Title: Flight Instruction
Post by: thehaze on May 21, 2013, 06:24:12 PM
Flight instruction is still scheduled for tomorrow, May 22.

However, there is a chance of thunder showers. In the event of rain or lightning, instruction will be cancelled. Should this occur, I will consult with the instruction team and attempt to provide an alternate date.

Check the local weather conditions before heading to the field tomorrow. If the weather is good for flying, we will start at 6pm

Mike

I charged a couple of packs and was prepped and ready to go. Then the clouds all piled up and it rained. Unfortunately it looks like it might be done up here in newmarket.

Yeah, the weather didn't turn out as forecast.  ???

I played a hunch and went to the field and low and behold. There were some students at the field. Imran, Imran, and Iliyan had some good flights with their models and had a lot of fun.

The parking area is very wet with all the recent rain, so be careful when driving in

Here's a picture of my HK EPP FPV after it made an unscheduled landing (aka crash) in the farmer's shoe sucking muddy field - looks like damage is only "minor" :) and hopefully it should be ready to fly again next Wed.... Radio control to the model was lost for reasons unknown (yet). It did not respond to control inputs from either mine or the instructor's radio.

Just to close the loop on last Wednesday's crash.  After rebuilding the frame and reconnecting all the electronics, I was not able to get the motor to respond to my throttle stick input until I reprogram the ESC for min/max throttle stick position. It appeared that the ESC program settings were  lost.

The ESC is installed inside the hull without ventilation so heat accumulation inside the hull may have caused the ESC to shut down. Since the RC receiver is power by the BEC from the ESC, thus control radio link was lost resulting in the crash. I'm 90% confident that was the cause of the crash.

To minimize this from happening again, I implemented the following:

1. Cut two holes in the hull to force ventilation over the ESC. Hopefully this will prevent over heating.

2. Install a separate BEC to power the RC receiver directly from the Lipo. So if the ESC fails again, I would loose the motor but I would still have control over the control surfaces and hopefully be able do a dead stick landing.

Here's a couple of pictures showing the forced ventilation 'system'. The hole at the front of the plane has the cup opening facing forward to ramp air into the hull, and the rear opening has the cup opening facing backwards to suck out the exhaust. The rear opening is located just above where the ESC is mounted.

Front opening (just above the wheel):

Frank. Nice repair. Most of us are starting to install desperate sbec units in the planes we love.

Nice work! Adding a separate bec is like having a parachute. You probably won't need it, but when the moment comes you'll be glad you do.

Title: Re: Flight Instruction
Post by: Bobmic on May 29, 2013, 06:20:24 PM
Without relation to the benefit of separate BEC overheating in a plane like is a bit strange. Are you close to the current limit of the ESC at full throttle with a fresh battery?
Also if the ESC cut the power due to over heating it shouldn't have required reprogramming the limits.
Maybe there is something wrong with the ESC?
Title: Re: Flight Instruction
Post by: Candu on May 29, 2013, 10:44:56 PM

The ESC is rated at 60A. It is possible I have a faulty ESC but there were no ESC incident after it flew a few of circuits this evening. The ESC and motor were too hot to the touch after landing. I haven't measure the actual full load current but I'll measure it in the shop when I have a chance.
Title: Re: Flight Instruction
Post by: Gregor77 on May 30, 2013, 06:34:20 AM
Frank. I think that the plane is over propped. It flies normal at 1/4 throttle and becomes a bear to handle over 1/2 to full. There was one or two times the esc or motor was slightly cutting out in flight. But I can't confirm without an amp draw test. But after flying it. Please go find a proper type of plane. You can't learn on this one. I had to change my under wear almost wear almost twice that night.
Title: Re: Flight Instruction
Post by: sihinch on May 30, 2013, 07:44:52 AM
Phew - so it wasn't just me.  I also struggled to control your plane, Frank, I'm afraid.  It's certainly not easy to fly, and cannot be classed as a trainer! Sorry!
Title: Re: Flight Instruction
Post by: Gregor77 on May 30, 2013, 08:11:37 AM
Frank, check the "Classifieds" and go find a trainer (Foam), 4 Channel (Apprentice, Sensei, etc)... Instructors will be more kean on teaching you how to fly on something that is not a flying demon!

If the motor and ESC are too hot to touch this is clearly a problem (this was after improving airflow over the ESC)?
First step will be to connect a watt meter and make sure you are within the motor and ESC spec. based on Greg's comments I am guessing you can easily prop it down - I don't know which prop you are using nor the weight of the model vs power but I am guessing that ~110 W/Lb should be enough for this plane. When you change props try to keep larger diameter over pitch as you don't need too much speed.
Although I have never flown this type of plane I tend to think that with proper setup it should be an easy flyer as it is used for FPV.

