This Friday, 15 September is Battle of Britain Day, when the RAF out-did itself defending Britain against the might of the Luftwaffe.

Here's another more scary example...
Intercepting and escorting a Soviet 'Bear' nuclear bomber in the '60's. 
Can you imagine the tension...?

RAF English Electric Lightning :
55,000 +ft/min climb rate. Able to break the sound barrier in a vertical climb.
