Storing planes in the garage

Hi Guys. Where I used to store my planes in the basement required passing through the main door to my house, passing through an archway, turning right, turning right again, down the stairs, right at the bottom then through two passageways to the storage room. Ask me how many tails and elevators needed attention after that. So, I decided to rent space in a storage facility up by Rogo field. It costs in the neighbourhood of $1500 a year for their smallest unit. I have been thinking of converting the back of the garage to racks and storing my planes there. Does anyone know if leaving the servos, motor ESC et al in an unheated garage will damage them. I am thinking $1500 buys a lot of electricity for a small oil heater that would keep everything above freezing.

Hey Rob,

I've stored my planes in the garage, year round, for the past 19 years with no negative effect, other than the odd black dot of spider poop. So I would suggest, based on that, that it's fine.  I just take all batteries inside, during the cold months.

However, I AM starting to wonder if my "new" garage will be as safe as my "old" garage.  I've noticed more humidity in our new, detached garage, than in our old garage which was attached and half covered above by a bedroom.  Also, I could leave liquids (pop) near the house, in our old garage and it would not freeze, even in the middle of winter.  I doubt I could do that in our detached garage. 

I'll be able to let you know, pretty soon, if I see any ill effects on the planes after having having spent the winter in the detached garage.  When do you need to decide?

Well, we are off to Mexico for a week, and then when I come back I thought I would devote a day to moving the planes to my garage. Problem is, like a lot of garages, that is where you put stuff you do not have any idea where else to put it. I think it will be a spring project, so that is good news that you have been doing that for so long with no ill effects.

I have an unheated garage where any liquid stored during the winter will freeze solid. I've stored all my planes, minus batteries, out there since 2007 and have never had any issues whatsoever, not even wrinkled covering.

I'm glad to hear someone else has had the same experience.  Yes... I've found that covering tends to wrinkle more when brought inside for the winter.  Something to do with forced air central heating and the resultant dry air, I've heard.

I have some questions in regards to store planes in the garage too. So, apart from the Lipo, the rest (ESC, motor, receiver) can stay with the plane? And does it matter whether its foam  (depon/epo/eps/epo) planes or balsa planes?

Hey Oscar,

I leave all electronics and all types of construction, in the garage year round.  Not a problem.  Just take in the batteries and paint
