Title: Lipo's From Hobby King
Post by: Polecat on September 24, 2013, 08:56:18 PM
Has anyone read the thread Hobby King shipping problems On RCCanda.
Well it looks like they can't ship lipo's by Swiss Air, so our cheap source has dryed up for now.
Just hope anyone hasn't placed an order or plan on ordering some lipo's.
So the only source now is the LHS.

Ken, could you post a link to that thread?  My last battery order from HK was made on the 20th Aug and arrived Sept 5th no problems.  I also just put through a dummy order after reading your post and there was also no problem?

I have not had any issues with batteries?  Not sure what is going on?

It seems to be orders with lipos in them are being returned to Hobby King.  Issue seems to have started part way into September.  Said to be a local issue at Customs and the package never makes it onto a plane.  I would advise not to order any lipos from them at the present time till things are sorted out.
This is happening at the International Warehouse in Hong Kong.  My understanding is if your order has no lipos,  the parcel proceeds normally through shipping.

I have a small lipo order with only 10 of the single cells for indoor planes and it is stuck in the printing queue for a week now.  I ordered them about two days before I read that RC Canada posting containing the warning. ::)

I have received 1 lipo order that was ordered early Sept, and I have another lipo order from Mid Sept that is stuck in the print queue.

Sounds like Chris' theory could be right.

Although I read that some people are blaming the value % that Customers are declaring.  The default is 30% of order value. This apparently may be what Customs have an issue with.

I wonder where they will be shipping them from now? The last time this happened they started using swiss post and lipos started taking the long way around the globe to arrive here. My guess is not they will be sent to an Antarctic research post first, then travel by dog sled for a while before ending up on a Japanese fishing vessel, and then lastly shipped by carrier pigeon.

Maybe Simon will tell us the carrier as his has shipped.  My package is still in the print queue.
At least packages are finally trickling out and I am hoping mine will soon be one of them.

My order's been shipped too. I had made a complaint to hobbyking's customer service and got a response back from "Ken" saying:

When I have tracked my order which was shipped early in September from HK, Singapore post tracking indicated that it was transferred to the airline on September 10th.  Subsequent tracking has failed to indicate that the order has gone any further.  For twenty days it has been up in the air (no pun intended).  I am still waiting for the order to arrive in Canada, let alone get to my home.

Got this from them today:

RE: Battery Shipping from International Warehouse

Please notice, we have recently been informed by some of our shipping partners that they will no longer be able to ship orders containing lithium based batteries on behalf of HobbyKing from our International Warehouse. As a result, orders placed between 23 September 2013 and 2 October 2013 may have been affected and returned to the International Warehouse.

The shipping options that this will affect are EMS, Singpost, Registered Mail, Air Parcel and China Post.

If your order has been affected, HobbyKing will be upgrading your chosen freight option at no extra cost to you to ensure that you receive your order in a timely fashion.

As a long term solution, HobbyKing will be implementing new shipping suppliers in the following days. Alternatively, we would recommend that you place battery orders through any of our regional warehouses, all of whom have an excellent range of lithium based batteries.

Please note: This will NOT affect orders placed after 2 October 2013.

We at HobbyKing thank you for your continued support and custom and appreciate your patience and understanding in this matter.

Thankfully,
Anthony Hand
President

I've been there before Imran. It's a real hassle. Hobby King likes to live on the edge in terms of adhering to customs and shipping rules. While this gives us cheap batteries. Every once and a while this type of thing happens.

I've learned long ago not to count on prompt delivery. Especially with LiPo's so my usual approach is to order one large batch in the dead of winter, that way I won't worry if they take an extra few weeks.

Title: Re: Lipo's From Hobby King

After receiving that email from Hobby King I did a test order to see what has changed.  I didn't purchase any.  I only threw some lipos in the cart and proceeded through the steps but stopped before I was redirected to Paypal.
Interesting to note.  There is only one shipping method available to us now with lipos.
Fedex Priority.  Three weight options.

999 Grams  -- $24.09
1999 Grams -- $30.47
2999 Grams -- $35.25

I wonder if we will be dinged at this end for brokerage fees too.

There was also a warning note under the cart at the beginning that many of the shipping options listed were not available to ship lipos.

Yes, I am still sitting in the print queue. Two weeks now.

Oh well, the hobby king party lipo is over then. Time to go back to supporting our local hobby shops. There's no way I would go with FedEx.

Over on RC Canada someone has ordered lipos through the Fedex option.  I am waiting to see the outcome.  It will depend if there are any additional costs before I would order any more.  If not, I could see waiting and make bigger orders or groups orders.
Actually in the past, it didn't take many lipos to add the shipping costs up into the $15 area for the International register option.

