Title: CUB FUN-DAY July 2nd 2017
Post by: bweaver on June 13, 2017, 12:38:35 PM

Let's have a CUB FUN-DAY on Sunday July 2nd from 1 p.m. on!

What an iconic aircraft the Piper Cub is!  Let's celebrate this fantastic aircraft by having a Cub Fun-Day at TEMAC Rogo Field.

It was this plane that got me into aviation and model aircraft...  I've never looked back. (Well only on occasion.)

Bring your Cub to the field.

If you don't have a CUB of any sort, any 'yellow aircraft' will do.

If you don't have a CUB or a 'yellow aircraft' any 'high-wing aircraft' will do.

If you don't have a CUB, 'yellow aircraft' or 'high-wing aircraft' any aircraft with a wing or two will do.

Just come out.  Have fun flying and enjoy the company of all the other TEMAC members that can make it.

Great idea Bruce! As long as the weather is decent, I'll be there!
There were/are several versions of the "Cub" but probably the best known is the yellow J-3. While some sources say the J-3 first flew in 1938, a few list 1937 as the beginning of J-3 production, making 2017 the 80th birthday of the J-3! Happy Birthday!
Will change to Canadian markings on my Carbon Cubs to add Canadian content to this event, the day after Canada's 150th birthday!
With all these high number birthdays to celebrate, suddenly I don't feel so old! ;D

Bruce,

I'll try to be there.  I have an L4 Grasshopper.  It doesn't like me (???) but I will try my best to have it behave.

The video below depicts a young mans first flight in a Piper Cub.

I was around seven.  Fortunately for me my next door neighbor owned one.  No one in his family liked to fly... so I would get invited to go along on occasion.

He had it hangered at Buttonville.  At the time it was a very small airport.  We would fly to various airports around the area.  Land there. I would have a hot chocolate and we would take off and return home. Yes on beautiful days we would fly with the door open too.  Because I was small at the time (can you imagine) I occupied the front seat.  On a number of times I was allowed to fly it. (At least I thought I was).

Loved this plane.  Loved the experience.  Still love the plane. Thanks Uncle Wally and Piper.

Don't forget, a week from Sunday is Cub Fun Day at TEMAC.  Get your Cub(s) primed and ready to fly.

In 1937/38, a brand new J3 sold for $1000-$2000 USD...

Mr. Nutz,

Now a quarter scale electric model with brand name equipment goes for $1,000- $2,000!.

Of course in 1938 you would be wealthy if you pulled in $1,000 per year. ;D

Maybe you should hang on to the quarter scale model Simon...at the same rate as the 1937 J3, your $600 model will be worth $45,000 in eighty years and you get to fly it in the meantime!

Mr. Nutz,

re: "... will be worth $45,000 in eighty years"

...but then we have to put up with Simon for another eighty years.

I suppose worse things could happen. ;)

I have wiped the dust off of her and she is ready for flight come July 2nd at the Cub Fun Day afternoon.

This is my Sig Clipped Wing Cub.   Flies well and repairs easily.

I bet she'll be one of the prettiest Cubs there, unless... you bring out yours.

What have you got?

:D

Bruce,

re:"... any 'yellow aircraft' will do."

So you ask us to bring a yellow Cub or plane and you are planning to come to the party with a white one. I guess if you organize the party you can make up the rules as you go along. ;D

Mine is Green Drab.  (L4 Grasshopper).  "Green" describes the colour, "Drab" describes the pilot. :)

There is a difference between; "... any 'yellow aircraft' will do." or "bring a yellow cub"

Now I can see why Donald Tr.... is upset with being misquoted or misunderstood.

Now if you really want to make the event fun we'll put your drab green 'grasshopper' up against my white cub.  Better yet, bring some ribbon.....

Only Frank has picked up on Bruce's challenge, so here's one of the Cubs I'm bringing and yes, it's white (I think most Super Cubs were)...but it's Canadian! The real plane is a Canadian PA-18 bush plane on floats with a red spinner. Will do the floats and spinner when I get time. The model is an eFlite Super Cub 25e...slightly modified to Wingnutz's specifications (moved the rudder and elevator servos as I didn't like where eFlite put 'em and changed registration to a real Canadian Super Cub)

Great! Was this picture taken in Australia.

Now everyone understands the challenge Bill.

Bring out your CUB(S),  bring out your CUB(S), bring out your CUB(S)...

