WASHINGTON — It was 42 degrees, lightly raining and pitch black near the White House when an inebriated, off-duty employee for a government intelligence agency decided it was a good time to test-fly his friend's quadcopter drone (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/subjects/u/unmanned_aerial_vehicles/index.html?inline=nyt-classifier) that sells for hundreds of dollars and is popular among hobbyists.

You're making a request for information on the internet.
I'm just wondering what internet source you would rely on better than CNN?

Any.
Actually, terrifyingly, the best source for current information on the internet is Reddit.
Here is the information:
Some dolt got out his DJI toy and decided to get a sneak video over the fences of the White House. He clipped a tiny tree branch and it tumbled to the ground. The ground broke its fall.
This is why DJI should have a sign off on purchase and the serial number be tractable. I suspect its already in the hands of the intelligence and have a feeling the owner will be getting a surprise visit if they don't already know who he/she is.
Wonder why were seeing an increase in tensions regarding drones? I don't!
Hi Ed. The real story's a bit different. The guy turned himself in.

New York Times is better than Reddit? ;D
Ok I have edited my post to make it accurate:
Some drunk dolt got out his DJI toy and decided to get a sneak video over the fences of the White House. He clipped a tiny tree branch and it tumbled to the ground. The ground broke its fall. He claimed it was out of control when it crashed
More surprising news - this time using drone trying to smuggle drugs across the border. (I think it's a hexcopter)
https://uk.news.yahoo.com/drone-loaded-drugs-crashes-near-us-mexico-border-174558453.html#7IB4FuE
Why would they use a multirotor to carry precious cargo? Everyone knows they crash in anything more than a farts worth of wind and that a fixed wing could carry much more payload a longer distance quieter and with much less power. This is why we call drug dealers stupid I guess!~
Ps my works machine can carry +10kg for 20 minutes and has round trip 10km range.....
If you take a vacation in Can-Cun we'll know what your are doing!!!

"Vacation" ?
Why the hell would I come back!
Because you would have all that money and can lord it over us peons!
Jack.
At least until they get their info straight, which can be days, you're better off getting your news from the national enquirer, did a paper for social studies where I had to monitor initial reports from several agencies, then compare to how their own info changed days later. CNN was notorious and still is for jumping to be the first and reporting a 747 had crashed, only to figure it was a Cessna later.

I think the journalist does not know how to operate the drone yet trying to performing the demo indoor.
And in CBC, there was show about quadcopter (drone). Check it out.

The idiot can't fly nose in ::)
Which probably is true for 99.9% of "drone" flyers who could not operate them without the GPS and flight controller doing everything.
