Title: Starting off the season
Post by: Michael on April 08, 2005, 04:19:03 PM
The weather forecast has Friday, Sat and Sunday as dry. If it's not too windy, I'm planning on going to to the TEMAC field to "survey" the condition of the ground, and perhaps have a few "test" flights.

The ground will probably be soggy, so I'll bring boots.

Then I'll go and buy the new fencing to meet the new MAAC requirements.

I'm planning on going at about 11am. I'll confirm with another post on Sunday morning.

I'd like to sneak away and check out the field too.  Let me know

Sunday.

Nothing big or expensive; probably a few parkflyers.

I'll confirm early Sunday morning.

I should be at TEMAC at about 11am. I'll be checking out the field, measuring for a new fence, and having a few test flights.

Any other member is welcome to come by and have a flight or two. Even though the season hasn't officially started, all safety rules apply.

The ground will likely be very wet. Be careful where you park and bring boots just in case.

I'm interested in joining TEMAC this year.  When would be a good date/time to come and check-out the field and say hello?  When does the season formally start?

The season will probably start (formally) sometime in May, when the field will be dry and accessable by car. An announcement will be posted on this TEMAC message board.

I'll also post when people will be out flying so you can come and visit. You're welcome to fly a plane to try out our field, but you must have a MAAC membership/insurance.

If you need help flying, TEMAC offers instruction and assistance.

We currently have 40 members paid through the 2005 calendar year. I expect a few more members will join as the weather improves.

I'm looking forward to this season at TEMAC.

I've stocked up on 2-1/2" wheels (thanks Nick for your suggestion) in hopes of ROG takeoffs and smooth landings...maybe even touch-'n-go. With progressive field improvements I suspect I'll be able to reduce wheel diameter a bit each year.

After destroying a gearbox-motor combo late in the season I'm now concentrating on pusher trainers...a WINGO, and an EasyStar.

Hope to get my wings this year.

It is nice to notice a warm season is comming up.

This year I have got myself a Slow-stick, an Easystar and a Cessna-182.  I wish to earn my Wing this year ;)

The Wingo, Easystar and Slowstick are excellent trainers.

I'm sure you will both get your WINGS soon (I'll help too) and enjoy many hours of flight.

It has been pointed out to me that someone (or some people) have driven towards the flying field, and have caused some damage to the field.

Please stay off the (very wet) driveway and field until an official announcement that TEMAC is open (approx early to mid May 2005).

Rain is predicted for this weekend and for next week.  Please stay off the TEMAC field for a little while more. I'm planning on installing a new fence at TEMAC during the first week of May and announcing an opening day shortly after.

Glenn Nikolaiko and I met up at TEMAC this morning. Roy Martin came by too. While some of the surrounding areas are messy and wet, the actual field is looking nice (flat and with more grass than last year). The whole area is quite wet, but that didn't stop us from getting a little flying done. Glenn flew a profile 3D foamy and his small Tangent pattern plane. I flew my Sky Arrow parkflyer and my large Diablotin. These planes flew well despite the gusty conditions. As the wind got stronger, we decided to stop.

As mentioned last time, please do not drive all the way into the field since the driveway is very wet. The long range forecast is calling for sunny, dry and warm conditions into next weekend. Hopefully the field will be dry and we can do some good flying. I will purchase and install a new fence, late one evening this week, or perhaps Saturday mid to late afternoon. If anyone can help (and wants to fly a little as well), please let me know.

I'm planning to go flying on Saturday morning.  I'll bring a shovel and plan to stick around for some manual labour if possible.  I feel like digging ditches and building roads

Michael, I have a small sledge hammer that I'll bring along too.  Great for pounding in fence posts.

I'm planning for Saturday because Sunday is Mom's day.

I'm probably going up Thursday late afternoon - early evening, Saturday mid to late afternoon and/or Sunday morning.

I will confirm on this board before I go.