Thanks guys for all your inputs. Here are more details:
- all up weight 1550g
- prop 10x4.5
- motor 1450kva
- full load current @12.1v is 47A.

Greg, I must say that was a nice landing but I'll pickup some disposable travel undewears from the dollar shop for next Wednesday. :)

Frank
Title: Re: Flight Instruction
Post by: sihinch on May 30, 2013, 09:25:39 AM
So it's going to be about 550 watts.

And 1550g is about 3.5 lbs.

So watts/lb is a little high but not outlandish.
Title: Re: Flight Instruction
Post by: Candu on May 30, 2013, 10:16:34 AM
Just looked up spec for the motor. Recommended prop is 8x4 for 4C lipo and 9x6 for 2C. So obviously my prop is oversized. Simon, you did mentioned that a couple of weeks ago.

Title: Re: Flight Instruction
Post by: Gregor77 on May 30, 2013, 11:47:21 AM
I also suspect with the large prop, you are hammering the tail on the plane.  I found at 1/2 it became very uncontrollable.  But at 1/4 it seemed better.  But PLEASE find another plane!

I'd like to congratulate Tom Stilo, who was awarded his "Park Wings" on Wednesday.   :)

Tom can now fly a Park Flyer class of aircraft without an instructor (see definition below.)  Have fun Tom, and of course, be safe!

Park Flyer Class Model- An electric model of any construction whose weight does not exceed 2.5lbs (1.13kg) including flight battery. These models are also restricted to a maximum speed of 60mph (96kph).

Funny exchange between flight instructor and student captured on video. The audio from the video is probably too low to hear clearly but here is the transcript:

Instructor: "....alright, are you ready?"
Student: "Yap"
Instructor: "It's yours."
Student: "OK...      I dont't think I have it."
Instructor: "You better...  I'm not flying it."
Student: "No, I don't have it."
Instructor: "OK, That's me."
Student: "Yap,"
Instructor: "HaHa HaHa"
Student: "You have to flip it all the way to the back - the switch."
Instructor: "That's why, OK... That's a good one.OK, Do you have it now? There we go"
Student: "Yap, I have it, I have it, yap, I got it, I got it, I got it...."

A fun and enjoyable session. Here's the video clip. You may have to view it under full screen to see the tiny planes.

That's the spirit!

Plus it was more like a hard landing than a crash.

Don't worry Ed,  I've done worse things to other people's planes.  The damage looked minor and that plane will fly again.

It does look like it comes in pretty hot on landing though. Long approaches are the order of the day for that one. Just be sure not to go too close to the road. Bad things happen over there.

It was another great Wednesday night.  After two fly days for me with the club I just wanted to say everyone is very friendly and supportive with is a huge plus.  The only problem is that you guys can be a bad influence as I have already bought new 3D plane due to someones recommendation last week and now I will probably need a pylon racer after last nights show and tell.  I will miss the folks on Wednesday nights but now that I have my wings I have more days to choose from to fly. ;D ;D

Yes Tom I'm referring to your Avistar. Ron cautioned me that the controls were soft but I guess my reflexes did not anticipate the elevator response at landing speed. Honestly a rookie mistake on my part.
If there are any troubles with the repair let me know.
You were flying terrific and made a perfect approach.

I second that. Perfect weather, and some really great flying.

Notable events:

John MacKenzie, Frank Tong, and Kory R all earned their park wings.

Congrats...!

(sorry Jack, no photos, one day I will learn)

And there was a car fire! (not at the club but on the road) this club has it all!

A great night tonight! I really enjoyed flying with some new students (Thomas and Richard) plus got some laps in with my Nooner before the big race this weekend.

And it was great to see Ken Wilton drop by and fly his Beaver float plane.....

And Mike has some "wing" news, but I'll save that for him!

As Simon mentioned tonight was another great night for flying.  Bert and I flew has new Mentor and it was fantastic,  Thomas and his father flew their new Apprentice S,  and lots of the students flew solo for the first time. The flying is really coming along and everyone is having a great time.

Congratulations are in order to  James Eng who earned his MAAC wings tonight!  Nice work James!

Tonight's forecast (July 10) is iffy. Chance of thunder showers, and winds between 15 and 20 kph. Not ideal.

Keep an eye on the weather and I will post to the forum this afternoon whether or not there will be any flying tonight.

Another fine night of training.

Despite the heat and the challenging cross wind (east to west) a number of students came to the field and flew their models. Overall it was a fun evening.

And we got to watch Simon maiden his new Reverb hotliner. Most agreed that Ed's daughter flew it better.

Is the Habu slow enough for Park Wings pilots???? May want to check with Mike H.  :-\  I belive it is good for about 80-85mph.