Simon, where are your lipos now?

I would expect that FedEx will charge a brokerage fee, to clear the shipment through Canadian Customs, we will be charged 13% taxes on the brokerage fee plus 13% on the value of the shipment. I had a couple of shipments from the US that was shipped by FedEx a few years ago and this happen to me, never again. Its just outrageous!!!

I use towerhobbies.com instead of hobbyking now. There shipping is fast and cheap and there are no brokerage fees or taxes applied at the border. They ship from Chicago using USPS. Compared to hobby stores or horizon hobby they are fairly cheap. I bought a great planes tiger shark (receiver ready)  for $150 and when i asked my local hobby shop they said $300. Shipping was only $20. They have many batteries, connectors, motor, adapter etc.. I bought membership to there website and i get $10 off shipping and i just received a whole bunch of coupons giving me 20% or 10% off.  Shipping took almost 2 weeks. They also have a easy pay plan for many products where u can pay for the product in increments over 3 months, which i did use.

So it costs $10 more to ship a LiPo.. Big deal guys. It still costs less to to buy batteries from hobbyking than locally. Unfortunately you can now only buy 2 batteries instead of 3 for the same price as a local battery..

Title: Re: Lipo's From Hobby King

I ordered just after their notices regarding the customs issue.

I have 2 other lipo orders that were ordered at the end of Sept, at the time the customs/postage issue was going on.

One says it has shipped and has given me a tracking number but that doesn't work.

The second has not yet shipped yet, but I got an email about it being upgraded to another shipping method.

I suspect once things settle down it will be fedex plus the brokerage fees.  It will still be cheaper than the big name brands at the local shop for mid grade performance.

It looks as if Hobby King is catching up and getting past this little shipping hic-cup.  A big white Fedex truck delivered my lipos and other rc items today.  I placed my order back Sept 18 and it basically sat in the print queue for almost a month.  I decide to wait till they sorted out the shipping problems.
All of a sudden I received an email from the Hobby Checker on Oct 15th and my package was out the door on the 16th.  As promised, Hobby King upgraded my shipping to Fedex at no cost and then the order really started to move.  It left China at 2:30 pm on the 17th and arrived at my door at 1:15 pm on the 18th.  That was less than 24 hours with Fedex. ;D
If you know Fedex tracking, every couple hours you could see your package move across the world.

There was no brokerage or HST at the door but I may still receive it in the mail.  I will update if I do.
So don't fear your lipo packages are shipping now (as long as you didn't cancel you order) and travelling on those Fedex rocket planes.

I will say, I did received a very large box full of air.  I think all the packaging weighed more than the actual contents I ordered.

Kind of wished I had ordered more lipos at the time.

Working on my next HK order.

A satisfied Hobby King customer!

Chris

Hobby King first posted a 8 digit number for tracking and that didn't work for me either.  When my package entered the Fedex system, my tracking number changed to a 12 digit number and that work for the short time Fedex had my package.

You will get a bill in the mail for the brokerage and taxes.
Still a way better deal than UPS IIRC.

Good news out of this would be if HK have made a deal on rates with Fedex. Judging by the video they do enough volume to have a bit of clout.
Digikey for example only charges $8 shipping for overnight service from the US, way below regular rates.

So far, the only ones I have read about being billed for brokerage and HST was at the time of delivery of the package at the door.

The $14 bucks was that brokerage fee and HST? What was the shipping charges by Fedx from HK, as one of our E F1 guys was wanting to order some Nanotechs 2700 4c 65c.
The only other pack is Dinogys 2600 4c 65c and they have to be ordered from the US, shipped Fedx.

Here are the Fedex costs I posted earlier in the thread.

There is only one shipping method available to us now with lipos.
Fedex Priority.  Three weight options.

999 Grams  -- $24.09
1999 Grams -- $30.47
2999 Grams -- $35.25

As mentioned earlier there was a $10 brokerage fee and HST on the value of the package that came in the mail from Fedex.
To break it down.  The declared value of the parcel was converted to Canadian Dollars from the stated US value and then the HST was added.  There was also HST added to the $10 brokerage fee. (I didn't think that was right! >:()
The days of throwing a single lipo in a shipment are now over.  The only way to make it cost effective are larger or group orders.

This only effects the lipos shipments.  You can still have the cheap shipping for motors, esc's etc.

You know what, I must be smokin' something cos I can't fin that order in my HK history!

I'm thinking now that maybe it wasn't my 6S 4000mAh and that was $75 shipped.

