Title: Warwing Kits - Pick-up Wednesday Evening at Build Class
Post by: bweaver on September 26, 2019, 09:50:24 AM
George and Mark have indicated they are interested in obtaining a Warwing kit.  If I build a couple, I might as well build a lot.

I foresee building a limited supply of likely 24.

To be fair to those wishing to order one, you will get one.  If you wish to order two, there is no guarantee of getting the second one, should 24 people want 1 each. (So feel free to order a maximum of two, but there is no promises.)

The blue foam board has gone up by $2 a sheet, so it is likely other materials have as well except for the orange crate ply and triangle stock. (Those are always constant).  Costs per kit will be based on the total costs of materials divided by the number of kits manufactured.

Place your orders NOW! (DEADLINE ENDED OCTOBER 31ST - ONLY TWO LEFT)

I will keep track here of those ordering a kit by listing their names and the number of kits desired.

The countdown begins  (THE COUNTDOWN IS OVER)

1 George (one of two)
2 Mark
3 Stephen
4 Eric
5 Carlos
6 Vadim (wishes one for Victoria)
7 Martin
8 Cadez (wishes one for Sophia)
9 George (two of two)
10 Vadim (Victoria's kit)
11 Greg (Sophia's kit)
12 Guy O'Riley
12 Gil
13 Bruce
14 Bruce
15 spare (available)
16 spare (available)

You're out of luck!

@Georgetsigaridis it is your lucky day!!!

I was at the field yesterday morning flying with a few of the morning crew when Ken joined us.  Unfortunately for Ken he lost sight of his plane in bright sun and piled it in. While he reduced its size before placing it in the car, I thought I would ask him if I could purchase what was left?  I told him what it was for.  He removed his receiver and gave me all the rest of parts with his usual smile.  Thanks Ken.  Sorry for you loss,  :'( but now I have a new target in the works.  ;D

So to make a long story short George, you now have a motor, esc and servos to compliment your Warwing kit, thanks to Ken.

By the way for those of you who haven't ordered your kit, the countdown is on.

(Seeing as there hasn't been as much demand this year, those that wish two kits will get two.  The list above will be adjusted accordingly and the number of kits remaining is fewer.)

RE: Could you please advise how I can hide it pending building season...

@GuyOReilly, you will easily be able to disguise it as blue insulation foam board pieces, waiting for you to do some insulating aircraft building at sometime in the future.  She will never know...  :-X

Your order has been noted.

Only 12 kits and 10 days left to order.

I'll take one.  Please deliver to my 2019 field representative: Carlos.

Given how real life stole my hobby time this summer, it's most likely Carlos will also have to build it for me and act as my Proxy Pilot  :(

6 hours remaining...

Also if you need a warwing motor and esc, I would recommend the following inexpensive components.

https://www.banggood.com/Racerstar-BR3536-950KV-2-4S-Brushless-Motor-For-FPV-RC-Airplane-Model-p-1384217.html?currency=USD&utm_source=criteo&utm_medium=cpc_brand&utm_content=all&utm_campaign=toys-and-hobbies-am-en&cur_warehouse=CN

I would also suggest purchasing the least expensive standard size servos (two) and any functioning receiver.

Thanks Bruce.

I had a look at the servos, and not all seem to come with a servo horn
I believe we will also need control horns, and push rods.
If anyone would like to consolidate into 1 order and save on shipping, let me know

The deadline of October 31st has passed.

Only 16 kits will be made this year.   I plan on having the kits available for the November building meeting.

ONLY 2 KITS REMAIN AVAILABLE.  :) :) :) :) :)
Title: Re: Warwing Kits - Deadline met
Post by: bweaver on November 01, 2019, 11:37:25 AM
@msatin and others

The warwing kit comes with the following:

- three 1/2 inch blue foam board fuselage and wing pieces (cut and ready for gluing together)
- the wing is prefabricated (one piece) and reinforced with fibreglass tape as necessary
- elevons are pre-installed with double sided medical taped hinges
- a 2 inch by 2 inch 1/8 quality plywood motor mount
- sufficient velcro for securing your battery to the aircraft
- plywood pieces for servo screw mounts (should you desire this method of securing servos)
- control horns for elevons
- zip ties for securing your ESC and combat ribbon
- fuselage reinforcing plywood (Moroccan quality only)
- 4 pieces of triangular stock for firewall mounting/securing to aircraft  (Moroccan quality only)

To complete the Warwing you will require:
•   5 minute or 15-minute epoxy,  (if 15 minute epoxy is selected, you need more patience) – paraphernalia for mixing and applying epoxy (waxed paper or something similar to prevent glue getting on tables)
•  hobby knife for fine trimming of foam
•   electric motor and ESC, mounting screws, nuts and bolts, blind nuts – your choice,
(examples of electric motor include - Rimfire .10, Turnigy G10, alternatively any brushless motor and ESC from a foamy aircraft, such as a Parkzone, Eflite, Durafly, FMS, or similar 1100 to 1200 mm wingspan aircraft)
•   2 servos and mounting screws or alternatively glue the servos to the wing if preferred
•   2 pushrods and linkages for servo to elevon connections.
•   receiver and 2 sided tape for securing same
•   flight battery is necessary for finding balance point and battery placement (typically 3 cell 1800 to 2200 mah is used)
•   you also may require servo extensions.

