Title: Frenchman's Bay Float Fly - Saturday, September 6 - 4:30
Post by: piker on September 02, 2014, 10:36:38 AM
Ye-Ha!  We get to go float flying AGAIN on Saturday, September 6th (this weekend)!    ;D

I can't remember why we scheduled two weekends in a row, but I'm glad we did after the blow-out at Tavares Pond on Saturday.

So, back to Frenchman's Bay for another exciting and beautiful evening of the best type of RC flying there is... float flying.

We have an enthusiastic bunch of float flyers in our gang, with excitement and great plans for more building over the winter.  Come on out and see what all the cool kids are doing.  Once you try float flying, you'll be hooked and will be rewarded with a whole new appreciation for our hobby.

We'll aim to set up at the parking lot, like last time, but if that's too busy, we'll head back to our usual pit area.

I'll be there with the leaky retrieval boat and my usual support gear.

See Ya at the Bay!

Here's a link to the two possible sites.  The one on the right is option #1, the area on the left is Option #2.  Look for my trailer when you arrive:

It's going to be a great day of float flying on Saturday.  The weather will be MUCH better then last Saturday, and this time we'll have Michael out with his fleet of seaplanes, and Colin will be there with his CL-415 Water Bomber, for the first time!

Get your planes together, charge your batteries, and we'll see ya at the Bay!

I'm planning to be there.
Look fwd to seeing a bunch of guys out getting their bottoms wet on Saturday--Wait a minute, that didn't sound right.
I'm planning on re-maidening my Slowboat. It's had a series of mods.
If the weather is as good as Rob has promised we should have a great time and perform astonishing feats of aviation for one and all to enjoy.
In fact if it's that good Rob won't even have to bring the retrieval boat!

Think up,

Ken

Glad we're going to Frenchman's...I used to windsurf there and there was rarely enough wind...now I'm trying to fly floatplanes, there's often too much!

Hmmmm

The forecast for tomorrow (Saturday) evening is not looking that great right now.  They're calling for winds similar to last weekend's blow-out.

I'm going to watch the wind as we get through the day tomorrow and I'll still show up at the Bay if it looks even close to reasonable.  But I'm also willing to try again on Sunday evening as the forecast for that day is much more pleasant.

PLEASE check back here before you head to the Bay tomorrow, as I'll post around 3:30 with my thoughts and intensions, or text or call me at 416-828-8722.

Let's hope for the best, and if anyone is interested, we can postpone to, or repeat on Sunday.

We only have a couple more chance to float fly this year so I want to make the best of it.

Yes today isn't looking too promising. I think I'm going to save my goodwill points for tomorrow when the conditions look ideal. If there's flying at the Bay tomorrow, I'll be there. Might even bring the FLOATMOSA to entertain the crowd.

Yep!  The weather sucks and it's unlikely that it will improve much going into this evening, so I'm postponing until tomorrow evening.

So, to be clear:

Float flying for tonight, Saturday, Sept 6 is CANCELLED !!!!!!!!!  Don't show up!

Float flying for Sunday, Sept. 7th at 4:30 is ON!!!!  Full speed ahead.  DO show up   ;D

I hope everyone can make it tomorrow.  I know Michael can't, but that's his vault for not praying hard enough for good float flying weather this morning.

The reschedule was a good call.  I stopped by Frenchman's Bay ay 4:30 today and it was very windy.  No good at all.  Then I was in the area again at 7:00, so I stopped by again, and it was just as windy.

The forecast for tomorrow afternoon and evening is for 5km winds, which tells me that it's actually going to calm right down in the evening.

I hope most of the float flying gang can make it!!

;D

Folks, updated forecast from Ajax:

super sunny, winds 5 - 10km/h, HOT AS HELL! (I wish I had a pool). At least I have a beer keg with me  8)

So I'm assuming the float fly today is an absolutely GO!

Yep.  I just got home from working.  Now I'm heading to the Bay.  I'm hoping there's room in the parking lot like last time, but with such a nice day I'm worried it might be busy there.  Well, I guess we'll find out.

See Y'all there!

Yes!  It certainly WAS a beautiful evening for a float fly at Frenchman's Bay last night!

I arrived at about 4:20 and met Andre on my way in.  The parking lot had lots of open space for us to use and the water level was lower than last time, so we had room to park the planes on the beach (or the parking lot as some did), and we had a nice long flight line/launching area.  The winds were light, and coming from the south/west, and really didn't offer any problems to our flying which started right away after Andre helped me get the boat set-up.

We had a great turnout with lots of our regular float flyers and a whole bunch of seaplanes on the flight line.  We just flew and flew and flew, and touch and go's were plentiful.  As the late afternoon turned to evening, the sun lowered in the sky, and although it was a beautiful sun set, it made seeing the planes, when flying to the west, a little more challenging.  But with the sunset came calm air and glass smooth water, which is what float flying is all about, in my opinion...

We flew until after sunset and only packed the boat away after it was getting difficult to see the planes in the air.  Still, it was tempting to keep flying as the conditions were perfect.  I think for next year we need to have lighting systems on our planes so we can extend the flying a little later.

It was such an ideal evening for float flying that it made the take-off and landings easy, so we had NO crashes or dunks.  I only used the boat twice. Once to get Glenn's Micro Cub that flipped over on take-off, and then at the end of the evening, when I tried to get fancy with my water bomber and ended up thumping it down on a touch and go attempt (actually, you can see that in Oscars video above).  No problem for the plane, but the two wheels that were merely taped on the side (so I could remove them later when I get around to adding a little more detail), fell off into the water.  I had to take the boat out to get them back   :)

Thank you to EVERYONE who came out and made this (and every) float flying event a huge success.  TAMAC is very serious about having fun, and I'm glad to see we bring that vibe to the float fly's.

Let's do it again in two weeks!

So what did I use all those words for?... Oh ya, to annoy Simon (he can't see very many words at one time on his phone.)

Great picture, Greg!!

I really enjoyed last evening's float fly-- great weather, water, planes and pilots.
As the sun set, everything just became so calm and relaxing.
A perfect way to conclude the weekend.

Thank you so much Robert!
Oscar's video is a nice capture of the evening-- a lot better than recent TV :) :)
(Imran-  it was fun flying the Icon's together.  Let's do it again ;D )
