Title: Introducing a new forum feature
Post by: bfeist on May 11, 2014, 12:51:42 PM
How many times have you written a post hoping that a specific person sees it? Now you can call their attention to it by mentioning them in the post.

For example, if I would like to call Rob Pike's attention to this post I type the "@" symbol, followed by piker (Rob Pike's membername). The forum will autocomplete as you type after typing "@" to help you find a membername in the system. It only works with membernames, not real names or anything else.

Hey @piker , check out this post!

Now you can ask specific people questions without having to send them a direct message, and let everyone else see the response.
When you're mentioned, it will show up as a count next to the Profile topnav item, just like when you get a direct message. If you would like to receive an email to let you know someone mentioned you, click Profile -> Mentions, then check the "E-Mail Mention Notifications" box on the right.

Give it a try.

Wow! That sounds awesome Ben. Thanks!

Now I just need to learn people's username. Maybe @papa can help?

Hmm, that mention didn't work Simon, did you click the "papa" that came up after you typed "@"?

This is a test @bfeist
No auto fill appeared on android mobile or is this feature dedicated to full site use only?

Hmm. Doesn't seem great.
Type @bf  then pause and wait. You should see a little popup that says "bfeist" come up. Click it and then keep typing.

Is @bf or "@bf" or "bfiest" working?

Not for me, on laptop or mobile.  Sorry!

Post by: bfeist on May 12, 2014, 10:51:39 AM
HA! Ok, I'm an idiot. It was turned off for non-administrators, so it only worked for me.
NOW try it.

Do a shift-refresh of you browser, if that doesn't work log out and log back in again. I just tested it with a test user account at all access levels and it worked.

Hmm, didn't think about mobile. Looks like the mention worked anyway
Title: Re: Introducing a new forum feature

Heads up that I turned on email notifications by default for all users. Now when you mention someone, they get an email letting them know with a link back to the post where they were mentioned. This should help us with overall club engagement, and will encourage people to participate who don't normally spend all day every day reading every message (ahem, @Ededge2002 )

If you'd like to not receive mention notifications, go to Profile -> Mentions and uncheck the box on the right.

Checking to see how quickly @Ededge2002 reacts, to see if he is working today (no pop-up again Ben.)
Title: Re: Introducing a new forum feature
Post by: bfeist on May 12, 2014, 12:17:14 PM
It looks like just using @username alone is enough. No popup required. That was a mistake on my part before I figured out that it wasn't enabled for regular users.

@bfeist you are the greatest.  Thank you.

Is this now like annoying toy, with sound and lights, on Christmas day?
Title: Re: Introducing a new forum feature
Post by: Papa on May 12, 2014, 12:49:15 PM
Now it's working @bfeist and @sihinch and @Ededge2002 and @piker
But it does not work if you start a line with it. It has to be in a sentence.

Sadly, I think I may be the victim of an outdated browser on my work PC. Still didn't work.

And it was a model spitfire that inspire me to fly!

Enjoy the images all you lucky users!
