Today was the 1st nice flying day in a week.  And the week to come isn't looking too good.  Today was beautiful... warm, sun, very little wind.  I was at the field from about 10:30 to 4:30.
Here's the best from today.  2 guys have been farting around with this foamboard, gas plane for months.  Most of the time it kinda flies.  Today was excellent.

More planes from today...

David,

re: plane-eating tree.

Wrong CG.  Very tail heavy.

Move the CG forward about 1" and it will fly fine... provided the trees duck and the engine stops sounding like it cannot get out of idle. :)

I'm not sure there will be another flight.  Here's a couple more videos...

David,

The tree did the plane a favour.

There was so little damage when it was up in the tree.  It just floated in and nestled on 2 branches.  The whole process was a hoot.  No ailerons on the plane.  Every time it flew and landed there was a cheer.  RIPs Humpty Dumpty Plane.

@davidk , I am glad to see there are good weather fliers down there as well with a sense of humor and pride of accomplishment.

I bet you will see that plane back in the air and possibly in that tree again before you migrate back.

While I know you enjoy flying off of our hard water conditions,  please bring some of the warmer sun back with you so that you won't have to do it again this year when you get home.  I hope that's the case anyways.  But if that's not the case, I won't taking off my skis too soon either.  One never can tell these days.  :o

This is the guy who built, and re-built, this plane.  The guy who flew it is one of 2 go-to guys for maidening everything... and he took no end of ribbing for "landing" this one in a tree.
I'll bring back some warmer, calmer weather... but most of this week the winds are about 20kph.

David,

When I first saw the video it looked familiar.  It appears to be incarnation of the Mud Duck, a trainer model for large engines that came out in the late '90's.  Took this photo of an ad in the May 1998 Radio Control Modeler Magazine.  It looked ugly back then.... and has not improved with age. ;) ;)

Mind like a steel trap.  I'd heard that name in passing yesterday but wasn't paying much attention.  They did say it was the Mud Duck... no question.
Nicely done.  How, on earth, did you find the ad?
$265 for the kit... that seems a bit steep... did that include the engine as well?

Flying Thursday March 5th before meeting for lunch with a number of the Morning Crew.  Once again the weather conditions were perfect.

Craig, Don, Frank and I all had a number of most pleasant flights.  No need for gloves.  Only sun screen.

Frank even claims he caught a thermal.

It's winter. No one flies when there is wind, so a windsock is unnecessary.  If one feels it is necessary to determine the direction of the wind, pick up some snow (like grass) and throw it into the air and watch the direction it moves in.  (Advice for @Frank v B - This works with light fluffy snow only. Heavy snow only goes in the direction it is thrown.) ::)

However, having said that, like other TEMAC members I am looking forward to seeing the new spring/summer windsock and enjoying its accompanying warmer temperatures.  :P

NOTE: I haven't put the skis away yet...
