Title: Ryerson 2020 program to start February
Post by: Frank v B on January 06, 2020, 07:17:13 PM
We are about to kick off this year's Ryerson pogram.  There will be 3 projects, one flying and two drone-based.

The contest is the first week in May with the flying starting when all the technical challenges have been overcome.
The projects involve emergency medical and medicine delivery and involve GPS, robotic arms and multiple delivery points per flight.

It sounds like a real challenge this year but Ryerson students have always come through.

Updates will be posted under the Ryerson heading.

The real beauty of the Ryerson program is that when they go to a competition they involve other faculties so they can get hands-on experience as well.  An example is the travel arrangements, food and logistics are handled by students from those disciplines.

Note:  TEMAC members have supported Ryerson for about 10 years.  TEMAC volunteers to help any Ryerson Aerospace/Aeronautics student with projects that involve RC models.  The projects range from school projects, post-grad projects to national and international competitions. The first years involved regular RC planes but it has shifted to multi-rotors the past few years.  One major achiviement was the first heavy lift project limited to a 1000 watt electric motor.  The Ryerson students who learned to fly at TEMAC came 3rd in a competition in California that included MIT and Harvard students.

Chris,

Rhetorical question:  "Does your Alma Matter?" ;) ;)

Frank

ps: it has been great fun dealing with Ryerson.

I love that our club is supporting Ryerson students in their studies and experiments.  We all will eventually benefit from their achievements.

By the way, it is a matter of mind over matter.... If you do not mind, it does not matter...  Alma or no Alma.

Got a call from Alex (Ryerson Student) with the next step.

This year the pilot has to take the Transport Canada on-line course and pass a flight test with a certified test guy.

I called Drew Martin today from Brampton who has helped Ryerson before and attended one of our Pilot Meeting with Fred Messacar.  Drew has focussed on drones for the last 5 years and flies them professionally.  It turns out he is a certified Transport Canada tester as well.

Drew was more than happy to help us out since I don't speak  "Dronese".

Hey, any update on the Ryerson team this year?  Would be great to come out to the field and see what the latest adventures and challenges are.......

I'm always keen to learn from the Ryerson team.  And share in their fun!  ;D

Simon,

Funny you should ask.  Mr .Rob Dickinson has been talking to Alex of Ryerson to do a show and tell presentation on this year's project/contest.  I believe it is set up for the March Meeting.

The biggest change with the Ryerson projects over the last 10 years has been a shift in knowledge.  In the first year they came to us to learn how to fly.  We had all the knowledge and the equipment.  I assure you the reverse is now true.  There is not a single TEMAC member who has the equipment they are playing flying with now.

That's awesome! I really do hope we can make the talk happen. I'd love to hear about their project and learning.

I'd love to know where the future of our hobby and the "drone" industry is leading.
