Title: Invasion Stripes...
Post by: RogMason on June 12, 2019, 06:55:55 PM
Guys,
Here's a great period photo of invasion stripes being hurriedly painted on a Spitfire.  You can imagine the panic involved as the invasion was announced the morning of and the ground crews worked through the night to add stripes to all aircraft participating in the next day's events.  Little wonder they were rough edged?  Also of interest, is the long range drop tank under the fuselage, transforming the Spitfire from a short range defensive aeroplane, into a long range offensive aircraft.  These 'drop' tanks were made from papier-mâché and therefore rendered disposable. The RAF used 13,000 drop tanks during the invasion.

Sooner or later, some brave modeler is going to risk the look of his/her model and have authentic, 'rough edged' invasion stripes?
