Title: I can dream can't I?
Post by: Papa on December 04, 2010, 12:51:17 PM
If I had a Million Dollars what kind of a TEMAC flying club would I want? Since some of the recent posts were a bit contentious I thought I would introduce a lighter note and see what guidance we can give Michael for the future of the club. Please feel free to offer your suggestions. Mine are listed below. Michael and the other founders very astutely used the all encompassing term Model Aviation and this is reflected in some of my selections. Anyway feel free to join in.

Jack.

[:)]   One with the field facing north.
[:)]   A clubhouse with toilets and an instant brew coffee machine and card access to members.
[:)]   Two grass runways maintained like a golf green. 75' x 500', just west of north and just north of east.
[:)]   Two paved runways alongside the grass, 50' x 500'.
[:)]   Paved taxiways providing access from and to the pit area.
[:)]   An electronic frequency board with card access that would indicate the frequencies in use and by whom.
[:)]   An electronic wind direction anemometer that showed wind speed and gusts.
[:)]   Individually protected pilot stations along each active runway.
[:)]   Protective fencing between the pilots and the pits.
[:)]   Ten paved pit areas, 10' x 10' for each runway. These would be covered and with some partial protection from the wind. Vehicles could unload in the pit area but not park.
[:)]   Paved driveway and parking for 50 cars with a card access gate.
[:)]   A four acre pond with 12 inches of running water from a spring or year round stream. Will also provide water to maintain sprinkler system for the grass runways.
[:)]   A protected area with two circles for electric control line flying. These could double for Helicopter flying.
[:)]   A hill for launching gliders.
[:)]   Fire pits in each pit area for log burning for winter fun flys.

Well maybe some discrete apple schnapps in winter or some Gluvein to keep warm.

You don't need a hill to launch gliders, unless it is big enough to be a slope.[:)]

In the spring we were down in Texas at a C/L contest held at the Jetero R/C field,
It was pretty simple with just a single grass runway and a large covered pit area on a concrete pad. They had two toilets (some distance away[:D]) and a cooking area. Very nice setup.

They also have a couple of C/L circles behind the pits, although for the contest we actually flew on the runway

The club owns the field and leases the overfly area out to a local farmer. Big tax savings for keeping most of it agricultural.

Some pictures here:

There is an even nicer site in Houston proper at Scobee field:

It has a paved runway, but to be honest unless you are flying jets or EDF, grass is a much better surface.

And the most important one of all ... an electrical supply so we can power our chargers! [:D]

I like most of your ideas, except for the frequency board. In a few more years I don't think that's going to matter for much.

If I had to list my top two wishes. The first would be power. The second would be that the farmer stops growing crops and decides that sod is the way to go. [:)]

its hard to say what exactly in that list is meant to be serious and what is said as a joke, but there are some definite must have's on there, and some maybe's [:D]

Flying Saucer: It's all serious, remember I would have a million to spend.

Pat: That's a nice facility. Interesting to look at all the models. Could be TEMAC any afternoon.

Ok, so I have the coffee machine that I will donate for TEMAC use!  It is a 100+ coffee maker that is brand new in box (from 1980's) that was purchased for an event and never used.
