Hi all,

I have what may be an odd request: I need someone to fly my Apprentice. I've fitted the plane with a bit of electronics in order to collect flight information: GPS, gyro/accel, height ranging, and servo monitoring. But i'm new to flying and i tend to damage the plane as often as not when i fly it. The intension is to open source the data after collecting it. The software is already open: https://github.com/mlohbihler/manfred/tree/master/manfred

Note that I am not a member of TEMAC. I just live nearby. Is there someone who would be willing to help me with this?

Many thanks in advance,
Matthew

Why don't you stop by on Wednesday night and see us. There will be more than a few apprentices around. And lots of people who know how to fly them.

Not sure exactly what you're looking for, is this one time thing or something else entirely. Anyway, stop by and maybe we can convince you to learn how to fly it yourself...

Takeoffs are optional. Landings are mandatory.

Thanks Mike, i think i'll do that.

Re one time thing, the more data the better, so if people don't mind me hanging about i may be back a lot. :)

Hi Matt,
Too funny that you live near TEMAC. I might just have to come up on Wednesday :)

Hah! I remember now that you said you did RC stuff. Would be great to see you again!

Folks,

Looks like I won't be able to make it out this Wednesday, so i just wanted to thank you all for your help, especially Simon and Oscar. It was a pleasure meeting you all.

Regarding the flight, i did get some data out of it, but it was a bit spotty. It looks like there may be some adjustments i need to make to the rig to make it more reliable (not to mentioned the tail!). But it was a good start.

Thanks again, and i hope to see you again next year.

Regards,
Matthew

It was a pleasure trying to help you. Sorry it wasn't a total success.

It seems a shame to wait until next year - if the weekends are good weather wise then I'm sure someone would be willing to fly your plane!

Best bet - stay connected to us here, on the forum.

Cheers
Simon

Matthew,

If you want to drop by tomorrow (Sunday), we are doing a test flight of the Ryerson autonomous flying model that has GPS, full telemetry and a full data link and download capability.  The test bed flew autonomously earlier this year.  It flew the path scrawled onto the computer screen at the requested height.
Feel free to drop by.  These students know more about telemetry than all the brain power in our club... even Oscar!* ;D

You are welcome Matthew.  The Apprentice is a perfect plane for your project (with the stabilizer gyro built-in).  While you are enhancing your design, may I suggest to move the GPS away from the R/X.  You can mount it behind the wing (outside the fuselage).  This is to avoid interfering each other.  (sometimes the motor and the esc can also interfering the GPS too).  Also, it's best to have the battery connector move back to the bottom (original design).

:D
