September 15, 1940 was the last day of large scale Luftwaffe raids on Great Britain as Hitler gave up trying to establish air superiority over the RAF.
September 15, 2012 was quite different over ROGO field and the Luftwaffe never even showed up!

Phew! Figured some of you scale types might spot the soundtrack for the fake that it is...it is a Merlin but it's in a Mustang rather than a Hurricane or Spit!
Sunday September 15, 1940 was probably the greatest single day air battle ever fought with over 1,500 aircraft involved on that day and the last really concentrated attempt by the Luftwaffe to annihilate the RAF. For the full history lesson, see Wikepedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Britain_Day (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Britain_Day)
September 15, 2012 at ROGO was a fun tribute to the flyers and aircraft on both sides. We gathered around 1500h (3:00 p.m.). flew our Spitfires and Hurricanes and frightened the Luftwaffe out of the skies over ROGO! There was some ragged formation flying, individual flights and some really good scale flying, take-offs and landings. For a flavour of BofB day 2012 at ROGO, check the video at the beginning of this thread. This year rumour has it the Luftwaffe is sending BF 109Fs to battle the RAF over ROGO...next year, who knows...Heinkels, Stukas, BF110s???
This year, we'll present awards for the following;
Best BofB British Model
Best BofB German Model
Best Landing with a Wheeled BofB Model
Best Formation Flying (two, three or four models)
Pray for good weather and come join the fun around 3:00 p.m. next Sunday...awards around 5:00 p.m.
"Did Mustangs fly in the Battle of Britain?" I was asked at the field today. No, they didn't, nor did P-47's, FW 190's, or Lightnings in spite of their popularity with RC flyers but all these are models of WWII aircraft and if they're the closest you have, bring them along!
I'm going to bring my HK Spitfire (a MKIX with 1944 invasion stripes and not really a BofB flyer), my e-Flite Hurricane which is modelled after a real BofB aircraft, a semi scale MeBF109? and Dad's Unionville Tiger Moth done up in RAF wartime trainer colours which was the RAF's basic trainer in 1940.
I'm trying to get my Lancaster in flight-ready condition again!
Will you allow me to fly that, Wing Comander Quantock?
I just checked the British planes that participated in the Battle of Britain. Surprised to find out there were only 7 planes- The Spit (mostly mark 1's, some Mark 2's), Hurricane, Lancaster, Blenheim, Beaufighter, Defiant and Gladiator biplane.
So if I use a two bladed prop on my Spit and power it down it will be a Mark 1 (4 cells, 46" span). Damn, the ailerons are not fabric covered. ;D
Remember, if you notice a scale defect on my Spit you are standing way too close. 8)
Frank
I'm bringing my "stand way the heck off" scale ME109 in an authentic "Battle of Britain" paint scheme. Along with a little surprise for visuals!
You're not gonna believe this, but ....
a Parkzone Habu-2 in the BoB.
Seems legit ;D
LOL nice one Michael. ;D
Wow that's some great research work Michael!
I think if photographic proof is provided it should be considered.
Simon,
Squadron Leader Frank's post indicates Lancasters were part of the BofB...that makes it legit. Hadn't run across that one in the reading I've done, but you learn something everyday.
Michael,
Neat picture, but...PZ Habu? Quoting you replying on another thread to an earlier post, "if that's the best you can do..."
We have two honorary judges to judge the models
Best BofB Luftwaffe model
Best BofB RAF model
Best Wheeled Landing BofB model
Best Formation Flying (two, three or four models) Schwarms or Finger Fours anyone?
I have submitted a request to the met office for the same weather as last Sunday.

I understand there will be Nooner racing on the same day. ;D
Is that a scramble, then?
Oh yea I remember that day. That's the day I won the battle of Brittan with my Nooner. It was top secret at the time so it didn't get a lot of press. Winning the Nooner race this weekend will be a commemorative event of the day and could possibly clinch my championship points total! That's right Mike I went there!
Ed, lets not forget, the under-dog won!!!
Michael...your abilities with photoshop are... ;D I had a good yuk at both of them! Now, choosing a porn star to launch a Nooner...I dunno...
That guy with the Nooner can't be British .... he's not wearing long pants.
Jack.

Frank,
I was surprised to find the Lancaster in this list...a quick google indicated the first Lancaster didn't fly until 1941. Battle of Britain is generally considered to be May-October 1940.
Okay all you photoshoppers, there's some target material for your creativity...
Really looking forward to Sunday.
I found another cool BoB image. ;D
Jack, I think we've found your new profile picture.

Points totals... pfft you can have that. Just remember when the whole world was watching at the marquee event of the season, you lost, to me.
Looks like "Bomber Higgins".
Jack.
Amazing what the right sport jacket will do for one's figure! ;D
Jack, to heck with the name "Bomber Higgins". We'll call you "Biggins" from now on.
Frank
That was fun ! ;D
What an awesome day!
Casual, fun & friendly!
Thanks Bill & Jack! And Dr John.
Wow,
What a great day at TEMAC!
Racing and warbirds!
Thanks to the organizers and to all the participants!!
Glenn
Im still disappointed in myself that I ran into the back of Greg's plane. I think the ME109 turned me into a scoundrel! I was having just too much fun dogging him around the sky.
Another fun day at the field. Good to see all the smiling faces and some nice flying by young and old.
As for the Nooner races... I was putting it all out there today. Pulled all the stops and flew like a mad man in the qualifiers then struggled to finish the race in the Final. Look over your shoulder Frank you have the target on your back now buddy!
Glen this is for you.

no worries Ed she'll be ready for next event ;D
here are few shots from today's BoB event
Can't believe I managed to crash the Lancaster twice in the same day!

Can't believe I managed to crash the Lancaster twice in the same day!
Look at the photo above!! You had your own Lanc repair team!! had we tried I bet you could have crashed it a third time!
I always remember the one that used to be on the lakeshore and seeing yours in the air brings back the memory of that one for me.
The one on the Lakeshore is the same one that ended up at the Toronto Aerospace museum, that they were in the process of refurbishing before they got kicked out of Downsview. It was always so interesting to speak with Alex Gray, the older gentleman who would hang around the museum and chat about his times flying the Lanc on the night raids on Berlin.
BTW, most you newer guys won't know about the times that we arranged to have the Hamilton Lancaster, B25, Beech 18, Stearman PT17, and Harvard, fly over our little electric fun fly's from 2004 to 2006. It was so cool. In fact, those of us who camped the night, were wakened by the sound of the Steerman one morning, then the Harvard another morning, ROARING down the runway at 7:30am. It was awesome!
Shucks, you Guys! What are you doing - guilting me in to fixing the Lanc again!
If I do, I'm stripping it down to reduce the wing loading.

I have video footage somewhere of the B25 making its pass. What a beast. I'll see if I can dig it up.
Ya. They wouldn't bring the Lancaster down really low, but I recall the others doing an impressive, low pass just for little ol' us :)
Simon,
Your personal repair staff is standing by to rebuild the Lancaster if you need help. The usual shop at 142 Glenrose Ave. 8)

I miss those York Electric Fun fly's. It was an annual must attend. Great event including the Roast Beef dinner!
