Title: RC sailing- these won't fly but we will have RC fun
Post by: Frank v B on October 18, 2023, 10:02:49 PM
At least 4 of us at Temac are RC sailors.  We plan to meet soon at a pond near Kennedy Road and Hiway 7.
The members include Guy O'Reilly, Rob Dickinson, BJ Roberts and me.
The trash talking has begun.  Guy figures he is faster than me while BJ says we will both be looking at his stern.

We will report on the fun before the water goes hard.

First meeting at TOOGOOD Pond this coming Monday October 23 at 2:30 pm.

Frank

ps: my boat was bought from the Ken Coleman estate.  25" long.

Here are the directions to Toogood pond.

From "Blackbeard" O'Reilly's e-mail to me:
Main Street Unionville, one light west of Kennedy on Highway 7.
There is a "launching pad" being stairs leading to the water right next to the restaurant/washrooms/ cabin.  After launch, there is a passerelle which provides a great view of the lake/pond and of the entire regatta area.

Hey Guy
What's that red boat in the back?

Hello Michael;
It is a scratch-built model.  I am having some trouble with overheating at this time.
Here is a link to the full-sized plans I scaled down.  The formers were all mapped using AutoCAD, but I no longer have the software or the files.

Also, attached is a "better" picture showing the crew.
Will we see you on Monday?
Guy

On our second pond visit I will have a 36" sailboat ready for TEMAC visitors to try.  Richard Budney and Paul Gray are joining us this Monday.
It needs new rigging.  It is a 36" restricted design pond yacht converted to RC.  Someone had a mould for it and made a hull when I was in grade 7 in 1966.

The rigging is rusty, some turnbuckles are missing and the mast step is broken.  Installed a new sail servo (180 degree).  A few evenings of work and it will be ready.
Note the rudder in the photo.  The old rudder depth was the same as the bottom of the skeg.  It would come out of the water on windy days.  Changed it to a spade rudder so it would dig in when heeled over.  It works well.  A little large but it does the job.

Frank

ps: Racing sailors will note the resemblance of the hull shape to Red Jacket by C&C, launched in 1966.

I Will have 2 sailboats, as I can sail only one at the time, another "visitor" can use it!

Two things -
1) This is awesome.
2) Don't have too much fun at that pond, or the fun police will find out and cause their usual trouble.

The first meeting of the Temac Horizontal 2D Aqua Flyers was great fun.  Beautiful day, gorgeous sunshine.  No wind.  When we want some wind we can't even buy it!
In attendance and sailing:
- Captain Glenn Bligh
- Captain Blackbeard Dickinson
- Captain Crunch van Beurden
- Captain Jean Luc Picard-O'Reilly
- Captain Paul Nelson-Gray
- Captain Gerry Hook

In attendance for immoral support:
- Paul Scuse, his wife and dog.
- Mark Satin.  He came down from Rogo Field.
- Richard Budney

Frank

ps: Pat MacK- the fun police did to stop us!  They would have joined us.

This is a LOOONNNGGG video 8 minutes 39.
Here is a quick video of the action and of the Peanut Gallery!

The camera was mounted on the top of the mast and the stays and rigging got in the way.
