Title: CLUBS: Just our team
Post by: bfeist on May 06, 2013, 03:10:01 PM
Just our team can see this. Greg Hazelton's idea. So this is a private area to discuss our team's racing endeavours.

So just the other team members or all racers?

Just Team Clubs can see this forum. There's a forum for each of the teams that's invisible to all non-team members.

One is the loneliest number....

A few of us got some hot laps in today with the Nooners .  Racing was a little wild but everyone seemed to enjoy and be able to fly the circuit.  Winds were quite high and from the east but the airframes handled great.

Glen flew well but was having battery issues as they were giving the low voltage signal.

Mike Hazelton flew VERY well and his model was quite fast with the black hobby king motor on 4.1x4.1 prop

Greg on the same motor seemed to be off the pace slightly and tried the 4.5x4.1. I think his batteries were dropping some voltage.

Simon was well in the hunt staying in the lead group and his flying is showing improvement with each practice race.

Michael did not join the racing but did fly his model a couple times and announced how happy he is with its smooth and stable characteristics.

My plane looked to be as fast as any of the fast movers.  I was flying a consistently smaller circuit than the rest making it possible for me to lap the pack. As the others find the small circuit it will be very tight racing. Once we get some actual pylons and start working at it its going to be a lot of fun!

Sounds great (and stressful).

I finally finished up my Naked Nooner. It's on a 2700kv motor, 4.5x4.5 drawing 18.5A static. Lots of cooling, should be able to go 4.75x4.75 if necessary. Flying with older 2100mah batteries. They fit fine and weigh 140g.

Will maiden it once the wind dies down.

GREAT!  This team is coming together!  If any of you want to get out a night to practice a little let me know I'm in!

For throws I would start at + -5mm for ailerons and elevator with 2" cg

AUW of the Naked Nooner is 517g. But I could put a 1300mah battery in it to reduce it quite a bit (but I'd have to find one and buy one). Using a 2100 20C right now.

Calculators predict 101mph. Oh and I won't be flying the 500meters off the flight line to get to the back 40!

Yeah, I calculated 101 mph at static test rpm, but I thought props unload at speed in the air, increasing rpm about 20%, or is that only for gas engines?

By the time you add the slip of the prop and the drag of the airframe my guess is my plane is near 100mph but we could do a couple timed runs to figure it out.

The plan is to use the TP packs for my "racing" packs and the Zippys for my "sport" packs.   Pcalc
Numbers with my Mega 16/15/3 3000kv and a 4.5x4.5 prop are:
24.3A
30259rpm
128 pitch speed
36.8ozs thrust
270 watts
Might have to prop down some!  ;D   Will check "real" numbers later.

With 1300mah TP 45/90C packs: 24.89A for 280w with TGS Sport 4.5x4.5E Precision propeller
With 1800 Zippy 20c packs: 17.75A for 190w with TGS Sport 4.5x4.5E Precision propeller

So ... will have to prop down when racing since the TP packs are my "racing" packs. ;)

That's quite a difference in output between the two packs with the same prop.  Did you happens to note the voltage under load for each test.

So are we going to have some team points this weekend?  Even if you launch and fly the pylons at your own pace you will still earn the team valuable points towards the championship!  As it stands were in last place lol. I know obligations will keep some away but the remainder of us have to do our best. We can't just sit back and let those other "cards" take the lead.

Well I intend to be there ... now if I can only get this damn plane in the air!  I've tried to maiden twice now and both times ended up with some radio glitching problems. Yesterday I swapped out the receiver I was using so this evening (Thursday) I intend to finally get this maiden done.

Unfortunately I am on the scratch list for July 7, at least until late afternoon.  "Obligation" would be putting it mildly in terms of describing the forthcoming family commitment.  But I did maiden my plane, so the future holds promise, if not racing points.

Cheers!

Great to see you race today Andy!  How did you feel about racing for the first time?  I hope you enjoyed it as this is a great series to work on some useful flying skills.  Colin also got out and flew his Nooner a few times. Looks like it was fast and he seemed happy with it.

