially on the field.

Looking at the photos that Greg posted, it looks like the snow in the pits is taking longer to melt than the landing area.  Probably 'cause Snoballs has been packing it down all winter!   :P

What an awesome day at the field. T-shirt weather! And thanks to everyone for parking considerately.

It was great to catch up with a few people that I hadn't seen since last year. And also to see some new models. And I think we saw out first ever towed glider launch (which I captured on video - post later.)

My repaired, re-motored Nooner flew awesome and seemed very quick, but I managed to brain-fart with my hadron and nose in from inverted.

Now I remember what it's like to hang-out and chill at the field. It's just so fab!

It was great to be there, but it was still quite wet!

Nevertheless, I maidened two models successfully.

I did have to repair an elevator, adjust trim, and also program a speed control to brake (stop spinning the motor so a folding prop will fold), but that's all done now.

The outer area is very wet and muddy, almost like quicksand.

Sun and smiles-- it was great to see so many at the field again!
Wet, but much better than I was expecting.  I stuck with the UMX Icon 5 myself thinking the field might have been a lot softer.

Wonderful to see all of the others flying new and familiar aircraft, including Greg's K8.  Not to steal Simon's thunder, but I promised to share video of the K8's flight as well.  (At least there should be 2 angles of the same flight and perhaps others.)  Nice job, Greg!

The road in was dry in the early afternoon, but gradually became part of the stream by late afternoon.

Gorgeous night at TEMAC this evening!  Very little wind and beautiful sunset!  Lots of geese in the circuit.

You can back in about one third of the way down the driveway (up to the orange pylon).  Parts are flooded and soft beyond that. Very little snow left in the pits.  Field is clear.  Rubber boots are a must.

Cheers.

Stop teasing us!  >:(

Is the roadway OK to park on?  How is the gap between the road way and the field... Last year there was a fair amount of water there.  I know that we added the gravel, did that help?   I assume that the field is still very soft on the sides.  I personally will wait and play in the park.  Actually the weather is perfect today!  Cough Cough.. time to go home!   ;D

I was out again on Wednesday evening.  Another beautiful night with clear skies and light wind.  I was able to back my van down the driveway up to the barricade at the entrance to the parking lot.  Parking lot and shoulders of the driveway are still very soft.  There is much less water on the low spots of the driveway than the day before.  Drainage seems to be working reasonably well.  Pits and field are still very wet, but not flooded. Boots are a very good idea.  Today was another good drying day so it should be nice on Saturday.

I stopped by TEMAC this afternoon.

The roadway in looks dry but be careful.
The stream to the west has subsided and the gravel looks dry.
There are 2 washouts from the farming field south of the barrier, but quite minor.

The major problem is that the ground is saturated in the parking area, pit area, and between there and the pilot stations.  (Stand in the apparently dry parking area and wiggle your feet back-and-forth and you will see the water rise.)

My recommendation is to back down the driveway to the checker barrier if you must, or enjoy the casual walk-in from the road.  (Personally, I would still park near road.)

SO...................

Some people intuitively understand what Graham meant when he said, "The roadway in looks dry but be careful."

And some might even take the drastic step of actually listening to Hoffer (granted this is a risky proposition) when he says, "...the shoulders of the driveway are still very soft."
But others just seem to need a more tactile demonstration of what we were talking about to really grasp this abstract concept.  So our selfless CFI, who is expert in teaching methods, graciously provided same today at the field.

Mike, you are true leader and your selflessness is an inspiration to us all.

Andy

P.S.  Mike went the extra mile today with a live demo of scale weathering techniques which can be applied to model aircraft.

Well Snoballs, it's very technical. Basically,

1. The vehicle is not equipped with 4wd or awd.

2. Mud is very slippery

That is the same place I helped pull you out of last spring when you got stuck trying to do a 16 point turn!!! :-[

The first sign of spring used to be when the first Toronto snowmobiler goes through the ice on Lake Simcoe.  So now it becomes....when Mike H gets stuck at TEMAC.... as long as spring gets here.

Glad you got out. :)

It was another great spring flying day.  I was there from 11:30 to 3:50.  Ken Ross came by and flew a new Cessna and couple of jets. Later on Greg C came by to show me his "new" 19 lb scale Lancaster.  All in all, pretty quiet, considering the great weather.  Lots of flow through the driveway washouts due to the heavy rain last night, and the ground is really squishy, but the flying was good.

