Title: Now you've built it what next???
Post by: Papa on January 21, 2013, 05:11:11 PM
Let's make a list of all the new models that we will be flying this Spring!

Let's see if they fall into some recognizable categories.

Then before we screw up let's have a "MAIDEN RALLY" so we can
have some experienced and competent members help us avoid
disaster on our first flight.

Some time in early May  EH!

How about it?

I will have a twin scratch built called a SpeedTwin.
and also a North Star with a twin Contra Rotating motor!

Jack.

Well, I've have the SE5a, the Sparrow Hawk, and hopefully my recovered CL-215 Water Bomber ready.  I'd also like to have a Nooner ready ( ;)) and maybe one other small plane ... 'cause that ain't enough!   :D

I have my micro P47 coming along, a 1/4-scale Piper Cherokee, an A-10 Bronco, and I want to re-maiden by 1/4-scale Tiger Moth.

In fact, it's still January, so maybe there's time for one more before flying season.  ;D

Maybe a members-only Maiden-day is not such a bad idea.

Hmm...  Maidens for members.  That should be a good membership draw!! :)

So far I have completed:
- repaired a small 36" span P-51 (crashed plane given to me) and put in an E-Flite 480.  (Overpowered!)
- repaired a small 36" P-40 Warhawk (crashed plane given to me) and put in a SuperTigre .10  (Overpowered!)
- refurbished a small 39" span PT 19 bought from a retiring member.  Put in an E-Flite 450 (conservatively powered)
- built a Nooner to TEMAC race specs with a CC 18 amp ESC, Eflite outrunner 6 2700 kv 4.1x4.1 APC prop
- halfway through assembling the Eflite P51B.  Will be finished in a week.
- bought Greg H's Evader, my first ducted fan.
- Finished the HK Fokker F-27 twin engine airliner.

Let me see.... 7 new airplanes I have never flown so a minimum of 7 flights covered for the spring. ;D.  Please let me defy gravity at least a few times with each airplane.

Now that the beautiful word "Maiden" has been corrupted by recent events
I think we should use another word for our First Spring Event. How about
"First Flight Fest"
"FFF"
"3F's"

Jack.

I think it's very nice that Jack wants us to have a "F-ing" good time this spring!  :)

The solution is very simple Rob.  Just fly all winter.  The air is fresh, you don't get sunburned, and there are NO bugs.  This building frenzy is just a symptom of frustration in folks who haven't  discovered the joys of long underwear, snow pants, toques, gloves and skis.  :D

I have a few new planes as well (one of which I already maidened ...) but I don't think I can wait till May !!...  :P

- So the HK Balsa Spitfire already flew but still need to fly it more and tweek it a bit is it's a bit wobbly and I need to learn how to hand launch it by myself.
- The Duces Wild from Michael will need to wait for a clean takeoff and landing strip.
- I am finishing a HK ASK 2.6m glider which was a pain in the but ARF... but hope it will fly as nice as it looks.
- RC Lander Cougar, got the box yesterday, shouldn't take long but I need to figure out how and if I do any ducting mods.

I agree.  Although the thought of maidening all the planes together sounds like fun, and would certainly be entertaining for the spectators, I don't think it's the best scenario for a test flight of a new plane.

Generally, you want as little distraction as possible, and the stress of having dozens of people watching you is not something that will help your concentration.  Also, it's generally a good idea to pick a day when the weather is favourable, not a day that is scheduled, and must go ahead dispite less than ideal weather conditions.

I hate to be a downer, but...  Cadez started it...

Well, then Wednesdays in the summer is off for sure... Not like I want to show the newbies how bad of a pilot I can be!  ;o)

I tend to do what Robert says.. Find the best suitable day, pre-check all morning. Once the stars are lined up, it's go time...   Cross fingers the Peanut gallery is not there yet.  Fly the plane a bit, trim out and land.  Once that is done.. Pretend that you have not flown the plane... Impress the peanut gallery that the maiden was perfect, then post the video on you-tube.  get 1 million hits and hope it goes viral.  Collect money and start over again.

The previously outlined recipe (ideal weather and minimal peanut gallery)for successful maidens is easier for us retired types. Followed it last November for three maidens...for the two models with wheels, I was alone at ROGO. Talk about performance anxiety!

Maybe we could make a collection here of post – maiden photos and videos. That way it's not so much about maidening at an event than it is about celebrating that the maiden happened at the appropriate time.

Sound too boring?

I was thinking, since I was such a downer, I should offer my suggestion for an alternative.

How about we can still have a get together, but call it a New Plane Debut Event.  That way, those who'd like the "experts" to give their plane a once over before the test flight, and have the support during a test flight can do so, and those who'd rather test fly with a smaller audience can do that before the event, then bring out their new model to the event.

I think this would still be a great get together as it'll be one place and time when we can all see the new models at the field.

Hi Guys,
I have 2 scratchbuilt seaplanes (Junkers 25 and a Boeing L-15) but I won't maiden them at the field , obviuosly.
I now have a p-38 that I have not flown that used to belong to another member so that will be a maiden.
I'm pretty sure that I 'll have more come the good weather.

What a bunch of wimps! I put together a nice entertaining event
and you all PPP all over it. Come on you can do better than that!

It's support we want. I challenge you all to step up and become
a part of the solution. Other club's may sneak around and do their
maiden's alone but we're TEMAC and we do it better.

LOL

Jack.

O.K., in support of TEMAC, let's all get together for a First Crash.... I mean, First Flight Festival!

Question:  Why do people watch NASCAR?   Answer: Hoping to see a crash!

I sense a theme here  :o

Oh, and hey Ken!  We'll have a First Flight Fesival at the shoreline too  :)

About photos before a first flight.

About 15 years ago a guy was maidening his kit-built Extra with a .90 slimer in it and I asked him if he wanted me to take a picture of it before the first flight.  He just looked up and said "no thanks". If it doesn't land in one piece I don't want a picture of it" 8).

A classic line.
