Title: Frenchman's Bay Float Fly - Saturday, May 31 at 4:30!
Post by: piker on May 28, 2014, 02:03:47 PM
The weather forecast for Saturday evening looks ideal for some fantastic float flying at Frenchman's Bay!

I'll be there with the boat, my planes, and plenty of batteries charged and ready for flying.

I hope all you float flyers can make it out for the evening.

Bring your planes, a chair, the wife and kids... even Mum-in-Law, for a pleasant evening by the Bay.

It'll be great!

If for some reason the weather looks questionable and you want to confirm before you head out, call or text me at 416-828-8722

Here's the usual link to the Bay:

There is the Niagara spring warm up float fly also happening Saturday.
If you live west of Toronto.
Unfortunately I can't make this one.
For more info.

That's an interesting float pond.  I wonder why it was dug that way.  It looks like it's made for rowing!

I can't make it to that float fly this weekend, but I'll plan for next year.

Thanks for the heads up, Chris.

Oh, I see now.  It's a Sea-doo dealership.  Cool!

My understanding is the dealership has closed up.  The major length is N - S and the pilots are located on the east side. Right across from where that first section was dug west. It is nice as there are no trees at all.  Parking is interesting.
Not to worry about missing one as the Niagara Club holds three float flies a year at the location.  The one in the summer is the big one with many pilots attending.
I attended two of them last year.  Wind was nothing to a little breeze out of the north.  Not really sure what a wind out of the west or east would be like there.

So,  I'm a little concerned about the weather we're going to have for Saturday's Float Fly at Frenchman's Bay...

I'm a little concerned that it's going to be SO AWESOME IT WILL BLOW OUR MINDS!!!

I think only those of us who are SERIOUS about having an AMAZING time float flying should show up.  It may be a bit too much fun for the rest.

You've been warned....

A perfect evening at Frenchman's Bay!  Watch for a Tickler from Jack, followed by a photo gallery.

In the meantime, here's a little Beaver lore.

What a blast last night.  I had my first seaplane take off.  It was until I lost my orientation (flies too far away) and end up stall and fell.  Lesson learn.  Thank you Rob to retrieve my plane.

I also brought my little boat out.  This is the first time I took it to the lake (voyage).  I think my boat can join Rob's rescue boat team.  ;D ;D

Here is the video I took.

I was frantically chopping up a tree in my backyard, on Sunday, before I had to hop on a plane to San Diego for some wind tunnel testing this past week, so I haven't had a chance to comment on last weeks Float Fly until now.

Well, as you may have seen in the photos, the weather was excellent!!!! and those who showed up had a great time until sunset.

Everyone was surprised to find calm air and smooth water when we arrived at the bay last week.  I was there at just after 4:30 and started to wonder if I had the correct night.   I got all my stuff unloaded then waited to see if anyone was going to show.  Eventually people did start arriving after 5:00 and we flew the rest of the evening.

It was great to see many of the regulars out, but we were missing many of the usual people.  Too bad, as it was a perfect evening!

It was very nice to have Andy out to take many wonderful pictures, and hopefully get the float flying bug, and it was nice to meet Mita, who is very nice and much too good for Andy  :P

We got to witness Ken Rawlin's test flight of his Navigator, that he showed at the last winter "Pilot's Meeting".  It flew beautifully, as expected.  I have a fondness for that plane as I have one too, that is awaiting refurbishing.  I built mine in '96 and flew the heck out of it.  The design is sleek and beautiful!

It was also cool that Oscar was able to make it out and perform his first water take-off and most of his first flight... but the landing was a bit rough   ;)   But, as is always the case when flying from water, the damage was virtually non existent and his plane will be ready again for next time.  And I was finally able to watch the above video's from Oscar's air boat.  Nice footage and funny commentary  ;D

So, we had a great evening at Frenchman's Bay. I just wish more of you had come out to enjoy it.

I'm in the arranging stages for our next float fly, on June 14th, at that private pond we flew at last year.  It looks like it's a go, so start getting your seaplanes ready!

Thank you Rob for organizing the event (and save my seaplane).  Despite the crash, I had a great time.  Watching others flying off the water during the sunset, it's already a reward.

Here is the last part of the video I recorded from last weekend event.

Another cool video, and a fast recovery  ;D

I was wondering why i was shaking my hand at the very end, then I remembered I was shaking the water out of that battery checker you had plugged in.  See?  Full service recovery  :)

These videos show what a beautiful evening it was.  Thanks for posting them, Oscar.
