Title: Float flying - July 14
Post by: Michael on June 08, 2019, 04:42:52 PM
The Beeton RC Flyers have given us an exclusive invitation to a float fly. Sunday July 14. Gates open at 8:30 am.

The pond is located about 300m south of the old site on the 4th line off hwy 89!  If you google "Alliston Humane Society", we are about 500m north of that location on the west side of the 4th!

They will have a BBQ available for us to cook them lunch (that's the deal). We will have an idea s to how many people are coming about a week before, and we will coordinate things.

****

I will not be there, as I will be working that day. A few volunteers are needed to bring and prepare food.

I am putting the event on my calendar.  I will bring a plane or two.  If it (they) don't fly, I too will call it (them) a boat(s).

I will help organize the lunch, once we know who is coming.

Who do we touch base with to find out how many Beeton Fliers we should expect to feed?

Bruce,

Thanks.

One week before the event I will contact Rudie Nagelmakers (Beeton) and get the number of participants we should plan for.

Hopefully "Scorch" (Gerald) can come out and help us with the BBQ.

Hey Richard,

The big Timber will be MUCH easier to fly from water than the tiny UMX Cub.

You'll do just fine  ;)

Roll Call

We need a head count for the number of TEMAC members attending this Floatfly.  Please register by posting on this topic.
Temac is supplying the lunch. You would not want to go hungry. ;)  I promised Rudie/Michael a head-count one week before the event.

I will be attending!!

Who's next?  Piker, are you in?

Bruce,

Now please answer the question.... are you coming? ;)  Putting it on your calendar does not guarantee you will be there.  Katie has had 3.5 weeks to screw up your plans. ;D
I'll shut up now. 8)

Dear @Frank v B

Once again your query proves you fail to read the content of my posts, manuals and other such things.

So lets try it again.  To help you, I have extracted the most relevant part from my post and made it clearer for your reading purposes.

"I will bring a plane or two." (further note that each word only contains one syllable)

Most people would understand that means, I will be there

This is going to be so much fun to watch @Palkina !!!  Are you going to bring a plane too or is this a levitation thing?

Regardless of how you get into the air, you will love it.  ;D

Hi @Frank v B

I saw Ken Rawlins today.  He said that he was going to go too.  He was wondering if fuel was OK?  I thought it was the last time we were out, but I don't know if it is permitted at their new pond.  Do you know?

(I am working on my aircraft that I will be bringing.  I don't do the levitation thing over water like Carlos, but in it, fat floats.)

I am looking forward to it.

Bruce,

Thanks for the post on Ken Rawlins.  Have added him. He came the last time.

re: glow fuel- my original conversations with Rudie were that we would love to come float flying and that we would fit into their club.  It was never intended to be electric only.  Beeton is still mostly fuel so we should respect their membership focus.  It is a model airplane event... with a very wet runway. ;D

OK... this may work.  Had a set of SuperCub floats and cobbled them onto my E-Flite TaylorCraft 450.  The plane has a 480 in it so it is mildly wildly overpowered.

- Removed the wheels and axles.
- added a plywood plate inside to hold the rear anchor in place.
- put the spreader rod through the axle holes in the landing gear.
- used 4 wheel collars to hold the floats in the correct place.
- added the white plastic plate to the rear plywood plate and glued it in place.  See middle photo
- screwed in the rear support with the landing gear straps and screws provided in the float kit.

It looks like it should work.  If not, I will hand launch it from the edge of the pond and fake it. ;D  After the hand-launch I will figure out how and where to land it.  Details.  Details.

Just confirming for Frank.

Yes.  I'll be there.  I'm looking forward to it.  I'll likely only have my old CL-215 though.

Directions to the pond

I asked Rudie for plain English directions for someone from the City.  I don't understand Lines and Concessions.

Hiway 400 north to 89 (Cookstown).  West on 89 until Alliston which is where 89 ends at the Dairy Queen.  There is no Drive-Through so don't create one!.  A quick left and quick right down the main drag of Alliston.  Keep going west for 8-10 minutes (I asked whether it was speed with or without a cop on your tail) past the second set of lights (Hiway 50) to the 4th Line.  Turn right (North) about 1.5 km. until you cross a little bridge.  It will be on the left.   It is about 300 meters north of the Humane Society building.

This also confirms that IC motors are welcome.

See you there.

Have done the shopping:

3 - 12 packs of pop (Coke, Diet Coke, Soda water...for Bruce and me) a case of bottled water.
60 hot dogs
60+ buns
condiments Red, green, yellow and white (mayo, for Rudie and me. ;D)
8 bags of chips.  One of the essential food groups. ;)

Bruce is bringing the serviettes (he's the clean one)
Craig is bringing the exotic diced onions.

You bring your airplanes and your sense of humour and we will have a great day.

Jim (Canuke),

You don't need an airplane to have fun!  Borrow mine.