Unfortunately no Mike.  Too bad considering the increased variety of nice super-soft parking spots along the shoulder of the driveway!!  ;D

A strange day weather wise. But mostly pretty good for flying. There were a number of guys out today enjoying the holiday. Managed to fly the Scimitar a couple times today and it flew well. Some tinkering to do to make it really perform, but overall I was happy.

Greg and I went head to head with our EF1 racers and managed to split our two informal races at one win a piece. Rematches are planned. Lots of fun, and the runway made the takeoffs a dream.

Here's hoping for more good weather next weekend.

@ bfeist I only took you out because I didn't see any of the others as a challenge. Who would have thought Simon would make the full ten laps!  I had sabotaged Glenn's plane just before the race so I had that under control.  You were the only one I needed to settle.

Has anyone noticed how very windy it has been this spring? I bought one of those little hobbyzone champs about 2 months ago. Because  I have a soccer field across the road, I love to go out and put in 2 or 3 flights before work. I have been very aware of the wind. There has not been one day in the last 10 weeks were it was dead calm. I have been able to get in flights first thing in the morning, but the little champ is pretty blown around even then. I am anxious to get in some hours on the Apprentice, but not with 28 km crosswinds. Oh well, at least there is a hockey game on tonight!!! Saying all that, I will probably venture up to the field after work, and pray the winds drop!

It's definitely been really windy lately but flying in wind is really fun and challenging, the most i have EVER flown in is 28 gusting 35km/h with my Leader 480, its risky but that's the fun part, especially the harrier landings!  ;)   I consider anything over 25km/h challenging  ;D

Well flying on the 15th was lots of fun!  It was like a mini fun fly!  Lots of great planes flying around.  Ken had an amazing Bronco, Michael with his large moth and larger Cessna?  All the boys were out, we had a flight with some Windrider Hurricanes and a HK Spitfire from Bill.  The pylon racing with the pogo and other planes was crazy cool!  Some real good landings on the run way and some not so good.

I somehow had managed to twist one of the landing gears on the TF 115 Corsair on take off...  It flew great and is so nice to see in the air.   The landing was a bit tricky as the one wheel was sideways.    Well "crunch" as it landed it made a spectacular scene as the battery ejected from the sudden stop and had all the plane guts all over the runway.  It looked way worse than it was.   Collecting all the bits, It ended up about a 1 hr repair and I felt better afterwards, just lacking a cold beer to celebrate.  The cowl only broke two attachment points and the retracts only lost one link.   I ended up finding it in the landing gear bay.  After some quick surgery and re-alignment, it was all back to get there an ready for another flight.  These old TF kits are heavy, but very tuff.

It was a great day!  Looking forward to more in the summer!  What a great club!

I met a lot of new club members that afternoon. Not to mention, lots of different types of planes.

I do hope to be there this evening.  As for "hitting the field", I would prefer to leave that to others who are of greater masochistic persuasion than I am.  I am content just to land on it gently.  However, if others want to "hit it", I am more than happy to provide an appreciative audience and assist in recovery efforts.  ;D

Had a fab day today! Was wonderful to see Greg's big Lancaster - well flown Mr. Cadez!

Not entirely sure what happened between Greg H's Spitfire and my Mosquito, but it ended in carnage. Sorry about the Spit Greg!

Thanks to Glenn (and Jack) for helping fix the handling issues on my Snitch/Vixen. It was very pitch sensitive until I added some tape under the rear of the wing, to adjust the incidence. Looks like it may be a viable race option now!

Flying the Rifle 1M was a blast - it was super stable. But it gets invisible on final, flying directly towards you . Now it's time to prop up!

And thanks to Rob for letting me maiden his PZ Mossie and PZ Spitfire. Really enjoyed that.

Oh, and we had some mini races with Nooners and EF1 planes. Greg H won the first EF1 race, in which Glenn finished 1st and I beat them both!!!!

Michael also flew his big Tiger Moth and Jeff flew his Reverb (with a slight glitch at the end.) Great to catch up with Gordon, Dave M & Ken Ross (I have your lipos) and also see 2 Apprentices, flown by John P and Graham.  Did I miss anyone?

Awesome times! Thanks everyone.

I went up to the field last evening. The winds is calm and perfect to (re)maiden my S.E.5a.  Thank you everyone who assisted and gave me advice. I love this plane. (And the Albatros). The best is when flying low and slow across the runway. It's so scale. I am still learning the use of rudder when making turn.

Here are the videos I recorded earlier.

