The following topic as about a boat.
Yes, I am building a model Schooner, that is a 2 masted boat.
The sail will be gaff-rigged (square sails).
I decided to post the construction progress as some of TEMAC are also members of the Toogood Electric Model Aquatic Club, who float their creations at Toogood Pond from time to time, generally on Mondays weather permitting.
The plans are from Bearospace Industries, see http://www.bearospaceindustries.com/boats2.html
I have a set of full-sized plans (available at a very reasonable price) should anyone be interested in building their own.
The 11 pictures attached are self explanatory, all built with 1/8 door-skin plywood - cheap and easy to work with.
The ship wheel is controlled by a servo on a "Y" harness with the rudder. See a short video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFFt27iAOGA
Progress (however slow it is) will be posted here. Completion is not expected until the spring, perhaps summer of 2025.
A name for the boat has been decided upon.
After searching Greek mythology, the name Galatea was chosen.
Galatea is the name of a sea-nymph, one of the fifty Nereids (daughters of Nereus) mentioned by Hesiod and Homer.
She is the object of desire of the one-eyed giant Polyphemus.
For clarification: kindly note that « Schooner » is the type of boat, « Irene » is the model of the boat and « Galatea » is the name of this schooner.
Guy,
Why are you doing this to me? Did Frank put you up to this, because it has that "bait" look and feel. I mean, just because I sent you the new Flying airplane listings.....
Andy 😇😅
Guy,
To explain to Andy in reply to his reply:
- a schooner is a two masted boat which has a rear mast taller than the fore mast.
- a 2 masted boat with the smaller mast at the back (stern) is either a Yawl (mast-step behind the rudder post) or a Ketch (mast-step ahead of the rudder post).
This knowledge and $1.65 will get you a small coffee at Tim's. ;D

A bit more progress.
Rudder post fitting started.
More sanding and trimming and yet more fitting prior to gluing/epoxy permanent application.
Similar to planes, yet different. Weight is not an issue - rudder post is solid oak. ;)
Many blocks and double blocks will be required for sail control on Galatea.
Simple and effective, these will be coated with diluted wood glue then stained.
The nylon sheaves rotate and facilitate the smooth movements.
They are strong enough to hold 10 pounds ??? - I will test on one of my other boats. ;)
Plans and instructions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTX_mNjKHm0&t=844s
First coat of primer on the hull really shows the imperfections that will require filler.
Overalls, very pleased with the results.
Every Schooner needs a dory/tender.
The parts are cut out from 3/32 balsa.
The plans calls for 1/32 veneer, but I had none, so....
Next will be bending the sides and gluing.
One coat of epoxy on the Rowing Skiff.
Changed from using 3/32 as this was too rigid and could not bend for the sides.
I found some veneer hiding under my workbench for some 12 or so years.
Details to be added as well as painting, should look the part.
Now 2 coats of epoxy and a bit of detailing.
Happy with the results.

Hey
@Frank v B ,
What discount would I get on a turkey bacon club on a toasted sesame bagel, small coffee with 2 milk and 1 sugar on the side, and an apple fritter?!

Hey
@GuyOReilly ,
Galatea is looking really fine. I love your scratch built epoxy drop sheet!
Looking forward to "sparring" with Galatea with my Robbe Gemini hydroplane!!!

@Andy Hoffer :
The drop sheet is actually the wax paper from a cereal box.
Neither epoxy nor glue stick to it. Great as a drop sheet for painting too.
Galatea will be too precious to do any kind of "sparring", at least in the beginning.

So that means I will have to give chase! Looking forward to it!

Nerve wrecking day.
I had to cut a slot in the hull to fit the keel trunk.
Now alignment and a lot of epoxy.
The 3 hatches and the cabin and done, epoxy coated and after a bit more sanding ready for primer and paint.
Red and green lights will be added after painting of the cabin. A white flashing light will be at the top of the main mast.
No
@Andy Hoffer, it is not the red lamp you see in the picture... ::)
Important progress steps completed.
1- Glued to the deck to the hull.
2- Glued the 3 brass inserts for the sheets. I added wood pieces to solidify and hold the brass tubing, see the red circle.
3- Main mast rigging started.
Next foremast rigging.
Guy,
Looks great. A gaff rig even. The little blocks look great.
I saw the earlier post how you made them. Tedious!
It may be too good for Toogood.
Frank
Well, I installed my sewing machine and gave it a try... I need an expert to make the sails, not a straight stitch in sight. :P
Testing the winch and booms. All work as expected, no snagging of the sheets.
The sails are out being sewn (I have a great sister-in-law ;D ) and should be ready by the end of the month.

Trial fitting the sails (held with green tape).
Happy with the sewing work of my sister-in-law.
Sails are installed and work properly.
I cannot wait for Spring!!

Saw the video - very cool!
Call me for the maiden voyage once the ice softens.
Love the light on the masthead.
Is that for SOS morse code flashing?
Dot,dot, dot, dash, dash, dash, dot, dot, dot but you knew that. ;D

Looking for a club member with a vinyl cutter for a few words to be cut in black.
Any assistance appreciated.
