Title: Boxfly 20- Ton van Munsteren design build
Post by: Frank v B on October 08, 2023, 10:12:25 AM
Just came back yesterday from a family reunion in Holland.  Visited Ton van Munsteren at his house.  Ton is a published model airplane designer and has published many designs in British model magazines.  One of his designs  https://www.sarikhobbies.com/product/mustang-p-51b/
I have built his 2 meter power glider (Red Eagle) and speed 500 midwing design- Chica.

He asked me to test-build his newest design and gave me a kit.  After careful consideration (a nano second!) I agreed to build it.   8)
Had to cut things into pieces to fit into my small suitcase.

Will start this when the snow starts to fly.

Trying to find the "start" button.
Right now my life is a bit of a pain.
Sorry to disappoint.

Ton,

Great to hear from you.  I hope you and your family are doing well.
By now you will have received my e-mail update and excuses why the model has not been built.

It is a project in the New Year (January) to be finished in time for a test flight once the snow disappears.

Just put the final touches on it for the maiden flight in the next week.

Photo 95- installed the receiver and connected everything. (servo horns, adjusted the wigglers so they go the right way and programmed the TX)
Photo 96- the battery bay.  Installed a 40 amp ESC.  Will start with a 2200 3 cell pack.

Ready to go!

The maiden flight went well yesterday.  It took off at half throttle, totally controllable.  It was on 3 cells 2200. Interesting that the plane was very control sensitive.  I usually maiden an airplane with minimum throws.  Just good enough to take off, do a couple of circuits and land.  Yet both the roll and pitch were much more sensitive than I thought.  No problem but that's why I use minimum throws.
(here is my post on "How I maiden airplanes" https://temac.ca/smf/index.php?topic=3826.0).

The plane is simple, responsive and neatly powered ("always over-power an airplane.  You can always throttle back if you have to").

Thank you Ton.  A nice addition to my fleet.

Frank

Photos taken by Andy Hoffer on Wednesday...its second flight.
He asked me to do a knife edge on one pass.  Sure Andy, it is not set up for that!  He did get the photo for the split second it was vertical (photo 74).