I should be there by 2 pm. Saturday after my 9:00 job.   I don't have a blue nose P-51 but I can be a flag man.
I flew today.  A little windy but straight down the runway from the north.
Walked the field and found lots of foam bits, prop bits and a beat-up 6 cell approx. 4,000 mah battery with a yellow connector near the telephone pole beside the road.
Could not find Glenn's canopy/pilot at the south end... but tried!

Really happy to have maidened my Freewing "Eurofighter" Typhoon this weekend.

I bought the kit plus version which came with all servos but no ESC or motor. I swapped the stock fan out for a Wemo-tec fan, used an 1800kV motor and a 100A ESC using 6S 4000mAh lipos.

I painted it in RAF colours and got markings from CallieGraphics.

It flew great. The glide is amazing, there is no stall virtually and the speed was pretty scale.

I'm very pleased with it.

After last Club Meeting on 'How not to crash', with some practiced on Flight Simulator for the past weeks, I decide to try it at the field this morning.(well, if I crash, then I can apply what I learnt from the Wednesday build class).

I was all by myself this morning. It was a bit cold and cloudy, otherwise, it was a great flight and I pretty much covered all the stuff Michael mentioned in the meeting (including 'What not suppose to do').    :D

Thank you Michael !!

Sidenote: Those T-pin(s) from last year building class has another purpose now - To secure my Canopy from falling off !

Well, we made up for it today!  What a fantastic flying day:  8-9 degrees C, winds NW at 6-10 knots (11-18 kmh); mostly sunny, with scattered high cloud to make it interesting.  Felix, Ricky, Philip, Greg C, Stephan, Jeff, Ken C and I all enjoyed this wonderful Christmas Day treat from NavCanada.

HUGE thanks to Greg Cadez, master of the high wing loading, for his fantastic support and gentle coaching (I would even say soothing), and videography, as I re-maidened (finally!) my Pitts Special, after a 4-year hiatus, awaiting repairs.  (Much as I love Frank, his "put it in the corner and it will repair itself" technique simply wasn't working, so I had to take matters into my own hands.  ;D)

The stars finally aligned and the plane flew beautifully for all four thrilling flights.  At 6.5 pounds flying weight and a wing loading of almost 25 ounces per square foot, it is, of course, intolerant of inadequate power in the turns and on landing. (Ask me how I know this!)  This is NOT a slow flyer, and you MUST be ahead of it at all times.  Peak power loading is 135 watts per pound (Power 32, 13"x6.5" prop, fully charged 4S 5000) which made for great scale aerobatics.

Wishing you all the best for the rest of Christmas Day, and hope to see you out at the New Year's day "Fun Fly" (10 am, Jan 1).

Sincerely, Snowballs (waiting for the snow) Hoffer

Thanks guys.  It really is a sublime feeling.  ARF's are nice, and give a quick fix for one's flying addiction, but there is really nothing quite as satisfying as seeing a scratch-built project take flight.  It's been a long journey, and I've been blessed with some wonderful generous help and encouragement along the way!

Cheers!

Great going Andy.  I second Mr. Nutz's comments on the satisfaction of re-maidening a re-built airplane.  A huge side benefit of crashing a lot....... and then they ask you to teach the repair class.   :D
On both take-offs it reminded me that bipes are always so pitch sensitive and we forget to dial back the elevator when we switch from regular planes.  I did it wrong every time I flew my Skywriter.

The bigger question:
At 5:19 am, Mr. Nutz writes .  "BTW Greg, what the heck are you doing up in the middle of the night anyway?" Who is calling the kettle back.  The more important question for both is whether the times indicate a late night or an early morning. ;D  For Greg it was probably the early morning burp shift.

Gee!  I can't believe nobody was at the field today except Loi and I.  It was a balmy 6 degrees and virtually no wind for most of the time (2:00-4:00).... OK, so the sky was white, but the rain held off!!.... and yes,it was a bit misty...well, OK, foggy at times, but that was mostly north and south of the field.... I mean, you could see the runway... and you could see your plane if you kept it in reasonably close.... and vertical visibility was good above circuit height... well, yes, the fog did start to close in from both sides around 4:00 pm, but hey, that's a LOT better than had been forecast.  And the runway and grass on the field were snow free!! (All the snow was in the pits).... but skis still worked nicely on both the runway and the grass!!  I imagine floats would have been right at home on the soaking wet grass.