It may have been my new 3S 1300mAh race batteries or my new 3S 450mAh lipos for my little Cessna.

I'll check later and make sure I present facts, so everyone can make informed decisions.

I told you guys they would send you a bill ;)

$10 brokerage is not bad, I think Canada Post is at $6 now.
And HST on top of the brokerage fee has always been the case. Brokerage is a service, so they have to tax you.

At least it is a flat $10 fee, way better deal than UPS.

Hey Guys,  I was just on the Hobby King Site.  I noticed that they have added a new shipping option for Lipos besides Fedex.
It is much cheaper than Fedex.
I threw a 3s 40c 2200 mah lipo in the cart and the shipping option was International Registered Airmail Lipo -- $7.49 shipping.
We might be back in business.

Alternatively, you can remove the Lithium based batteries in your cart and continue to payment"

I quit the transaction when all the selections for shipping came up.
Did the warning come up after you chose the shipping method?

I tried it out and received the pop up message too.  Crud!

I wonder if it is a glitch in the system or a shipping method that will appear in the future.

The standard Canada post brokerage fee is now $9.95.  Two or three years ago it used to be $5.
So $10 for FedEx is quite good, but why aren't shipments under $20 slipping through??

Have you received a parcel that has been valued under $20 and still dinged?
Mine was just under $50.

I just ordered some Lipos from Hobbyking. When it came to check out, there was only one option, Fedex for $31

To my amazement they arrived at my door TWO days after being shipped. No tax, no import duty.

I got four batteries, 3cell, 2200.

It was the same price for two batteries, so I think $31 must be the minimum

See earlier posts in the thread - you will likely be getting a bill in the mail for taxes + $10 brokerage. :'(

But good to know that the service is fast, just have to make sure you maximize the value of the order versus the shipping fees.

Yep, fast shipping but you are paying for that with the higher shipping price.  Do expect the bill in the mail from Fedex.  My bill took two weeks to arrive from the time the parcel was delivered to the door.

I ordered four LiPos,  3 cell 2200,  and had them shipped by FedEx, for $30. They came in TWO days !!!

Now I just got a bill from FedEx for $14 -- tax and handling fee.

Still a good deal.

I think at that rate it might finally make sense to go by thunderpower packs at Pinnacle when you need a battery.

Don't forget to factor in the price of gas getting there :)

A buddy of mine used to own a LHS in Richmond Hill. He would have guys come in and tell him something was $5 cheaper at Hobby Hobby.
He generally suggested they drive over to the other side of the city to buy it there. :)

I ordered some stuff from HK on the 16th, including a couple of small Lipos just to see how the new shipping worked out.
Got it on the 20th, then two days later HK sent me notification that it had been shipped  ???

Waiting on the Fedex bill, but for ~$30 at least they got it to me fast.

Time to update this thread.  It looks like Hobby King has sorted out their shipping issues and we have the cheaper International shipping option again.

I decided to place a small order of lipos from Hobby King to test if things are back to normal.
I was able to use the International shipping option and around 24h later, I received the email notice that my parcel is out the warehouse door and Malaysia Post is the shipper.
Shipping costs have increased a little to what they were before the previous mess started but much cheaper than Fedex prices.
I am expecting around 3 weeks till I receive it.
It is nice to be able to place small orders of lipos again.

One note on Malaysia Post tracking. The Hobby King link doesn't take you to the correct page. Make sure you click on the PosDaftar link and enter you tracking number there.

A few days ago a received my HK order ($170) but I declared as 10%.... no taxes, no brokerage fees, no issues.... and yeah, LIPOs included :)

I used Fedex.... also, if you have a Fedex account, you won't pay brokerage fees anyway.... and Fedex account is free (they will get your CC, but it's ok)

Expect a bill in the mail about two weeks after delivery requesting the brokerage fees and HST on the total value listed from Fedex.  Yes you can avoid the brokerage with a Fedex Account to what I have read.

Update on my International registered Lipo order.  It looks like it is stuck in the mail due to the Chinese New Year for now.

Hi Chris,
I am telling you, if your package declaration is $20 or less, there's no HST / duties... I just checked my fedex account, my balance is zero  8)

I was wondering where the limit was when Fedex started to collect the HST.

That is a very good question. When I called Fedex to check duties / taxes, they told me "since your package was less than 20 bucks, there's no duty / tax".

My HK order by the old International shipping method arrived today.  I was expecting 3 weeks but it was just shy of a month.  Maybe the Chinese New Year slowed things up.  Anyway it looks like Lipos are shipping as before.
