Title: Personal Maidenfest this Sunday
Post by: Frank v B on April 25, 2014, 08:33:13 PM
Am ready to maiden both my Norseman (last year's build class model) and the Chili-Breeze, a 48"span pattern plane with an Eflite racing 25 (1250KV) and 8x8 APC prop.  At 800 watts on a 3 pound plane, it should work fine*.  Will attempt it Sunday at about 10 am.  Then get ready for the first Nooner Race.

Wish me luck.  Jack H. is in charge of good weather.

Frank

* 800 watts and 3 pounds! - I can hear Ededge yawning.  He considers that a bicycle with training wheels :D

I am sure if you wrote 8KW and 3 pounds he would be all over you :)

Bobby,

8KW- hell, all my 40 planes don't even add up to that!  Ededge has that much power packaged up in one plane. ;D

Hope you can make it this Sunday.  Good to see you last week at the field.

Good luck Frank. I may come and join you.

I have 3 racing/high performance planes to maiden - we may as we'll support each other.

266W/Lb is nothing to slouch at my friend.  Its not toing to get you admitted to the insanity club but that club already has your number on so many other levels.  Plus putting a EF1 power plant in something besides a dressed up slug should be fun!  I think I will bring you a sprinkled doughnut as encouragement!

Ed,

Donuts... great!!  I am not aiming to get admitted to the "Insanity Club".  You and Ben are the original Kilowatt Twins.  Two nuts, plus one Andy,  are enough for one club. ;D

For anyone who wants/needs help maidening an airplane tomorrow (Sunday), I am bringing my full spare parts kit to make sure everyone  gets off the ground.

Will you have to make two trips?

I hope to maiden my new Hangar 9 Beaver tomorrow.

I plan on being there about 11am.

Wind forecast for tomorrow morning is 20/33 km. I may wait until after the racing.

Michael,

It makes for slower take-off and landing speeds.  Unless, as usual with my luck, there are cross winds.
Will see you there.

Looks like due North, wind.

I will be there before noon.

If it's very windy, I'll eat a sandwich and fly later; if it's not windy, I'll eat a sandwich and fly sooner.

;D

It looks like a nice afternoon for some racing and test flights (I've stopped using the word "maiden")

I'll be there shortly after noon, I hope, so I'll see you guys then!  I have nothing to "test" myself, but I HAVE dragged out my old Revolver that needs to be set-up on my radio, so I guess that'll be kind of like a test flight   ;D

Guys,

What a great day today.  It started out cold (5 C) but ended up at 15C by the end of my flying day (2:30pm).

Today, TEMAC members maidened the following airplanes:
- Bobby's green Extreme Flyer.  He maidedend it and then after two flights Ed wrung it out a bit.
- Bobby's Revolver flew fine with 5 perfect landings after last year's landing gear rip-out.
- My Unionville Norseman .46 flew great
- My Chili-Breeze .25  flew great but ran out of aileron trim (minor adjustment needed)
- Michael's new huge Beaver
- Michael's new DC 3
- Simon's 3 new airplanes, including his Slipstream
- Greg H's pylon racer's unsuccessful maiden (lawn dart)
- Fabio's new Nooner with sexy green and yellow paint job.

Thanks to all who helped.

Frank

Looked scary fast just sitting on the bench :)

I decided the ground would be too bumpy this early in the season for the Nemie. Soon!

And yes, Pat, the programming was awesome, thanks. Thank you for all your help. I now need to learn from it.

The only changes we made was to the throws. Was just a bit too wild for me. But it's dialed in now.

Need to sort the elevator mix for landing mode and also I want to experiment more with the thermal mode.

Yes thank you Pat!

You saved what little sanity I have left and the programing worked correctly.  There are a couple little things to work out but I think Ive got them figured.  The amount of down elevator needed to do the full flap/spoiler mode was not attainable in the trim of the elevator.  I think we can put in an offset in the "landing mode" to the elevator and rework the trim from there.  What I did was made the third flight mode a half landing setting with half flaps and ailerons and all the elevator compensation we had available in the trim.  It worked and was easily done on the tx in a couple clicks of the trims.

It was a joy to see the plane fly and to see Simon having a good time with was worth the effort.

Both of those photos are shadowed not only by the wingspan of these two but there quality of flight and build Michael.  Great job!

Try changing the elevator mix from

chx 100% ELE

to

chX  100% ELE no trim
+100%  TrmE

The normal way gives about 25% maximum trow as trim.
If you put it on a separate line then you can get up to 100% trim, with trim by flight mode as before.

The trims will however be a bit coarser this way.

You could do it so that the second line was only active in the landing modes
and leave the trim in the regular mix line.

chx 100%    ELE
+100% TrmE    Flight modes (Landing1, Landing2)

This way the coarser trim steps will only be in the landing modes, where it won't be so critical.
And you can still make all the changes just by using the trim switch in real time in flight.
This also has the advantage that the trims you have already set for the other flight modes will be undisturbed. :)

edit - I should also add that "offset" in a mix line does not move the output, it changes the way the input is read into the mix.
If you want to add a fixed offset to a servo then add another line to the mix for that channel that is enabled only when you want it.

+30%  MAX     Switch (whatever condition you want)

Adjust the weight of the mix to adjust the offset.

But I would go with the TrmE method since you can tweak everything with the trims alone.

Congratulations to everyone who test flew their plane(s) yesterday.

It's so nice when test flights go well so you can enjoy the aircraft for the great flying season to come.

Even easier way to fix the running out of trim throw problem  :-[ :
Simply enable "extended trims" in the first model setup page and the trims will allow you to go to full throw

Now that sounds like my kin of solution, Pat! Thank you.

I'll try that one tomorrow.

Was that Frank face-planting at the end :D ?

Looks like it was a really special day and congrats to all those who maidened!
...wish I had been there.

When you try it make sure the existing trim positions are not altered.

I don't think they will be, but double check in all flight modes just to be sure.

Graham,

"Was that Frank face-planting at the end"

That was me kissing the ground after the successful maiden flight.