Hi Ed:

The racing was definitely fun.  I consider it a huge personal success that I survived the mass launch and returned with my aircraft intact.  That was my first race ever!  The plane handles very well at approach and landing speeds.  I still have to do some fine tuning of the aircraft and of course my flying skills to smooth things out at racing speed.  Once I get that done, I will pick up the speed a bit.

Thanks so much for all of your encouragement, good counsel and great humour.

Cheers.

Andy

OK boys we have to work together for final race of the season.  Team hearts gained some big points today and to cement our "dream team" to the record books its going to take all we've got.

Colin I understand your plane is damaged beyond repair?  Would it make at least a couple laps to get us some extra points?  Andy your keeping it together out there and we need you buddy.

I'm going to do my best to get Ben into first place next race as he is just six points out if second overall. I'm even going to drop back if I'm in front of him!

Every point counts. What hurt us in this last race (other than me trimming for the whole the first race) was that they had two Clubs members and the top 3 point scorers in the same qualifying heat. We should ask Jack if he tries to spread the teams out in the heats (i'm not sure how he chooses the heats). Given that we only had 9 flyers, this was probably necessary. Also, I wasn't too worried in the first race because last time I came 3rd in the first race I went on to come 2nd overall and top point scorer overall because there was a consolation race (that I won). Maybe there weren't enough flyers yesterday for a consolation race this time around. I'm not sour at all, I had a lot of fun. I was all over the sky in the qualifier--I finished where I deserved to finish. Though, I would like to know how the races are organized in advance, but I'm unsure how to ask Jack without sounding like a whiny back-seat driver.

Mmmmm Pooooints.

Maybe you could try turning off the cutoff in the castle firmware. You're only flying 10 laps so no need for a cutoff anyway.

What size pack are you guys using ... you always seem to have lots of juice left at the end. The one time I was able to last for the entire race (with power) I won the heat. That's when I had a honkin 2200 pack in there.  Now because of some reconfiguration of my innards I can't get such a pack to fit.

Colin
Title: Re: Just our team
Post by: Ededge2002 on September 23, 2013, 12:14:04 PM
I'm using 1300's. Normal recharge is about 500mA.  Can't understand why your using so much juice. Is it possible the motor is messed?
Title: Re: Just our team
Post by: wollins on September 23, 2013, 12:42:58 PM
Anything is possible ... don't see how though cause the amp draw is normal.  Something's going on that's for sure. BTW, the wing held up ok with my test flight yesterday but I have a SEVERE trim problem now. I launched her and she climbed so much that she could have done a loop! Took full down trim to get her to just fly level with me holding a bit of down elevator.

Brought her down and the elevator was level/neutral (with full down trim) so I guess when I re-glued back in my elevator servo I had a bit of up in it.  Can't be adjusted without me busting it back outta there so ... In any event seems like the incidence of the wing is also off ... yet there was no change (that I can see) to he airfoil based on my repair.  Reason I think that is like I said full down trim (so now elevator is neutral and even a bit down) and she still wants to climb if I let go the stick.  Took a pic with my laser and it is off by about 3mm.  However with it in this same AOA before the repair she flew fine.  Maybe my repair did change the airfoil and thus the AOA some.
Anyways, this means I have to shim the TE and get back to the field to do some adjusting flights before Sat. (which is a PITA)

Post by: bfeist on September 23, 2013, 01:43:45 PM
I suspect battery position has a drastic effect on elevator trim in nooners as well. When you're doing your testing make sure your battery is going in in the exact position you've determined.

Same as Ed, I put in about 550mAh into my 1300 back after a flight. Doesn't seem to matter which prop I use it's always around that value.

Ben

Hmmm ... didn't think of the battery shifting ... In any event, here's the wing now "shimmed" so we'll see how it does now. First pic is "before" and second after.

Congrats on your win Ed. Well deserved.