So where was everybody? ::)

Hi Ken:

Yes, I have flown with Desmond Lightbody in the Pitts a few times.  I believe his current rate is $320 per hr, all in, including a Video of your flight.  It's wonderful plane and his rate is quite reasonable considering what you get.  (Compare a C172 + instructor at Buttonville for about $280/hr plus GST.)  Des will go as wild or as mild as you like.  He flies out of Oshawa Airport, and does the aerobatics over the compost heap at Courtice, just northwest of the Darlington Nuclear station.

Let me know if you need contact info.

You might say Oscar and I chilled out at the field today!  It was magnificent winter flying: blue skies, sweet icy air and just enough fluffy snow for skis or floats. 8)

I believe @Oscar got a few photos which I am hoping he will post.

Cheers

With -18c (wind chill), wind was about 7km/h (yes, it's cold).  It's only Andy and me flying at the field.  My phone is running in slow motion (at one time, my phone even froze).  I did manage to get some photos and video.  When I left, Andy is still at the field.   :P

TEMAC - Feb 15 2016:
METAR CYKZ 151900Z 140 (SE) 09KT (16 kmh) 3SM -SN FEW012 OVC015 M05/M07 A2999 RMK SF1SC7 SLP170=

METAR CYKZ 151800Z 150 (SSE) 08KT (14 kmh) 15SM OVC016 M06/M09 A3002 RMK SC8 SLP181=

Enjoyed some great family time with the crows who were standing by as sentries on the runway when I arrived.  We negotiated a deal   they agreed to leave voluntarily and I agreed to not join their flock when airborne - and the field was mine!
Winds at TEMAC were pretty much straight down the runway.    Good stiff winds aloft so the "heli" opportunities were perfect, and the snow is still nice and fluffy.  The only thing I really missed were catcalls from Frank and Mike!  8)

Maiden flight so the middle of the video is crap because I was setting up spoileron/elevator mix.

Check that landing slide though it did make it to the fence lol

Woke up with a record breaking temperature, I just have no excuse to turn down a buddy call for a fly. First time this year. Andy I have to confess that I have yet to pay my due for 2016. We arrived before 11am and Frank Fong was already enjoying the warm weather flying his FT Guinea Pig; a scratch build with a bomb dropper. He flew the PIG couple times and on one flight he drop a home made bomb (a tape and a part) on top of us.  Lucky to us that Frank hasn't link up this FPV gear on this drop otherwise I will not be reporting, in the future watch out guys when you see that Guinea Pig flying on top of you.

Later time Greg show up with his adorable daughter, follow by Rod then Glenn, if I'm correct they are flying their Spitfire the hottest flyer to be at Rogo in 2016.

Before sun set Oscar text me that he is on his way to pick up milk and bread which is only available from the Rogo field.

What a day, no complain.  ;D

What a fantastic afternoon.  The wind is calm.  Weather is +7c.  It was a great show Greg and Rob did on the combat warwing.  Also there was a heli 3D flight demo too (I am sorry, I forgot his name).  I enjoyed it very much.  Later, Philip, Loi and I flew the WACO together.  Just before I left, Glenn arrives at the field too.   :D

Anyone planning on flying tomorrow?

Please be advised that a number of the morning crew are meeting for lunch at the Swiss Chalet in Stouffville, located on Stouffville Road (north side), east of highway 48. Meeting a 12.

After lunch we are going to the TEMAC field to start the flying season for some (continuing to fly for others).  Everyone is welcome!

Lunch is optional.  Likely arriving at the field around 1:30.

Hope to see you there.  I'll bring streamers, if anybody is interested.

I went this morning.  Frank already teaching the students.  Richard already burnt up his batteries and ready to go home.  Karl was on his last pack.  Graham left before I arrived.  What a beautiful morning. It was cross wind this morning but manageable (compare with Sat. this morning is mild).  Then Eric, Rob D, Tuck and Greg C. showed up for a brief moment before the shower starts.

Flew my P-51 and P-40.

After lunch, the sun is back out.  The weather network said the ThunderStorm started at 3pm.  So went back and burnt the remaining packs on my Theory W wing.   No one was at field. The cross wind is getting gusty (but the windsock doesn't move at all).  The Theory W wing have no effect at all, flies like on rail (thanks for the AS3X technology).  A 4S 1300mah runs for 7 1/2 mins.  Excellent wing!

Hi Frank,

I searched and found out the cause why there is no down elevator for the Slave radio. The AUX channel is reversed.  To change, go into the transmitter servo inversion menu ( hold the left and right gimbals in the upper-inside position as shown while powering on the DXe), go to the sixth channel (the AUX channel - use right aileron, press 6 times) and press down (elevator up) on the right stick to invert the channel.