I should be there by 5pm to start installing a fence, failing which I'll fly.

I purchased more orange plastic fencing (4 foot height) and wood posts from the lumber yard next to the field. I put some of the posts in today, and will finish the job this Saturday afternoon between 3pm and 5pm, and/or early Sunday morning.

The flight area has a good amount of nice green grass on it, and it is reasonably flat. I have been able to take off and land with wheels of 2 inch diameter. (I've done a fair bit of flying too.)

Please note the following:

1. The new flight line is exactly 100' east of the parking fence. Please respect this flightline and fly safely.

2. The driveway is still very muddy. Please park before the tree-line and walk in. A 4x4 SUV can drive left (east) at that point towards the flight area and around the muddy areas, and then back to the parking area. Some areas need to be filled in before it is smooth enough for cars to drive in.

3. There is some damage to the older fences and the frequency board. If anyone wants to repair them, go ahead, if not I'll get to them eventually.

4. There is still some garbage left from last year. If anyone can clean up a bit and get rid of the garbage, please do so, if not I'll get to it eventually.

************************************

If anyone wants to help, or ask any questions, please call me tomorrow (Friday May 6) between 9am and 5pm at my office: 416-784-4261.

TEMAC should officially be open by the May 21 weekend. Grass cutting should start about then too.

I'll be getting a late start on Saturday, so will hopfully get to TEMAC around noon.  I'll then try to do some flying then be available to help out when you get there.

Anyone else coming out?

Robert

I'll definitely be there on Saturday, probably around 11 or so, and will be glad to help out with anything that needs doing.

I put in several posts already. If anyone wants to put in more, please keep in mind, they need to be about 5 feet apart, and each fence (set of posts) should be just under 50 feet long, with an open section in the middle. The posts' height should about equal to those I already installed. A big hammer is neccessary to install these posts. I left the posts near one of the tables.

We may also need some heavy string or wire and some stakes to support the outer posts.

I have the fencing with me, and a staple gun, which I will bring to the field before 4pm.

If anyone could straighten out the fencing near the parking, it would be appreciated.

If nobody wants to work, don't worry, just have fun.

Stay away if it rains.

If it stays dry today, I'll be there as planned.

If it rains, I won't be there this afternoon, but I will early tomorrow morning.

What a great day!

There were flyers at TEMAC from mid-morning until after 5pm.

The farmer put wood chips all over the driveway, and we could carefully drive in. The field is in relatively good condition, and we flew all kinds of planes: park flyers, trainers, 3D, profile foamies, large aerobatic and large 3D.

We flew so much, we hardly got any work done. Robert Pike, Adam Rogozinsky and I finished installing 1/2 of the new fence. I'll do some more tomorrow morning.

I want to get a little work done on the field, but I see no reason why the May 21/22 weekend shouldn't be our official opening weekend.

Yes, I was there from 11:30 'til after 5:00.  Glenn, Ben, Gordon, and I were flying for the early afternoon, then Michael and Adan showed up around 3:00.  The wind was reasonable all afternoon and calmed right down around 4:00.  I was even able to fly a couple of 6-7 oz indoor models.

It's so nice to have a flying field where everything electric, from big to small, fast to slow is welcome and enjoyed by all.

The more people we have out on a regular basis the better.  It's flying season guys.  Let's make the best of it.

What a great flying day, with good friends and cool planes!  The field is in very good condition.  I'm looking forward to a terrific season.

More great flying on Sunday.

The weather was really nice, and a few flyers showed up, even though it was mother's day.

I flew my new Funtata again, after some minor repairs; the gear box came off in flight yesterday.

At one point there was absolutely no wind, and we could take off and land in any direction.

It appears that members are beginning to find afternoon flying more pleasurable; the sun is behind us and the wind begins to calm down.

The field needs some work; I'll call our field maintenance man this week. I'll send out emails notifying all members that we will be open the Victoria Day weekned.
