Title: Nooner Wimps, are you out there?
Post by: Papa on April 16, 2014, 10:39:06 AM
Well the Racing Season is almost upon us and not a comment from the wimps, sorry, pilots.

My money is on Hearts to be the winners at the end of the season.
Good steady flyers with some unknown elements.
I know both Imran and Mike are fast fliers.

Team Spades will have their work cut out for them unless they bring in another pilot.

On paper Diamonds and Clubs should be evenly matched but I think they will have trouble getting out of each others way.

Which ever team makes the best start in the early season will will most likely end up winners.

Captains, Glenn, Ed, Ben and Simon. let's have some stirring words, thrash talk, to bolster the courage and moral of your team.

Not a part of a team? Throw in your 2 cents worth and have some fun.

Jack

So is my team allowed 5 pilots? We should definitely win then!

Whether or not they are pilots is a moot point but you do have a full compliment. Ed is one short. Mind you you have a "short" one too.

Jack.

I think you have your clubs and spades mixed up, Jack! That's why people are poking fun!

Thank you I missed that.

And I thought they were complimenting me.

Just wait until I get creative with the results then we shall see.

Piker and Edge you're on my black list now.

Jack.

re:"Piker and Edge you're on my black list now".

Welcome to the club... or should I say ....Jack's black book.  I have lived there for about two years... page 1492! :D

Hope to show up at the field clean-up by 10:00 Saturday after a pre-scheduled fixit appointment.  Once the clean-up work is done I am bringing out two* Nooners and 4 batteries.  The practice race is on.

Frank

* discipline! It guarantees me two flights..hopefully of reasonable duration. 8)

I was just polishing my trophy and wondered how many boxes of Kleenex I'm going to need to bring Sunday to sop up a winters worth of preparation tears?

All good Simon. There was some great flying, some tough losses and some tragedy in the racing today.  Mid airs, in flight failures and landing pylon hits along with tough conditions took out a number of the contenders. It was a tough day for several racers. I still haven't figured out if how or where I contacted Ben in the final. We were battling for position and I took a different line through the corner and there was a sound of contact but I can not locate any damage to my plane. Glenn having the wing hold down fail could have been the high speeds of the down wind run and the bumpy conditions taking out another contender for the final results.  I don't know if I could have caught you @sihinch but I was trying and admit I swerved when I saw Glenn's wing in my path but I doubt I would have had time regardless.

I haven't given up!

So, in the spirit of this thread... "Nooner Wimps" , I see that Ed is running for the hills!  Parliament Hill that is...

Couldn't take the pressure EH, Ed?

Maybe Ed will sell his Nooner? So someone else can join the racing....

Jack has agreed that despite my absence I would have won or placed second in the remaining races. My points will continue to climb regardless what you girls try to do.  Please spell my name correctly on the trophy. Same as last year.

I was cleaning out my garage and wondered if the Nooner pylon race series starter had been revamped into working correctly. If not a think I found the perfect starter for the racing as it clearly has "pylon brand hi-tork starter" written on it.

OK OK enough sand bagging girls. Do I have to come back to beat Simon for you?  Is he jumping the gun launching?  Is his plane really to spec?  Did he cut more corners than i did?  I suspect that something here is awry!  This winning streak has to be stopped.

Oh congratulations Simon. Don't read that other part...
Title: Re: Nooner Wimps, are you out there?

Simon's plane (Nooner) is significantly faster than everyone else's.  During the last two finals, we started side by side then he quickly gained a lap over me and the rest of the group.  My flying during the final yesterday was a bit rough as we had a bumpy cross wind, but during the final before I flew a clean race... as clean as Simon's, but his plane is simply faster.  He must have some special motor in there.

Yes!  It's time to get serious.  Simon is becoming hard to live with!   ;D

I'm running a Mega 16/15/3 with a Nano-Tech 3S 1300mAh 45C lipo and 4.7x4.2 APC prop.

I cut the horizontal stab out and made a smaller one, with better alignment to the wing incidence.

All inspections welcome!

:)

We do tend to focus on the power systems, but chances are, your plane may simply be "cleaner" than the rest of ours.

As you said, you got rid of that horrid stab incidence angle that requires elevator correction and hence would cause a lot of drag.  And I know I have a couple of pieces of plywood holding my stab together, AND my wing fit is a bit sloopy, AND I've buried my motor in the dirt a bunch of times.  No wonder my plane is slower than yours.

That's why I'm looking forward to getting a new airframe to race with.  Maybe then I can give you a run for your money   ;D

How about the rest of you?  Are you going to let Simon and his team walk away with the season championship?  It's still early.  Still lots of racing left in the year!

Come on Greg and Ken (my teammates)... Let get him!

I might come back for a race in "hired gun" status!  Have you guys all updated your esc firmware via the link?  It allows you to get the prop brake to actually work and has a more recent program version that could unlock a little rpm. I did Simon's when I built his original one. Wonder if there is anything there. Or just go to my place with a bottle of wine and my wife would likely give you a Nooner as I've been out of town so much.....

i can help with updating your firmware... i'll bring my laptop to the field on Wednesday

no worries Rob ... i've got an air frame in the works and i'm hoping it works out better than my first crack at it :)

Funny "learning" mistake....

I was adding some carbon tissue to my Nooner wing, to hopefully prevent it from breaking where my crease was showing, and tried to come up with a way of weighting it down smooth on the surface.

I didn't have a sand bag or anything heavy and flexible so I pondered for a while and came up with a solution! I used a cushion with gym weights on it! Anyway, I tested it and thought it would work.

This morning when I checked my wing, the carbon is flush on the wing and my solution seems to have worked, but......

I know have the cushion pattern in the carbon/epoxy surface! Doh!!!

How do you update the firmware Ed?

In sportsman like way Simon I'm not telling you but the others can do it with the castle link on the computer. I think I went all the way to 4.19

You know if your going to have a Nooner do it all the way!

as usual Ed is correct they are at ver 4.19... straight from the CC website

Is that a booger on your finger in the last photo?  Why is the fuse covered in green tape or is this related to the first question? Looks good
Title: Re: Nooner Wimps, are you out there?
Post by: sihinch on July 30, 2014, 10:28:17 PM
It's LePage Express glue on my finger. And the tape on the fuse is to protect it from my grubby mitts as I reinforce it with fiberglass & epoxy (before it breaks at the wing saddle.)

Does the Stinger have a legal wing, or are you having to use your custom wings again?

BTW, I looked at my wing again and also felt it looked thick, so I measured it and it's closer to 12%!  I realized that the old templates I was using were 10% BEFORE the sheeting is applied.  Maybe they were for another plane, or maybe my Morphine was 12% in the old days and I didn't realize it.  Anyway, I'm cutting new cores   ;D