I'm all for people advancing and developing their skills, but part of the wings program (both Park wings and MAAC wings) is about ensuring people have a good awareness for safety and risk.  My advice would be to save the Habu for once you have your full MAAC wings.   :)

Title: Re: Flight Instruction
Post by: sihinch on July 25, 2013, 03:12:05 PM
My personal opinion (and not an official "club" opinion) is that you may be better focusing on getting your MAAC wings, rather than trying all your new planes.

I know how exciting it is - I had 4 planes ready to fly before I had my wings ( ;D) but if you keep swapping to different planes, and doing different types of flying (not focusing on becoming used to flying with others, in a controlled, considerate and safe manner) it will take you longer to get your MAAC wings.

Once you have your wings, you can fly what you want, when you want (as long as your safe, of course!)  :)

Many thanks to all the instructors for all their dedication, experience, and guidance. The learning process has "set me free" to some extent. But there is always more to learn.

I celebrated my passage into pilot-hood by buying a ParkZone Visionaire. I have read through the manual (some parts more than once). All the parts are installed in the right place. I have set up my transmitter and have even got my DX5e buddy-boxed to my DX7. All the trims are trimmed. It is ready to fly!

The following is a probably a stupid question...

Any takers to check out and maiden this airplane and help with some buddy-box time on Wednesday evening?

The wind was a little challenging between 5 and 6 o'clock, but then it pretty much calmed down to almost 0 kpm.

Although Vic already has his wings, he came out to maiden his new Parkzone VisionAire 3D flyer, and by his second flight was doing some really nice aerobatics. The plane flies extremely slowly at 1/2 throttle and is a big change from an Apprentice.

This was Graham's second time out, and he was taking off, flying smoothly and landing nicely, as if he has been doing it for years. Apparently though, he has, except with full scale aircraft, so I guess he knows a few things about flying already.  ;D

Richard flew his Super Cub a couple times, and he's progressing really well, too. On his second flight he flew completely from hand-launch until landing. It was great!

Michael H, our esteemed Chief Flight Instructor worked with others, including Dash, who was learning on an Apprentice, and Burt who's really practicing those landings.

It was a very pleasant evening.

Many thanks to Michael and Mike for another wonderful evening of flying.  Your dedication and patience are very much appreciated!

While my full scale experience may be helpful in knowing what the aircraft should do, learning and executing it from this new perspective remains the challenge.  Still lots to learn but here's hoping practice and practice makes better and better...

Despite the brief downpour, we had some good conditions for flying last night and several students took advantage of that. Some notes from the field on the second to last day of training for 2013:

1. Graham and Bob had some great flights with their Apprentice models.
2. Bert flew his Mentor several times, solo! And did very well.
3. Robert Pike gave a short lecture on flying scale models.
4. Richard flew his Supercub in near perfect conditions.

One more Wednesday to go.

Well, this is it... the last night of instruction, and you'll have to do it without me  :'( while I toil in a computer lab.

Anyway, it's been a pleasure.

As always, charge your batteries and be ready to fly at 6pm.

Mike

Well, the official instructional flying season finished tonight.  Much appreciation to Simon and Greg this evening, along with Michael and Mike for all of your support and teachings this past month.  I learn something new from you each time out!

I am looking forward to next season already and hope there may be an opportunity to fly some more this year with you before the snow flies.

Thanks a million!!
(...whatever are you going to do on Wednesday evenings now?)

And a special thank you to the Husein brothers for tonight's pizza. :)

Tonight was great! Relaxed, low-key fun and good times with friends.

The wind was gusty and the sky was grey, both of which added some challenge to tonight. But the students did fantastically! Graham flew his Apprentice very well and showed me how to side-slip an approach! At times the Apprentice looked just like a full-size Cessna on final. And Burt flew his Mini Nexstar with panache!

Imran got a maiden on his new Carbon-Z Yak and then proceeded to give an aerobatic display to make many jealous.  Meanwhile Ilyan was telling us what planes he got for his Birthday (Happy Birthday!) making us even more jealous!

But what made the night extra special was the Husein Pizza! Thanks Guys (and Kavita!) for ruining my diet! It was worth it though.

To top it off Ed gave us a UFO show and an educational talk on mushrooms!!!!! Go figure!

Great night.  And Shana Tova!

Your welcome :) I just wish there were more people there to eat it. Good evening though :) really windy but, that's what makes it fun! The carbon z yak felt really natural, its much like the leader. I did vertical rolls, loops, rolls, low passes and a torque roll for a few seconds on the first flight!  Greg is a witness ;)
The pizza is not all, I had something else but since not many people showed up I decided to save it for the next time everyone's together ;)

Remember this monster at the beginning of the flight instruction season?

As you recall from earlier posts, I rebuilt it back in June.  But only until this morning that I finally gathered enough nerves together to re-maiden it.  To my surprise, maiden went extremely well. I have to give credit to the Chief Flight Instructor and the training team for this success. Thanks guys for a great season. Here's the maiden flight video from this morning:
