I have had a WarWing from Weaver Industries sitting in my office for two years. I built it last night and am installing the motor and radio tonight.
No there will not be a photo posted of it because it will be critiqued to no end by Bruce.
Here is a chance for the membership to give me input on the colour/design of the paint job.... using Dollarama paints. Any ideas for highly visible and unique colour combinations are welcome. Camouflage is not an option. If you can't see it I can't fly it! ;D
Frank
That's great Frank 8)
I suggest painting a great big bullseye :o
It will make it easier for
@bweaver to find you.... ;D
And suggest flying caristics from plane to plane :P
BJ,
Neat idea. A Canadian Air Force roundel parading as a bulls-eye.
Bill Q (aka Wingnutz) will be proud of the model.

@Frank v B Well it's about freegan time!
And a target, roundel or bulls-eye painted on it is totally unnecessary, just a pretty ribbon trailing behind it. I can't wait to see it in person... (I know the photo will suck.)
Only 2 years? It has felt like a life time.
Bruce,
Am still laughing at your reply.
re: "(I know the photo will suck.)"
Them's fighting words and will force me to publish a $hittty photo just to ruin your day. :D The poor photo will wake up Andy as well. Oops
Frank
ps: bought a E-Flite Apprentice motor at the Kitchener Swap meet for $5.00 just for this plane and servos for $1.00 a piece. The investment is killing me. :)

Excellent... another WarWing for me to run away from :D
I suggest bullet holes and a flame motif.

You spent way too much! Need I remind you, it's a warwing you are building.
Obviously, using an Apprentice motor means that this plane will likely have some durability and longevity potential built into it.
I just said that to give you hope Frank, because you will need it. :-*
Where is that picture you have promised?
What about the Military version of a "Starsky & Hutch" paint job, Frank?
I like that Simon - and the call letters will be "Z3"
But will Frank be Starsky or Hutch? And that will leave Bruce to be the other 8)
Sounds good!!
There will be two pilots, one with a bullet hole. The pilots will be Harsky and Stutch so there will be no fighting over who is who. There will be a flame coming out of the rear pilot's ass-end. A plane made by committee. Love it.
Oh, Bruce, here is the Warwing photo and a bonus one.
The plane comes in its own container (body bag). The go-fast stuff is under wraps. 8)
The second photo shows the new $1.00 servos in place.* Note: I will not cut the ailerons free until the pushrods are done. It stops-em-from-floppin.
Frank
* the length of the servo rails are unequal otherwise it will cause a stress line. It does not mean I can't measure. Notice they go past the start of the aileron otherwise it would split there. Message- always stagger stress areas. Never line them up.
Oh good... it's got it's own post-flight collection receptacle :D
Re: "post-flight collection receptacle :D"
for Bruce's airplane. ;D ;D Gotta help my friends.

@Frank v B The best part of this post is your photographs. (I am or must be getting soft.)
Only two comments about your suggested guidance notes.
1) What you mean to say is
'Offset the servo location to avoid the need to install long servo rails for the purpose of minimizing risks associated with causing a stress line that I (Frank) could have easily avoided'. (Something about hindsight.)
2) Ailerons?
I can't wait until spring and I am no longer impatient!!!!!!!
Bruce,
1) Picky, Picky.
2) ailerators elevons. Is that better?
Love the photo but I can't help but notice that out of the 6 people, only one has a full-time job. Poor Oscar.
Frank
ps"- I can hear Bruce sharpening the tips of the props so they are better at cutting ribbons and foam. I am happy to play target for the first year.
Frank
I have some Solar Film Trim, its 12 inches wide, all you have to do is cut out and stick on. You can have it, was going to through in the garbage. Let me know if you want it.
Ken
Ken.
I will take the Solarfilm trim. Thanks for thinking of us.
Frank
Hey Frank
I have a lot of stuff here and not going to use. Just happy to give it away.
Ken
Ken,
i am happy to take anything you want to get rid of that would fit into or onto an electric airplane. I will spread the stuff around TEMAC in your name.
The rule is that if I get it free, I give it free.
Frank
ps: Get rid of Cory on your pylon team. We will be happy to take him! ;) ;D ;D
Finished the Warwing so I can maiden it on Sunday's "Let's kick winter to the curb" event. ( See post http://temac.ca/smf/index.php/topic,7391.0.html)
No paint yet because it will jinx the maiden. If ugly planes last longer, this one will last forever.... or two flights in my hands. ;D
Frank
Am still scratching my head.
Did not fly the Warwing last Sunday because our Flying Insulation Specialist (Bruce) judged there was not enough thrust.
We tried several batteries and no improvement.
Went through several checks:
1) checked the throttle throw was max on the transmitter. Yes it was.
2) checked the current motor/prop/esc combo draw- only 8 amps. That's idle!
3) changed the ESC- still 8 amps.
4) changed the motor to a new G10- and increased the size of the prop from 10x7 to 11x7- only 12 amps. High idle.
5) changed the prop from an 11x7 to a 12x6. Draw increased to 16 amps. Probably flyable.
6) a freshly charged 3S battery with combo #5. The draw was still only 16 amps. ??? ???
OK, now I am open to advice from the Foam Gallery. Where do I go next? :P
Frank
Re: OK, now I am open to advice from the Foam Gallery. Where do I go next?
Likely into the corn field... ::) ::) ::) ::) :P :P :P :P :-*
I would calibrate the throttle throw for the ESC. To do that, plug the battery in the ESC, move the throttle stick to max, turn on the transmitter, the ESC should beep (once or twice) then immediately lower the throttle to min (off) the ESC will beep some more, usually in 2 groups. Now unplug your ESC from the battery and you should be good to go.

