Building / Construction / Turbo Timber EVO Repair
Last post by davidk - April 13, 2026, 08:47:45 PM
Had a good landing the other day... and then the wind decided it wasn't done... picked up the Timber about 3 feet and set her down... hard.

She broke an aluminum pin in the landing gear... $30 for a set of stuff including 2 pins.

So I photographed the good pin and created an STL file for printing... cost .08 cents.  I printed it in PETG Carbon Fiber... so... maybe it'll last a flight or 2.

When it breaks again, I'll take a 4mm steel rod and cut a 65mm length.  Then I'll try a print in place to surround the piece with a CF jacket.  She's all back together ready for another bone-headed landing.

11.5 years... and... in a sense... why care what anyone else thinks??  Why would you care if anyone else is interested in you finishing a plane more than 6 years since your last post and almost 12 years since your first.  The thing is... that plane is amazingly still alive!!!

So... finish it.  And don't list all the crap you still need to do... that's just a death knoll for the process.  Seeing a long list just makes you go get a sandwich.  Put it on the bench and starting building... that's all you need to do.  Just the one next thing.  Only one.  Not 37 (probably more like 137), just one... just the next one.  That's it.

I'll follow along... why not?  It's not going to make or break my life, but it will be interesting.  Same for you.

Onto the bench... and do just the next thing.  Off you go.

I'M BACK!  ;D So after about ELEVEN YEARS, I've finally found the time to get back into the hobby and what better place to start than where I left off eleven years ago ... finishing the Solent!

However since it's quite a bit of effort to document a build, I would like to get a feel for if there's still enough interest in this build for me to continue posting the final stages of it here.

Let me know,

Thanks!

Colin.

P.S. There's still much to be done.  See below. ::)

The following 38 items are left to be done:

FUSELAGE:

1 - Rub down with ultra fine steel wool (or brillo pad depending) to create a satin to flat finish so that my panel lines will "bite".
2 - Panel lines will be applied
3 - Very subtle differential "distressing" will be applied to random panels.
4 - 23 additional lower fuse windows fabricated/installed. (into fuse cutouts like the original 12 I already have)
5 - Left side TAIL window fabricated/installed. (again into fuse cutout)
6 - Rubber window framing (indented inserts/seals) installed in all 36 windows.
7 - Bow air intake will be added.
8 - Bow hatch will be created
9 - Bow U bolt anchor will be fabricated and installed
10 - Wing to fuselage fairings
11 - Elevator to fuselage fairings
12 - Navigation dome
13 - Indented door frames
14 - Indented right side tail hatch
15 - Miscellaneous scale "bits". (like cabin radio antenna post, side air intake stalks etc etc)
16 - Rusted water line :)
17 - Scale decals
18 - Rivets (I expect these will run into the thousands)
19 - A BIG SURPRISE ONLY REVEALED IN PERSON! (possibly at a winter workshop/pilot's meeting) ;)

TAIL FEATHERS:

20 - Rub down with ultra fine steel wool (or brillo pad depending) to create a satin to flat finish.
21 - Panel lines will be applied
22 - Differential "distressing" will be applied to random panels.
23 - Non functional elevator trim tabs
24 - Non functional rudder trim tabs
25 - Scale Decals
26 - Rivets

WINGS:

27 - Rubbed down with ultra fine steel wool (or brillo pad depending) to create a satin to flat finish.
28 - Panel lines will be applied
29 - Differential "distressing" will be applied to random panels.
30 - Non functional cowl flaps
31 - Nacelle exhausts
32 - Top and bottom nacelle air intakes
33 - Tip float rigging
34 - Scale spinners (I've decided to redo these from sturdier material as opposed to the ones I had depicted in the pics so far)
35 - Counter rotating scale 4 blade props
36 - Scale decals
37 - Rivets

OVERALL:

38 - Clear coat entire plane clear to lock in panel lines.

The front gear doors have a fairly simply mechanism for closing.  It's a bit tedious but I put it in anyway.  I'd need a smaller wheel for the doors to close fully but this is already a downsize from my first choice... so... no smaller and I'll live with it.

General Discussion / Re: Huge RC
Last post by BrunoS - April 09, 2026, 07:20:49 AM
Ramy RC (don't know his full name) has been building ever larger electric RC airplanes for Tyler Perry at TP's estate near Atlanta GA. Ramy RC has a YouTube channel (youtube.com/@ramyrc) that shows how he designs and builds these monster RC airplanes and Tyler Perry doing the maiden flights from the 1000 ft runway on TP's estate. Interestingly their RC of choice is Jeti because of the extensive telemetry and programming features it provides. You can hear the transmitter call out the airspeed every few seconds during a flight video. It also calls out the remaining flight time based on the main battery voltage telemetry.
