Title: 2014 Flight instruction
Post by: thehaze on April 21, 2014, 11:07:33 PM
We're baaaaaackkkkk!!!!!!!

It's what you've been all waiting for!! Flight training!

The 2014 edition of the TEMAC flight training program starts Wednesday May 7th @6:00pm. And will take place every Wednesday after that until Labour day. Weather permitting of course. I'll post to this thread on Tuesday night or Wednesday mornings to confirm whether we are a go or not.

Anyone is welcome to participate. However, for pilots without wings, instruction is mandatory.  Pilots entering the program are encouraged to read the sticky topics in the instruction forum for information on models, equipment, etc. Please note that a buddy box system is required for all new pilots. Minimally, you will need a trainer cord, however a 2nd controller (aka a buddy box may be required). Please check with me if your radio system is compatible with the ones commonly used at the club.

Any questions please ask. See you at the field!

Mike

Yay Mike!  Will you be including lessons on how to "back taxi " down the driveway?!!!  ;D

Definitely a key part of the spring training curriculum!!

Would it count as "instruction" if someone with their wings (me) were to come and fly scary planes on buddy box? - Giving people without their wings priority.

Imran

We welcome that kind of thing!!

The instruction isn't just for new pilots, it's for anyone. People without wings may be given priority but the instruction program also covers people wanting to improve skills in other areas with an instructor.

You may need to find an instructor experienced enough and brave enough to fly your scary plane!

Lol

Simon is wise. He said it all.

So how scary is this scary model?

I have a Dx6i, is this radio compatible with the instructor's radio?

Hi Mike, I'm new to the club however I do have my wings from way back (Humber Valley 1990).  I understand I need to have a flight check with instructor, is this also done on Wednesdays and if so are there any other days/nights available?

P.S. Fantastic job on the new runway everyone.  It was nice to see and meet many of the members out lending a hand. The runway looks great!  I thought I would have a tough time lining up for landings however after a few passes.. no problem. Guess that makes me officially flight #3.

Thanks
Peter

So far, it looks like we have a 60% chance of rain tonight, so there is a high chance that training will be cancelled today.  I know, I know - sorry!

I will review the weather and post an update on here at lunch time, when we see how much rain has rolled in.

As much as people want to fly, it's really miserable standing in a field with wind and rain coming at you.  :'(

No worries i do have a buddy cable but look at picking one up just in case i can't make it out for a training night.

As Simon said watch the forum/forecast for updates on tonight's training.

OK, so the weather forecast is marginally better now than it was this morning, but still with a 40% chance of showers.

As it stands now, at 1:45pm, I do intend to go.  So we can say training is going ahead, however......

All students coming to training tonight must do so in the full knowledge that if it rains, we will not be able to fly during the showers.  So there is a chance you may not fly.

Also, it looks like it will be fairly windy from the East - this will be a cross wind for our field, and quite strong wind for models.  So the smaller (<40" wingspan) and lighter models (like the SuperCub or Art-Tech Cessna) may not be able to fly.

Let's hope we get some flying in!  :)

What a great evening.

I got there early and was soon joined by Simon. We had a few flights before training started, but the highlight was when we both took off from the new runway at the same time with ultra-micro jets. That was fun, and we did it again at the end of the evening. We are now taking off and landing with approx. 1/2" wheels!

Some new flyers showed up. New flyers included Daniel, Denver, Andy, Gill and Oscar, and also John who is almost ready to earn his wings, and Avri who was testing some new models. Ed and Greg and Greg also helped out quite a bit. Despite the heavy winds, everyone got to do some flying.

This was my first time flying off the new runway, and it is really fun. There is still plenty of grass beyond the runway to land on, for those who prefer landing on grass.

I flew 4 different jets off the runway, and I'm really impressed.

I agree, it was a fabulous evening! Welcome and congrats to all new 2014 students who flew last night.

We did a great repair on Denver & Daniels Supercub and radio - that was fun! Gill flew his apprentice on a Buddy box with Michael. Oscar flew great and let me have a go with the super-whizzy DX9 (I need one of them!!!) Avri and John were getting some circuit and landing practice in, and poor old Kevin didn't fly due to radio issues. It was also great to meet Andy who had a go with my 2m glider.

Everyone else was getting runway practice in - it's definitely going to make everyone's flying better and open up more models for everyone.

Like Michael said, my highlight was flying our Ultra Micro EDFs together with 1/2" wheels of the new runway. I even did a touch 'n' go!