(If not a CUB bring out something and pretend it is a CUB - 'boy scouts excluded')

Bruce,

Sorry to inform you that.... I am planning to show up. ;)

Flew my L4 Grasshopper on Wednesday so it is ready to go.  My Carbon Cub flew two weeks ago so it is also ready.  No other Cubs in my stable.

Now if we could only get Andy to show up my day would be complete ly ruined. ;D

Will get there early (10-ish) so put me to work when you get there.

Frank

My worst nightmare just came true.

"I will definitely be there to make Frank's day! 8)"

Just to start off absolutely on the right foot, let's meet at Tim's Woodbine for 10 am for a caffeine top-up. I will buy the coffee for anyone there at 10 am.  Then we can don our boots per BJ's advice. I know I can count on Michael, Bruce and Graham to cash in on the offer.  Andy will be tempted.

It will take Andy a half hour to get into his layered weather gear and boots.  I thought TEMAC was a flying club, not a Scuba club. :)

I hope you have had a wonderful CANADA DAY.

I hope you will have way more fun tomorrow, Sunday at TEMACs CUB FUN-DAY.

Come out and have a great time while flying with your friends.

Bring your CUB,  or if you don't have one, bring a substitute.

;D

Bruce,

Thanks for a organizing a great day.

Sorry I had to leave early to be home for our guests arriving at 4:30 for a BBQ. It was fun.

Thanks to Graham for running the BBQ., Simon, Greg and Andy for supplying the things for Graham to burn. Graham served it the way you liked it.... first, second or 3rd degree burns! ;D

Good to see the people who have not had much of a chance to drop by this summer like Greg H., Andy, Peter P., Don and Rosie Duthie , etc.
The skills (or lack of it) competition was fun and nicely disrespectful.

It started to rain when I got west of Kennedy Road.  Hope it spared you.

I had a blast...  Thanks to everyone for coming out.

Here are the standings for those courageous soles who took up the CUB FUN-DAY challenge.

Rob won - Rob tied with Frank V B with 65 points each, however Rob was faster in the Dash Event than Frank by a mere 6 seconds.

Frank, "how does feel to loose $7,000,000 by just 6 seconds?"

Rob, similarly with your win today, I sincerely hope your luck holds up on collecting that $7,000,000 this coming Wednesday.

In the Non-Cub 'looser category' (remember it was CUB DAY) we had Thomas and Richard tied with 50 points each, however Thomas just squeezed by Richard by only one second

Unfortunately in this category, Thomas only goes home with 'Bragging Rights' for his efforts, while Richard goes home with his 'wings'.  (Congratulations to you both.)

Honorable mention (in flying order only) goes to Michael, Simon, Vic, Glenn, Vadim and Adam.

Micheal you forgot to pick up your epoxy....  :'(

I hope to see some photo's of the activities posted. I forgot to bring my camera.

Thanks so much to everyone who got soaked helping me in the rain.

Anybody off work tomorrow, to fly?

Thanks for organizing the Cub day Bruce. I once was flying into Tampa. The pilot just greased it on, just a perfect landing. On the way out of the plane, as we went by the cockpit, I asked "which one of you guys landed that". It happened to be the first officer, and so I told him that was the best landing I have ever been on board a plane for. I remember his reply. "Better lucky than good". So I will borrow his words. I arrived at the field late and discovered the tail wheel was broken, and not attached to the rudder or plane. I did not have time for a flight today until I took off for my attempt. The tailwheel was held on by scotch tape . Things just seemed to go right from the start. So I will say, better lucky than good. I had a great time. Too bad the weather came in, but tomorrow looks good so I hope to be at the field earlier than today.

Great to read that Rob was the winner of the $7,000,000.  Just try to collect.  Careful, don't knock on Bruce's door to collect.  Cha-Cha, his 6 pound killer dog will make quick work of the collection issue.  Problem solved. :D

You beat up on my poor little Cub.  I just weighed it.... 11.9 oz. or about 1/4 the weight of yours!  Pick on someone your own size.  I heard more than once today that size does matter. :)
Too bad Richard could not fly his E-Flite cub, the same as mine.  I cheated because I did not follow the instructions.  The motor on mine is a 3 cell 300, not the recommended 2 cell 250. As well, the battery was a 700 mah.   All to get the weight farther forward.  There is nothing more difficult than flying a tail-heavy Cub.  It wallows and then does a death roll if it even smells a tail-heavy condition.

My apologies, to BJ.  Somehow, in my earlier post, I missed BJ in the list of honorable mentions in yesterday's event ... sorry.

PS - Life moves on.  It looks like another flying day today.
