Title: When will flying be allowed? When will TEMAC open.
Post by: Michael on March 06, 2023, 04:23:24 PM
I don't know.

Let's recap, in the simplest terms and based on latest facts.

Several years ago, drones (electric quad copters) were developed and sold to the public, in large quantities. Due to some instances of unsafe usage, certain government agencies put restrictions on their use, and required users to acquire licenses, register their drones, and follow a specific set of rules.

According to the Transport Canada, our model airplanes fall under the category of drones. The Model Aeronautics Association of Canada (MAAC) entered into an agreement exempting MAAC members from these rules. Recently, this agreement has ended. All MAAC members, who wish to fly at MAAC affiliated clubs, or anywhere else, must acquire a basic Remote Piloted Aircraft System license and follow all rules, and must register each aircraft they intend to fly.

As well as having the requirements for the basic Transport Canada RPAS license and registering each of our models that we fly (and following all related rules, including keeping a log of your flights), MAAC has asked all members not to fly at MAAC affiliated clubs until they (MAAC) issue a Safety Operating Certificate (SOC).

TEMAC members can fly when:

- they acquire (and provide to TEMAC) a basic RPAS license,
- fly only model aircraft that have been registered,

and when MAAC:

- gives TEMAC the SOC. and
- when MAAC confirms unequivocally that each member and our club is insured.

That's where we are.

There are links provided to Transport Canada to take the basic RPAS test, and to register your models in other threads, and provided by MAAC. these links can be re-posted here if requested.

Some members have asked about or discussed how they may pass the RPAS exam. The TEMAC position is simply to study, and try, and try again if necessary.

Moving forward, it is TEMAC policy that all members must follow all MAAC, Transport Canada, and TEMAC rules.

A Zoom meeting is being set up to ask questions of the Zone Director and the Deputy Zone Director.

I have been in contact (by email and/or telephone) with each, and it is my opinion that both are working diligently to help us, and I have full confidence in their efforts.

David (our VP) and I will be participating in the Zoom meeting. If any TEMAC members would like to submit a question, if you like, you can send it to David or me.

Only questions directly relating to the re-opening of TEMAC will be considered. We are not interested in pursuing anything political within our related organizations. We're only focusing on when we can open, and how we can help MAAC towards that goal.

Hi Michael,  appreciate the work you and the board is doing to get us flying again at TEMAC.  How would it be best to provide  TEAMC with proof that we have acquired our ROAS license?  Would that be just an email to Mark and what should we include?

Hey folks,

the 250g limit for non registration is the model + battery correct?

If my model is 190g and the battery is 61g, I must register that model to be able to fly it at legally correct?

Hi Chris,

If the take-off weight is 250g or more then you must Register that model and have an RPAS Certificate.

Taking your example, your take-off weight is 251g and therefore Registration and an RPAS Certificate are required.

A more comprehensive response regarding TEMAC Opening is coming out in the next few days.  Stay tuned.