Looking forward to next week!

agreed the DX9 is super cool... no buddy cords and she talks in a British accent ... (oh behave  ;D )
and the runway was great for taking off from. I still need my first landing since Oscar was able to pull it off.

I got a bit if flying in before the rain, my best flight with my Hangar 9 Mustang which I trimmed out for this weekend's funfly.

Once the rain stopped I helped Andy, Rob and Don.
It was Andy's first time flying and he did great, thanks to time he had spent on a simulator. Rob did fine, taking off, flying and landing, and then doing even better with another instructor later. I flew 3 times with Don, and his skill improved with each flight.

The flying conditions after the rain were great; calm and only slightly cool.

I did have a couple more flights with some jets, but then Robert and I flew our old-fashioned 3-channel gliders for some relaxing fun.

It starts off raining but everyone waited til it's clear.

The wait is all worth it!!!

Clear sky with almost no wind.  With Greg help, I flew my Apprentice and completed all 3 batteries.  (With no wind tonight, those 3200mah flies over 15 minutes with 1/2 throttle); Even maiden my HK FlyBeam (thanks again Greg and Mike).

I even flew my Phantom Quadcopter.

What a terrific student night!

I too had a wonderful evening at the field.  I had given up when the rains came early in the evening and didn't even charge batteries to prepare.   ON a hope that it would be ok I charged some packs and headed out.

What a great training evening!  Im sorry I admit I didn't help anyone else but I did get to take my daughter for two very calm and relaxing flights in practically zero wind.  The plane flew very stable and was a big boost to her confidence.  I witnessed some other great flying from several students and seasoned pros out enjoying the conditions!

Great time guys!  If you missed it you missed a good one

Hi @bfeist:

I have absolutely no idea what came over me.  I mean, with approximately 1,025,109.8 words in the English language as of January 1, 2014, there is so much that can be said and so much artful prose available for saying it, and short of a bandwidth limitation or discretionary filter (of which I have neither), or the prospect of annoying an air traffic controller (who can really make your life miserable) with excessive verbosity, why on earth - or in the air even - would one opt for succinct shorthand.

Especially when all the world's a stage!   ;D

My apologies for such a terse and insensitive digest of the forecast.

I will endeavour to provide more fulsome meterological outlooks in the future.

Humbly yours,

Andy

Thank you Mike and Greg for allowing me to begin flying solo tonight.  It's a step closer to get my wing.   ;D

I put on a Gopro tonight while flying the HK Flybeam.  It will be awesome if the sky is totally dark.  (BTW, Thanks Greg for helping me tuning the plane.  It flies much better now)

Well done to all the students.  Despite being cold (Andy - what happened to your forecast  ??? ) I had a great time.

I really enjoyed helping John Preston work on his landing technique - within a few minutes he was doing approaches like never before!  ;)  Also it was great to get Kevin in the air (but I would really think about a Spektrum radio, Kevin - try RCCanada perhaps for a second-hand one?) and then Eddie showed what he can do with a fixed wing plane - we look forward to you becoming a member now Eddie.  :)

Also, it was good to re-re-re-re-re-maiden my Nooner after another crash (and wing brace & firewall removal  :-\ )

And a certain lady had her first flight last night...........someone seemed quite chuffed!  :)

Yes another fun night at TEMAC.

There was a lot of great flying by the students. Of note was Oscar completing his first solo flight with his Apprentice.

Thanks to all those who helped with instruction.

Until next week,

Another Wednesday is upon us.

Training is scheduled for 6:30pm. The forecast is predicting that the winds might be on the high side. Which will impact flying. Depending on your model and level of experience you might be grounded until the winds calm (usually at the end of the evening).

I won't be there tonight, but there will be a number of instructors there and ready to help you.

Have fun! Fly safe!

@thehaze oh man, I was planning to bring my Extra 300 today... I think the wind won't be favorable this afternoon anyways... so I think I'l bring my Sensei ....

Any other instructors available this afternoon?

I was planning to go, but have just seen the wind forecast....

12-13 knots, gusting 15 for this evening.  That's 20km/h gusting 28km/h.  :o

It is an hours drive to TEMAC for me in the evening, so I am just contacting other instructors to get their input on whether training is viable.

It's certainly too windy for a Hobby Zone Super Cub for example, not sure about an Apprentice.  It will make flying a challenge, that's for sure.

Title: Re: 2014 Flight instruction
Post by: Oscar on June 04, 2014, 02:51:20 PM
I wonder how well the Apprentice can handle the 20km/h wind.