It is the anniversary of the USA release of the Beatles song "She Loves You".

Hi Simon (@sihinch) and bruce (@bweaver),

Actually tomorrow looks like an absolutely fabulous day for giving my winter gear a good workout - sunny, brisk, and fresh snow on the field!  And I just finished tuning up the skis on my Mini Funtana, too.  But as luck would have it I have to take my van into the shop to get the driver's side power window fixed.

But you'll be pleased to know that I did have a great full-scale workout at Oshawa on Monday before the snow, so I'm feeling just fine.  But thanks for your generous concern for my well being!! 8)

BJ, Sounds like fun.  I hope Andy's aircraft retrieval foot prints going and coming across the snow on the field, resulting from his downed aircraft yesterday didn't interfere with your taxiing and take offs.

Both you and Andy are going to make wonderful good 'morning crew' members.  (Ones who respond promptly to the call to come out and fly in the morning even when it is a bit chilly.  Andy - we know now that you do fly in the morning, so don't fight us.  Two mornings in a row now is a good start.)

Just a reminder though, we haven't seen your applications yet?  Once submitted, each of your applications will be promptly processed.  (We are always looking for someone with flying skills, enthusiasm and cheerfulness.   By saying that, it doesn't mean that you have those traits; we're just looking for people with them, or at least one of them, or even just close to having one of them will do.)  ::)

Hmmm...  Where to begin...

I keep hearing about the morning crew, but in my two morning outings since the New Year's Day Snow Fly (where four of the 22 Morning Crew flew), I have only seen three members of said august organization, and only two of those actually flew.  And these were days with perfect flying conditions!  What am I to make of this?  Is the Morning Crew truly manifest?  This all has the look and feel of gyrations of someone's wild imagination.

Please help me to understand.  If necessary I'm sure Frank can offer some sagely thoughts!   8)

Andy, it was a pleasure to have you grace the 'morning crew' lunch table this afternoon.   Also, thank you for sitting at the other end of the table. I am sure that everyone at the end was quite impressed.

Respecting your question,  "Is the Morning Crew truly manifest?"  Your visit with us must have been clearly, obviously, palpably, evident that we do exist in reality and not only in ones mind.  While with us today you even took photos as proof for reinforcing in your mind and your future viewing pleasure of the morning crews existence and appeal.

Respecting your hopes that Frank chirps in some further comments to this discussion - I am sure he will.  'Sagely' thoughts though, unlikely.

Quit making me look these words up!   :P

Hi Guys:

I spoke to the Atmospheric Environment Service at Envt Canada and asked if they would be kind enough to give us something just a little more enticing for the broader Morning Crew cohort, so that they too can enjoy that most sublime of RC experiences, winter flying.  It looks like they pulled out all the stops for us and have given us an absolutely fabulous forecast for Sunday, Jan 14, with barely any wind - positively balmy!  Bruce and I will be there on Sunday morning.  Tentative schedule is coffee at Horton's Hangar at 10:30 a.m. (Woodbine & Stouffville Rd), then out to the field at 11:00 a.m.  We'll advise of any changes.

Hope to see you there!

Andy

With weather like that forecast-ed, why believe you can only fly at TEMAC 3 out of 4 months a year?  How ever just a reminder, wear a windbreaker.... or two under your coat(s).  Gloves are good, a scarf or two as well.

As I am learning from Andy, the secret fly in the winter (here in the northern climate) is going out when there is little to no wind.  Tomorrow's forecast is looking like that.

A few things about the photos:
- yes, I flew HoffAir to Brampton.  The longest taxi way... the 401
- yes, waaayyy too close.
- no it was not photoshopped.  It was pure punishment. ;D
- Poor Tony Hayward in the back seat.  We picked him up at his home in Brampton.... one day after he had his stitches removed from a cancer operation (Colon), we drove to GreatHobbies 'cause Andy had never been there and had lunch at Swiss Chalet per Morning Crew Custom.  Then the three of us went to the Celebration of Life for Georgette Messacar, Fred's wife, who died on Boxing Day.  Fred has been to several TEMAC Pilot's Meetings.

I hope Tony is feeling fine today, he was last seen holding his side and laughing when he escaped from the car and ran to his front door. 8)

A fun Day. Sad purpose.

Morning Crew Alert - Tuesday Jan 16 2018

It just keeps getting better!  Check out the Wx forecast!!  Note that we'll probably have several cm of fresh beautiful snow overnight and early tomorrow morning, so anticipate having to walk in from the highway.  (Bonus exercise at no extra charge!)