The Banggood motor and esc costs and delivery fees a nominal.  Order from the Canadian option and you get a better price.

If you have any reliable servos, they will likely due.  If you wish to purchase inexpensive standard servos, pushrods, etc.  I would suggest you contact your local hobby shop. http://www.greathobbies.com/productinfo/?prod_id=HITHS311S&ref=similarprodside

Maybe someone has spare servos and pushrods they wish to give away?

The kits are now being made.  I went to Lowes yesterday and bought the 1/2 inch blue foam 2' X 8' boards.

Photo 1 - Nice new blue foooooooaaaaaaaam boards!

Photo 2 - Warwing templates taken out of storage and tools organized for the initial preparation of the kits, involving drawing pieces on foam boards and then cutting.

Photo 3 & 4 Using the templates I draw them out on the foam boards.  Note from experience the layout arrangement I use on the foam boards.  This arrangement gets the most kits with limited waste and minimizes the number of cuts necessary to make each piece.

Photo 5 - I use a steel level with a good 90 degree straight edge to make a good straight cut.  I periodically sharpen the knife blade with the stone.

Photo 6 - Major cuts completed for the main wings, wing front portions and top of fuselages.

The fine cutting of the fuselage notches and corresponding wing notches will follow on another day.   That's it for the day...  ;)

Title: Re: Warwing Kits How to make a retired man happy? BUY AND BUILD ONE OF HIS TARGETS
Post by: bweaver on November 17, 2019, 10:15:44 AM
The project continues...

The elevons were cut out, shaped and installed with plastic medical tape on both sides of the hinged surfaces.

Fiberglass tape was applied to both sides of the wings to reduce flex and increase the performance.  ::) (Everyone knows this is BS because a warwings performance doesn't need improvement.)

The front portion of the wings were epoxied to the rear portion of the wings.  Wing alignment was achieved with technologically enhanced concrete bricks and a smart table.   Perfect, just perfect.

Fuselage notches have been meticulously cut out and will be precisely aligned with each wing's corresponding cut out notches for true fuselage/wing alignment purposes. (Anybody want to buy a bridge?)

Next steps:
- cut triangular motor mount stock,
- cut ply firewalls
- cut, shape and drill plywood control horns,
- cut plywood fuselage reinforcements
- cut unnecessary plywood servo attachment pieces (you can through them out if you don't use them or save them for some other project)
- cut lengths of valcro for battery attachment purposes
- zip ties (most essential component of a warwing.  These are used to attach the streamer to plane)
- bag and tag all loose pieces and prepare and include written instructions for those who desire or need them to complete their warwing.

The kits will be completed and available for pick and building at the Wednesday evening build session.
For those who have ordered, bring your $10 and we can make a trade. (quid pro quo)

@bweaver
Hello Bruce;
You mentioned that adding lamination increases resistance and durability.
I looked at Staples for the material:
1- It is expensive (IMHO).
2- Is there a better or cheaper source for this material?
3- It comes in 2 types: Flexible and Medium
a) Which one is preferable?
b) Do you know if there a HARD version?
c) Which version did you use?
d) Should any paint be applied prior to the the lamination process or can it be done after?
4- You added holes to your model - any significant weight reduction?
Thank you for your assistance.
Guy

I wouldn't spend a lot on it.  Vic has roles of it and sells it, but he is away for the winter.  I would suggest holding out til returns.  http://temac.ca/smf/index.php/topic,5813.msg38129.html#msg38129 .

The lightening holes don't make much of a difference.  Looks cool.

I dollar store painted mine before applying it.

Here is link to the laminated warwing I have made.  http://temac.ca/smf/index.php/topic,6695.msg43997.html#msg43997

Good luck with it.  Don't hesitate to inquire further if I can be of assistance.

Guy,

I think the front part of your workbench is really interesting... the front angled piece.  Is there a reason for it?  How does it help?  Thanks, David

N.B. Nice Warwing.

@davidk The workbench is from a counter that needed replacement.  Instead of throwing it out, I made a workbench.  The slanted part is because the counter has an angle.  I use it to place the important stickers, including a measuring tape from Ikea.  I plan on adding a strip at he bottom to hold pens, Exacto knives, etc.

Wonderful.  If you think you are having a break now, wait for the excitement you will get when you fly it.

PS (Don't take too much foam off by rounding the the edges. It attracts prop strikes.)   ::)

@bweaver Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!
Kindly note that I used to fly combat at the Toronto Club a few years back.... spent more time building and repairing than flying.  So I do not plan on combat again.  I love the design and the ease of construction of the Warwing. Looking forward to a maiden in the new year.  See you at the field and safe landings!

Do what I do.  Launch, fly smack into the middle of the melee... and then run away.

Here I'm thinking your bench is shaped like that to help with dihedral, or some other aerodynamic requirement... that it was painstakingly crafted to have just the right angle.  Turns out it was a counter put to good use. :)

I finally maiden('d?) my warwing from last year! On Jan 1 no less, at 11:05 am!