Thanks for that Simon. While I have never experienced this kind of esc/motor performance problem I will keep your suggestion in mind for the future. (Old dogs can learn new tricks. The real trick is remembering the trick when necessary.)
Better still, the suggested remedy will hopefully ensure that Frank's Warwing will be able to get into the sky and he won't have any more excuses.
Bruce,
re: "Likely into the corn field... " brilliant comeback!
re:"(Old dogs can learn new tricks. The real trick is remembering the trick when necessary.) " A very revealing post. You admit you're an "old dog", you do a "trick" and you can "remember". Talk about a multi-tasker. Wow, you really are good. ;)
Simon,
I will try it out of desperation. Thanks.
Frank
The Warwing flew fine.
The draw is now 15 amps with a 12x6 prop.
Bought the paint this morning to mimic Simon's red and white post.
Frank
Re: The Warwing flew fine.
Through no fault or credit to Frank, when it left my hand the warwing didn't need any trim. It flew perfectly. I wanted Frank to enjoy it for a while before I take mine up with his. Maybe next time?
For clarification please refer to screen capture below defining 'fine'. :-*
Paint time.
Took off all the electronics, servos and radio equipment.
Painted the stripe area white first. Then covered it in masking tape for the white stripe and painted everything red. Will let it dry overnight.

You must have fallen in love with your new Warwing after flying it to be going to so much trouble...
Remember years ago, we had these books called coloring books. They were intended to enhance youngsters coloring and painting skills so that they could stay within the lines. You could have tried to use this same principle and attempted to paint your Warwing without removing everything.
What happened to your old saying? It will look great at 50' while going 50?
Personally, I don't remember ever painting in this manner in order to obtain such a tiny white stripe.
Were you using a roller
@Frank v B ???
Let me reminisce... I also remember a time when I used spell color, colour and neighbor, neighbour. Seems like another time.
Of utmost importance to remember however is - 'IT'S JUST A WARWING'. ;D
Simon,
The Starsky and Hutch WarWing.
Bruce:
re: your comments. I took all the stuff off so I could cover up all the mistakes. You may recall I was going to try to put the prop on the old (cheap) motor to see if the draw is the same. Once that was off.. I may as well remove the rest.
I didn't use a roller. I have fine motor skills.
I painted it red so your blood would not show..... the same reason you should wear brown pants when we first meet in battle.!! ;D ;D
Frank
That is so awesome! I wish I'd thought of doing one like that! ;D
Well done frank.
The forward hooks on the wingtips will serve you well!
Michael,
They are finger emery boards so I can do my nails while waiting for Bruce to get his plane ready.
Two can play that game and I can't wait. :P
OOPS. Gravity is not just a form of severity.
Flew the Warwing on Sunday in very windy and gusty conditions... from the east. I launched to the south of the windsock but the wind immediately blew the plane back. Recovered it once. Then a second gust flipped it backwards again so I shut down the motor at about 30' altitude pointing upwind and pancaked it in on top of a chair. The backrest took a chunk out.
The repair:
1) The first photo shows the damage, peculiarly shaped like the back of a chair.
2) mixed 5 minute epoxy, spread it over the broken section, put it together and pinned it with 3 round toothpicks dipped in 5 minute epoxy. The points will be trimmed off after the glue has dried.
Since it happened when Bruce was not there he cannot get credit for the kill. He will probably start talking about the power of mental telepathy.
Frank
Frank
I have the same challenges with my warwing....
With more repairs to it and it's never been in a...... doggy fight....😞
I use epoxy with clear packing tap.... still Flies 😅..... for a few seconds.... 😦
Then more epoxy....😁
Now it looks like a Warwing ;)
Re: Since it happened when Bruce was not there he cannot get credit for the kill.
First of all, what happened cannot be considered a 'kill'. Attempted suicide, maybe. Regardless, in my experience the result is only a minor flesh wound.
Further Frank, I wouldn't take credit for the crash on my telepathic skills or on your failure to fly well...
I would attribute this crash to having taken too much care while painting it.
I can't say it enough - It's only a Warwing! (But it still looks pretty good, even after the repair.)
EDIT - It will look even better with a ribbon trailing behind it. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
re: "Now it looks like a Warwing ;)"
Wait until the surgery has been completed. That will happen tonight.
Frank
Surgery completed. 25 "stitches" later.
Done!
Frank
Frank - please ensure you only ever use red or white ribbons. Unless you can get a red AND white ribbon - that would be OK too.

So, with 25 stitches are you going to call it "Frankenstein" or "Frank & Stein" or "Frank Einstein"???
Guy,
re: "Frankenstein"
SSHHH! if the guys hear this then Bruce is going require a bolt through the cockpit, then Andy will want to make sure the bolt is made of lead and so on... ;)
Simon, red and white it will be.... especially for the Canada day event.
Frank
ps: how about Frank Incensed.
