Title: Battle or Britian SIG ME109 Build
Post by: Gregor77 on September 03, 2013, 09:33:21 AM
Well after seeing the one sided Video of Bill's for last years Battle of Britian day, I thought it was time to balance the teams. I dug in the archieves and found the SIG ME109 that was hidden under the bed.  So I started the build last night.
Glenn has the same plane and really likes it.  I believe that it is 45" WS and all balsa wood with printed covering.  I am going to run a Turngiy 400 Watt motor in it with a 50AMP esc and hopefully a 4S, 2200 can be cramed in it.  HXT and Corono 939MG servos.  Sep UBEC for added protection.

As I started to build it, I noticed that some of the covering was damaged and the wood compressed.  Not cool.. but liveable.  I installed the motor and noticed (with all the experienced gained at TEMAC) that the thrust angle was pointing up?  So I had to add some shims to it to get a bit more down and something that at least looks normal.  A 10X7E prop should do the trick as I want the plane to be fast!

I decided not to add the landing gear for this one and keep it a belly landed.  I few pieces of pink foam I can make a skid to the bottom to help prevent the covering from being damaged on landing.

I like the printed covering, but with the new H9 stuff coming out it looks dated now.  I will have to repaint it to make the plane more mine anyways..

Hope my HK order comes soon.. Anyone have any HS81's avail?  I just need two.  The wings can use HXT900's or something close.

I should be able to get this one done fast.

Glenn what is yours running ?

Greg C,
SIG ...does that mean kit? If it does, your build speed puts mine to serious shame! I'd be lucky to have it ready for next season!
Have lots of HXT900s kicking around but no HS81s...sorry!
I keep you company with a smallish 109 from a Ken Manuel kit which I'll bring ...if it's a sunny day. It's gray and it virtually disappears on cloudy days! Otherwise I'll have to fly for the Brits...no other German models...yet.

   Hi Greg,

The 109 is considerably heavier than the HK Spitfire. I am running a Turnigy motor and 4S. I cant recall the motor size, but it is running pretty good with this setup.
I also ripped my wing apart and installed retracts. This is not for the faint of heart as it requires a new spar to allow for the wheel well.

Wow...lots of potential 109s this year! Should be possible to fly at least a schwarm!

So after the BOB Event, I gained some more energy and a couple of redbulls and we are off.  I managed to get most of the build done last night.  Just need to install the ESC (Still waiting from HK) and set up the control surfaces and rates.  Plane went together very well.  It looks great.  Glenn said that I should try it on the provided fixed landing gear first.