Sad I missed ya'll, BUT since the field was empty I decided it was a good idea to maiden the warwing myself!

I channeled my inner Frank and gave it just enough... I immediately realized it was tail heavy but somehow landed without breaking anything.

Second flight was perfect, little roll trim and it was amazing!

Goes to show you if I can maiden this thing, it's a great flying plane!

It is latex and easy to clean (except on clothes...)
I do not plan on doing combat, just going to fly it for fun.

How heavy should the plane be? @Frank v B @bweaver
Title: Re: Warwing Kits - Pick-up Wednesday Evening at Build Class
Post by: bweaver on January 07, 2020, 06:14:04 PM
@GuyOReilly

The warwing you have built looks fantastic.  It is too bad that you have a fatalistic attitude towards flying it in combat.  As a result of you having this attitude, I am going to punish you by giving you another Warwing Kit.  (This sanity about Warwings and fear of combat has to stop!)

Next points.

(1) Don't worry about waiting to fly it in good weather.  Please understand that it is a Warwing... it can fly in any weather and fly well, unless of course it is David's Warwing, flown only by David.

(2) Don't worry about added weight.  It's a Warwing for crying out loud.  It flies better with a little more weight on it. Note: You can simply add weight by adding glue and reinforcing or by replacing pieces.  You can even repaint it where and when necessary.

(3) With respect to your inquiry about how much it should weigh?  It's a Warwing... it doesn't matter how much it weighs and it is not polite to ask. If it is not heavy enough for you, add a drag inducing streamer to the tail.  It won't slow it down, but does attract attention.

(4) It is advisable to paint the bottom of the Warwing with a different colour than that of the top surface.  This will allow you to identify your Warwing from others in the sky regardless of its flight attitude in the sky.

(5) Regarding this work thing you were referring to... You need a stress reliever.  Go fly your Warwing, with utter abandon.  ::)

(6) Further, why are you asking @Frank v B questions about a Warwing?  Frank has had difficulty building the Warwing kit he has... some excuse about not having enough room for it.  Frankly (pun intended) I think he is too busy putting sticks together to ever start building his Warwing Kit.  (It is not complicated enough for him.)  ;)

Them's fighting words:
1) You know a WarWing is waayyy too difficult for me.
2) Just for that my next build blog is "how to make a badass Warwing".  It will be custom.  It will be mean.  I'm going to take flying lessons from Glenn. ;) :D

@Frank v B

It's about time!  Building a 'badass Warwing' is only one step...

Come to think of it, why would you ask Glenn ( @electroflyer ) how to fly a Warwing? Anybody can fly a Warwing and he is a prime example.

He won't divulge any secrets.

The challenge is ON!

I just received a personal message indicating that my last post may offend Glenn.

Glenn ( @electroflyer ), trust me.  I would never inadvertently offend you by inappropriately commenting on your Warwing flying abilities or lack thereof.

What I really meant by my last post was suggesting to Frank that he should "never mistake luck for skill".   I think Frank always reminds us to "Never trade luck for skill".  Same thing.

Sorry Glenn  :-X
Title: Re: Warwing Kits - Pick-up Wednesday Evening at Build Class
Post by: davidk on January 07, 2020, 09:15:08 PM
Can't imagine that would offend Glenn  :)  He'd probably be one of the first to agree... and we all know all this stuff is all in good fun.  Have to say... he is damn good in a Warwing challenge.

No worries, Bruce.  Even if he was, it would only be evident in a Warwing challenge... so that would be cool.

@GuyOReilly , floats actually add a nice balance, ballast, to a Warwing... and improve my Warwing flying considerably.  Flying a Warwing off the snow is a hoot... and I can't imagine how much fun it will be on that liquid type snow.

@bweaver thank you for your comments and advice.
I will consider combat once I fly it a few times.
Yes,  it is simple to build and instructions are clear.
Perhaps even @Frank v B could attempt constructing one, unless..... he is afraid of crossing that line...
I might go to Lowes next month and buy a 4X8 of blue foam... more insulation in the basement needed  ;)
I will consider floats as mentioned, it will add to stability with weight below the wing.
As concern with weight does not seem to be an issue, I will add armement...
See you guys tomorrow.

I added a center float, and rudder, should be good for snow. ;)
As for armement, I added a bomb drop set-up, look at the video. :D

Guy, you have to make that video Public or Unlisted.  Right now it's Private.
Change it 'cause I wanna see your WarWing!

Fantastic, Guy... can't wait to see it fly.  I take it that it's not going to be entered in any combat  ;)

What's the "float" made of.  Seems more like a ski.  Pretty cool.

And the "pom pom bomb" drop is excellent.

Will it fly off water?

@davidk  No combat for that one... I will build another with the same colour scheme for combat.
The float is made of foam, sheeted with 1/16 balsa and covered in Monokote.
I made that float some 12-15 years ago, but only found a use for it now.
This should fly off water....  :o
It is HEAVY!!! 2pound 4 ounces.  :-X