If you can't show up, Bruce and I will be fighting over your hot dogs, chips and drinks. ;D  Help keep the peace. ;)

We had a great visit with the Beeton Club.  Perfect weather.  Sunny, (no snow) warm and an onshore breeze that pushed airplanes into the pit area.
Temac was represented by Bruce, Peter, Craig Campbell, Carlos, Richard, Gerald "Scorch" Danen, Ken Rawlins and yours truly.

About 30 people in total.  Temac brought the hot dogs, buns, condiments and drinks.  Gerald tackled the BBQ workload.

The photos:
88- Rudie and Rick test running a twin cylinder engine.
89- Richard concentrating on his plane
93- Richard doing DX programming duties on Barry's plane.
94- The Beeton Pow-Wow held by Rudie.  That's (l to r) Shawn, Frank, Steve, Chris, Scott.
95- Rudie Nagelmakers managing a smile with Scott.
96- Beeton boys Shawn, Steve and Chris
97- Scorch Danen at work.  He BBQ'd 60 dogs with just the perfect amount of carbon on each dog.
98- More Beeton Boys..... Frank and John.
99- What happens when you drop a tube steak off the BBQ.  Mitsy grabs it.  To heck with the 5 second rule.
00- Craig and Bruce
01- Peter and his Seawind Float plane before the accidental nose job.
03- Bruce, Ken and Peter flying
04- the Beeton Navy doing retrieval duties.  Rudie operating the bow turret and Ensign Chris handling the propulsion system.  Note: electric!!
06- Rick Byers before a flying session with his Polaris.
13- Bruce's Icon

They promised to have us back next year.

The Beeton Navy... that's excellent.

Did everyone's floats do their job?
Title: Re: Float flying - July 14
Post by: bweaver on July 14, 2019, 08:31:54 PM
@davidk - Everyone's floats did their job, whether they were on the water, in the air, or you guess where.  Even Carlos flew off water with his plane and landed it again successfully on the pond with the plane in its correct orientation. Considering how many of us turned turtle, Carlos was exceptionally successful considering it was his first float fly.

Regarding @Frank v B 's comment about it being an 'on shore breeze';  it is a pond, regardless which way the wind is blowing, it is always going to be an on shore breeze.  For that matter there will always be an off shore breeze there as well. Go figure  ???

A nice breeze it was mind you.  Scorch (Gerrald) did a great job of BBQing and Frank did a great job of organizing.

The Beeton gang were wonderfully hospitable and efficient when it came to aircraft recovery.   They have a fantastic float flying site which we were so fortunate to be invited to. Thanks so much... I think speaking for all the TEMAC members that attended, we had a great time.   8)

Bruce,

re: your comment
"Regarding @Frank v B 's comment about it being an 'on shore breeze';  it is a pond, regardless which way the wind is blowing, it is always going to be an on shore breeze.  For that matter there will always be an off shore breeze there as well. Go figure  ???"

Two comments:

1) On-shore is relative to the shore you are standing on or sailing towards.  I know you never know where you are going to land so you probably consider any shore part of your landing pattern. :D
2) On a macro scale, every ocean on earth is circled by shores or ice* and has always been since man walked the earth.... according to your thought process there can never be an "on-shore" or "off-shore" breeze.  Try to explain that one to Chris Columbus, Sam Champlain, Captain Jim Cook, etc. who used winds to their advantage on a global scale.  ;) 8)

Frank (Who else?)

* before you say it, please consider the Straits below South America and South Africa as very big and wild river inlets.

@Frank v B regarding your comment (about my comment); "according to your thought process there can never be an "on-shore" or "off-shore" breeze."

First you assumed I had a 'thought process'. Katie said you give me far too much credit. Thank you.

Secondly, I stated - "it is a pond, regardless which way the wind is blowing, it is always going to be an on shore breeze.  For that matter there will always be an off shore breeze there as well. Go figure  ??? "

This makes me wonder how your thought process came to the conclusion that according to my thought process there can never be an on-shore or off-shore breeze.

Even with what limited thought processes I may have, I would never have come to that conclusion.  Based on your comment and your conclusions, that obviously means you were in agreement with me from the start and I didn't even have to expand the scale of my logic from beyond a pond, to oceans, rivers, straights, ice and what have you.

Blame it on 'climate change' and be done with it.  :D

* I know Mr Hoffer, the proper English sentence would be "Look with whom I am arguing".  You can't end a sentence with a preposition. ;)
** yes, I am jealous.

And if you notice, I am the only one flying... now you can really be jealous.  The sky was to myself.

The gang in the background should try this trick rather than huddling together under a 3' umbrella.  At one point while everyone was in the huddle the accumulated heat below created a thermal which caused their shade to fly away.

PS I was flying an electric glider which didn't take too much 'work', but resulted in plenty of enjoyment.
