Greetings builders,

I'm starting a Balsa USA 1/5 scale Piper J-3 Cub kit (electric conversion) and have hit a decision point on servos. The manual is a bit vague, just specifying "4-5 standard servos."

For those who have built this or a similar-sized model:

What torque range (in oz-in) have you found sufficient for the ailerons and elevator on this plane?

Are digital servos worth the investment for a slow-flying scale model like this, or would reliable analog servos suffice?

Any strong brand preferences for good value and durability? (I'm familiar with Hitec and Savox, but open to others).

I'm aiming for reliability over ultra-high performance. I'll be posting a build log once I get a bit further along!

Thanks for your help,

Michael

"Standard" servos are in fact a specific size. They are approx. 40mm long (not counting the mounting tabs), approx. 37mm tall (not counting the servo arm) and approx. 20mm wide.

Brand new, good quality, brand name, analogue, standard-size servos cost around $30. each.

These would be just fine for a 1/5th size Cub.

You're putting together a nice airplane, so I would recommend buying new servos. Don't risk your expensive plane with used servos to save a few bucks.

Also, I don't know your flying skills, but flying a Cub is more challenging than flying a trainer. Seek out some assistance for your first few flights.