That might be on the upper end of what the Apprentice can handle.

Well, training did take place this evening, and even though it was quite cool and windy, we all had a pretty good time.

I worked with Daniel and with Ed, both who did some pretty good flying, and got some good experience flying in the wind.
Daniel was doing some good takeoffs.

Rob also did well (with Greg) and I saw him do a nice landing.

At one point, I recall seeing 4 Apprentices in the air at the same time!

Well, believe it or not, despite the rainy and windy forecast, the grass was cut, the sun came out, the temperature warmed up, and the wind was light and steady.

Brian Gillian, our grass cutter, grabbed my transmitter from me, and flew and landed his first flight ever with a jet.

Instruction started at 6:30, and Jack and I helped Rob, Oscar, Denver, Daniel, Andy, David, Pedro and Julien get their planes in the air.

All flew nicely. Rob and Andy have really improved.

Daniel flew his new Apprentice really well, but unfortunately, it ended its second flight up in a tree. We will get it down.  ;D

Greg and Greg showed up a little while later and helped out.

Greg C flew his old GWS Messerschmidt twin ducted fan, 3 times, taking of and landing smoothly, thanks to our new runway.

Ken Coleman helped David out with his Formosa, and his persistence and stubbornness paid off and the plane finally got a good flight.
A bigger motor will make a big difference next time.

Ed was there with his daughter, entertaining us flying several models. Ed then spent a half-hour valiantly trying to get the plane out of the tree, but without success.
Efforts are ongoing.

Anyway, a pleasant evening.

:)

Thanks Oscar for the video, looks great!  Need to work on landing a bit closer to the end, but she floats pretty good.   The runway is perfect, for all of you that remember, I had this plane for over 4 years (Thanks John P).  The issue was that it was made of EPS foam and breaks up instantly if there is any impact to the fuse.  I had a good flight a few years ago and the planes exploded on a perfect landing.   At one of the fun flies it didn't even take off from the grass!  Now with the runway, this was the perfect time to try it again! It flew great and landings were so much fun!  I don't think I flew that much in one night before!

Well, it was a good night and bad night for me.....

I'm pleased that I got my Slipstream back in the air, and it seemed to fly just fine. Now with added cooling!  ;)

Sadly, I tried to tame the Champ again and failed.  It ended up in a tree - wonder if that's a training night trend? Damage is not too bad and I may try the chewing gum and wire technique that Ed mentions, to fix it.  ;D

Also some great flights with Andy once he had the tail glued on and the SAFE switch in the correct position.

Post by: Oscar on June 26, 2014, 11:26:25 AM
The rain stopped after 6p and this begins the student night.  With Greg help, I maiden my Artizan.  This plane is perfect for aerobatics learning.  I put on the SAFE r/x (Thanks for Robert for the Apprentice R/X) to the Artizan and programmed the BIND switch as 'PANIC' button (Mike called it 'Oh CRAP' button).  Put on the intermediate mode while flying around and change to Advance mode for aerobatics.  The moment I lost the orientation, I pressed the bind button and it levels out. (even you are in Advanced mode)

I did my first 'LOOP' that night.   ;D

Can't wait for the next student night.

Side note: - After I landed, I throttle too much while taxiing.  It hit on Bill's Polaris EDF plane and damaged his plane.  I felt so bad.  It can be avoid if I just walked to the field and pick up the plane.  I am terrible sorry, Bill.  Lesson learned.

Winds be damned.  Three students showed up and three flew.  Justin and Malcolm had two flights each.  The take-offs and landings were at zero ground speed!!  A weird experience.  Winds were a very gusty 30 km/h.
The students did well.  Congrats to them for flying in very difficult conditions.  Every flight counted as three in experience towards their solos.

It went well.

It's a bigger size foam model, with retracts.

Take off and trimming were OK, flight was smoother and smoother with each pass, and the landing was great, one wheel first and then the other, and no nose over.

Fun to watch!

lol! you know... a landing where your plane is in one piece, for sure is a good landing!   8)

Thanks @Michael for the tips on how to fly this little monster.... I've found that the plane is pretty powerful...   The landing wasn't thaaat great.... we had a pretty strong south wind... which made it even more difficult... but everyrhing went well...

I will probably get some extra decals from Callie to make it even more real....

We all good for today, looks nice outside?  I am still dealing with my gout attack from the weekend, so I will just be hobbling around.  ::)
