More and more guys have DJI Goggles what allow for awesome HD view from the airplane perspective (I finally got one!!!!). There is also a laser tag system that is designed for laser tag and response/tally hits. Some members of TEMAC are already preparing their set up. I want to officially open Topic for laser tag combat. let me know if you are interested.
what would be best airplane to use for the combat, we need more or less leveled power/speed setup?
what are other ideas you have?
are there any objections to this at TEMAC?
See below how awesome it looks.

@VadimKirillov ,
Wow! Another DJI AirUnit FPV flyer. Welcome to the HD world. :D
Based on the developer, Alex, from Video Aerial Systems, he recommend high wing, biplane, something not too fast.
So, for my setup, I pick the club most famous plane - The Apprentice.
The reason
Its high wing plane. It has a big wingspan. Its not easy to stall. CG is very forgiving. It has a long flight time (12+ mins)
My Apprentice setup
All ESC, Motor, Prop are stock. The only thing I modded were the SAFE R/X to a regular DSMX R/X and changed the battery connector to XT60.
My DJI Airunit will share the battery with the Apprentice - Runs on 3S
For the Combat setup
1) Day mode (Combat has day and night option)
2) I setup in Race mode
3) Only Throttle and Gun are going thru the combat system (Aileron and Elevator will be in the future)
4) LED lights (coming soon)
5) Gun in Gear channel, CH5, with 2 position switch.
For Airunit setup
1) 700mw - I think it wont have an issue
2) 25Mbps - That way we wont limit to 3 players
Maybe we can add the streamer to identify the team(?)
Thoughts?
Looks great Oscar.
I might put mine on my Bixler 1.1. It's fairly nimble, has a good speed range and already has my DJI FPV system on it.
I just built a head tracker module too, so if I'm feeling really adventurous, I may add that with a pan & tilt.....
Simon, do you have a schematic of how you connected head tracking to camera?
Hey Vadim, it was super easy. Took me about half an hour, once I had all the parts. It uses the trainer port and a standard stereo 3.5mm lead in my Taranis. I'm sure it would be the same on a Jumper.
This is the video I used:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9Av10UxBEI&ab_channel=Painless360
And this is the wiki:
https://github.com/dlktdr/HeadTracker/wiki/Nano33BLE-Build-Instructions
The camera on the plane is then just a simple pan & tilt servo set-up connected to channels 6-8. I'll post a pic later of the one I built for my Ranger 1600.
Can anyone share some Air Unit mounts, 3D printed or from a store that work very well with airplane?
I made one out of good old balsa and ply, Vadim. Works great...
Also, home made camera mount on my pan & tilt.
Hi Vadim,
I think the most popular unit I have seen in the club last summer is this one:
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4362741
I printed the V-shaped Antenna holder version half a dozen times, for myself and others.
Its probably not the smallest or lightest by now, but it has that classic "summer of 2020" look....
I have this pan and tilt kit. And I have created a mount for my Timber. Where can I print this 3D mount?
Gil. Are you ready for combat ? All setup ? I still don%u2019t have air unit or caddx vista. There is some shortage of air units.
Vadim,
No need to ask about where to print (Mi Impresura Tu Impresura).
Just send me your STL file let me know if you have a color preference. Pickup of parts available next day during the work week, while I am imprisoned at the office.
I am still not ready for air combat, or flying in general :( As usual, got all the hardware sitting on the shelf but hardly any free time.
Eventually I would like to install the Air Combat Gear on my Night Timber, configured to take damage on the throttle channel, following the "standard" established by Oscar. I also printed an experimental 3 axis pan and tilt based on 3.7g servos (attached photo) but its very flimsy with limited travel span. Will have to create a Version 2 based on 270 deg servos to avoid neck injuries... ::)

@VadimKirillov Vadim,
RotorGeeks sells them. That's where Gil Carlos and I got them. They are in stock (Leslie / YorkMills)
https://rotorgeeks.com/fpv/dji-digital-fpv/dji-fpv-air-unit
https://rotorgeeks.com/fpv/dji-digital-fpv/dji-fpv-goggles-v2
All set-up and ready to test! Not pretty but should work.
Hopefully Oscar and I (and anyone else who is ready) can coordinate a trial flight?
I'm almost ready with FPV system for my Timber. With some help I have new mount for the camera and VTX. That's completely removable and fits in between wings.
Does everyone who plans to be involved in combat has actually ordered the ACE system? I'm planing to order. If someone else wants I would like to make bulk order to save on shipping. Let me know if you are interested.
Simon and I tested the FPV Combat this afternoon.
Here are the highlights

The full combat footage. Thank you Gil for the TPV footage. And Carlos as my spotter

Here's the raw footage from the first full FPV combat flight, taken from my Bixler yesterday, chasing Oscar's Apprentice. It's so hard to locate the other aircraft and the problem is our planes are so manoeuvrable that direction changes cannot be predicted - they are instant. But it was SOOOOOO much fun! ;D
I couldn't let him get away at the end, and was out of ammo, so just had to ram him!!!! Thanks
@Oscar for being such a good sport. :)
Thanks to Ray and Ben for being my spotters during the 2 combat sessions. :)
I'll try to upload the second flight later....

So the combat is full contaƧt sport?!? ;)
Great video.
Thank you for sharing.
Here is another video from yesterday combat.

We did another one last evening - after the student training.

Oscar & Simon,
While watching this with great interest I can't help but notice this high tech Laser Gun combat is devolving into old fashioned Ramming & Colliding matches with increasing level of damage inflicted on your models at each round. It looks more and more like a full contact sport instead of air combat... ;)
Maybe you can bring more dog-fighting realism into this by standardizing all players to the exact same model (say Bixler 1.1 or similar prop-free nose view plane) that will be pre-set with identical limited throws on all control surfaces, resulting is more scale flight by limiting turn radiuses and maneuverability ?
Or would that take all the fun out of it, without the ability to pull a '50G full scale equivalent' suicide turn into your opponent ? :P
Thats what Simon and I discussed earlier too.
One thing we noticed is the motor pausing doesnt seem much of the effect. We are thinking to add the hit respond with the aileron. So when it hit, the plane will rock plus the motor pausing.
Also, we are changing the throw (DR/EX) so its not so aerobatic.
Simon also mentioning getting another Bixler. But getting a brand new Bix seems a bit too much.
I suggest a second hand HobbyZone AeroScout.
We shall see...