Tomorrow's class, after a nice hot calorie-rich lunch of chicken, fries and gravy, will be crabbing in the pattern and cross-wind landings, using crabbing and/or side slip.  All this cross-control is sure to put a smile on our CFI's face!!  8)

And just look at all that sunshine!  It's practically like summer!!

Well....

The sun was A.W.O.L., but the temperature was mild (-6oC) and the winds were light (6 knots) out of the south west, so the flying conditions were quite decent.

Bruce was good enough to come out and supervise (from the confines of his warm automobile, of course) and, in his capacity as CFI, do a photo essay on how to dress properly for winter flying!  I'm usually very shy when it comes to modelling, but for a good cause I went for it.  Bruce coached me on the correct assembly sequence and we now have a pretty good photo tutorial for all of you who have wanted to enjoy some snow flying but weren't sure how to assemble their winter PPE.  So here is the final product, in two parts for your enjoyment.  This should help you conquer your fear of winter flying!!   8)

Part 1:  Bottoms and Boots
Title: Re: Anyone planning on flying tomorrow ?

Part 2 - More Bottoms, and Tops

So there you go!  And after you've fought your way into your snow gear, you'll be nice and toasty and all limbered up (or cramped) for standing at the flight line!!!

Enjoy!

Nice shooting Bruce!!

Well...

It had to happen.... :'(

All this blather (from those who shall remain nameless!!!) of southern climes and sun tans has manifested itself in unseasonably warm conditions all the way up here at TEMAC field, resulting in the remaining snow cover assuming the consistency of a sticky Slushie. Even the most deft take-off runs were no match for the viscosity of the substrate.  Any forward motion resulted in the skis digging in and the attendant creation of very effective ski chocks, which were not conducive to attainment of anything looking like take-off speed.  BJ and I did manage to leave a nice variety of ski trails, divots and boot marks in the snow on the field, and we did enjoy an otherwise balmy spring day.  So we just have to wait for the 6oC and rain on Monday and the 12oC and rain on Tuesday to melt the remaining snow and wash the turds off the runway.  Wheels 'r Us!  8)

Simple @Frank v B -

@Andy Hoffer means that 'his take offs sucked' a little more than usual.  At least that's the way I see it with my limited capacity to understand what he says sometimes.  I'm glad I'm not the only one.   ???

Hi All,

BJ and I had a truly wonderful day at the field today (Sat. Feb 17)!  No smart posteriorum to deal with (look it up @Frank v B and @bweaver !!), just great company and fabulous conditions.  The saturated wet snow from Thursday had glazed over and our skis were pretty much able to bridge our divots from Thursday's slush fest.  Literally zero drag, so with the 20-30 kmh winds from the SW take-off runs and landings were effortless and short.  And winds aloft were really honking, so we both had good workouts!

To add visual interest, there were lots of coyote tracks at the north end of the runway, and one snowmobile track along the road and across the south end of the field.

Access by car is tricky now due to the hard slick ice in the ruts and under the snow.  You definitely need winter tires and a gentle touch on the gas, and all-wheel drive is very nice to have.  With the warm weather and heavy rains expected on Monday and Tuesday I expect the driveway and parking lot will be impassable by car for several weeks, but we will see.  The runway should be fine once the snow melts, but you'll probably want to come in on foot with high, leak-free rubber boots.  You don't want to pull a Mike Hazelton!  And of course, we don't want to wreck the driveway and parking area.

It's been a great winter!  8)

Great Bj.  I can verify from the photos you were there.  Was Andy really there to fly or just take pictures?

@Andy Hoffer - Boy it really got cold fast and snowed since the earlier post with Mike stuck in the driveway... and is that Greg wearing a T-shirt?  Glenn looks too warm as well.

It is 30 Degrees C here for those that care.   :)

All joking aside.  But there is marks going into the parking lot. So one of you did try to fly?  It also appears to be a black line down the run way. Maybe someone tried to shovel the runway? Still a bit chilli for my stuff. I don't want a repeat of loading the car up and have nothing work because the servos don't like the cold. Lol.

Hi Greg,

Yes, both BJ and I were there on Thursday and Saturday.  Thursday was a no-go due to heavy slush, but Saturday was excellent as it had frozen and there was a really nice crust of ice.  I believe BJ had briefly tried to clear a patch on the runway on Thursday, but we decided it was not worth the effort given the weight of the slush.

It will probably get really sloppy again today with the forecast high of 3oC.

Happy building!

Andy
