Title: Avro Arrow C-105
Post by: GuyOReilly on June 08, 2022, 09:06:30 PM
The start of something new and interesting.   ;D
Kit is Models By John that was given to me by the estate of my friend John Riley (a different John than the kit manufacturer).
It will be powered by a single ducted fan, 80 AMPS ESC and 5-6 cells.  I am told it is more than ample power for the model.
Step one: Open the box and look at the goodies inside, see pictures.
Step 2: trial fit a few pieces, see pictures.
Step 3: read the instruction manual for the 5th time.
Step 4: I did not get that far yet, I need to buy more glue.  :(

#72 - The Box
#73 - The some of the Box contents
#74 - More things in the Box
#75 - Trial fitting the tail end and bottom pieces on the sides
#76 - View of the tunnel
#77 - View of the bottom, from the front

More progress, it now looks like an Avro Arrow (50/50 rule @Frank v B ) ;)
Construction is blue foam, some needing shaping, such as the nose cone: take a triangular block and make a round (roundish) cone with it.
Power will be using this 10 blade fan with an 80 amp ESC and 5 or 6 cells LiPos.
Model is light; slightly less than 14 ounces at this stage.
Next is more shaping and sanding, and adding carbon fibre reinforcements in strategic places.

Photo # 90 - Model is large, larger than I first thought.  Storage might be a problem.
Photo # 91 - The power unit front view.

Guy,

More than beats the 50/50* rule.

As Glenn will tell you, the CG on the Avro Arrow is at the shark's tooth on the leading edge.

Keep going!

Guy,

re: "Plenty of power!!"

30 seconds at full power and your shop is dust-free. 8)
So you clamped down the motor....but did you tie down the Workmate??

I did not like the droopy nose.
The before and after rhinoplastic surgery.

03 - Before.
05 - After rhinoplastic surgery.

Plane was ready for a maiden flight.
Hand launch on 4cells not adequate.
A dolly will be constructed along with a bungie cord and towline contraption.
Also, will probably gonto 6 cells.
Thank you @Frank v B for holding back on going full power when I was looking for fudder.
You are not fired, just yet...

Whilst charging the batteries this morning, I noticed that the one used was a 3-cell.
Definitely not enough power.
This may be why we did not achieve flying speed.

Using a 4S battery should give you a noticeable increase in thrust. Good luck!

Guy,

re: "I noticed that the one used was a 3-cell".

Phew!  That's like asking me to test drive a car you have built with one wheel missing.  I prefer 4 wheelers. ;)
Great video by Colin via his drone.
re: the test flight.  Some people dowse for water.  Your plane successfully dowsed for broken chairs.

I think outfitter companies like Mountain Equipment Coop sell bungee cord of various thickness by the yard. You may be able to get the exact length and thickness you need.

Guy,

Should be interesting.  I will get the bungee to you.

...so after you took this video, did you go upstairs and tell your wife your project worked and you finished dusting the basement floor at the same time. ;D
