Title: Beaver "club"
Post by: fprieto on December 18, 2013, 08:46:59 AM
Hey everyone,
I'm glad to say that I'm part of this internal "club".
So many people buying and flying with the floats that I could not resist.
However, just to not be another one in the air with the same colors as the others, I decided to repaint my one. I did not start but my plan is be like this

http://www.modelbuffs.com/mpm/uploads/De-Havilland-DHC-2-Beaver-Bates-Air-BLANK-1.jpg (http://www.modelbuffs.com/mpm/uploads/De-Havilland-DHC-2-Beaver-Bates-Air-BLANK-1.jpg)

Is someone else thinking the same?

Fabiano

Hey Fabi!  I assume you mean you are NOW part of the club.  Well, that's a good, as anything that gets people float flying is awesome :-)

That colour scheme looks very nice.  You're right, we should start adding some personal character to our Beavers.  Just watch that the weight doesn't build up too much.

It's going to be a great summer of float flying this coming year!

Wow looks good. My beaver is the unionville and the eflite version. Just wish that I had the floats installed on either. Or makes it much more fun.

Oh yes.... I'm part of the "club" now...hehe
And yes again... weight can be an issue bur I'm aware about it.

I think everyone should post what they did to customize their beaver.

I'll have to do something before I can post it :-)  Mine is as stock as can be.

He's not part of the "club' so he can't talk about the work he's done on his Beaver.

My wonderful wife surprised me with a Flyzone Beaver for Christmas so I'm posting it here for amusement value. Here's my mods:

equipment:  - replace DOA rudder servo with Hitec HS-65
                   - replace Tactic receiver with a Spektrum AR610.

tarting up:    - painted motor and added "spark plug" wires (stole this idea off the internet).
                   - added decals found while browsing with wife at Michaels craft store.
                   - put on Canadian registration to make Wingnutz happy (used my initials for fun).
                   - added trim sheet and my usual cheapo Canadian Tire pinstripe tape to floats. This makes the plane visible enough so I don't
accidentally fly someone else's plane while mine commits suicide in the lake.

I'm typing this on my wife's computer (my wood burning desktop finally gave up the ghost). It has Windows 8 on it - the worst system ever. I'm hoping the attached pictures can be opened as I can't get them to display when I preview this post.

Hi Wingnutz;

Hope you're enjoying the warmth while the rest of us freeze our (insert rude expletive here) off. I'll go for aviating off the snow if it ever gets above a bazillion below zero with the wind chill. I do have skis I fashioned for a few planes (see attached), but the older I get, the wimpier I become when the temps drop.

Oh yeah, the "C" stands for Charles. I was named after my uncle who was killed in WW II. My first name is a little unusual for an English kid, but my mother was a huge fan of an early film star with the first name of Erica, so Erica i was going to be. She already had 2 boys and was sure I was going to be a girl. When I came out with the wrong plumbing, she gave up, chopped the "a" off the end, and I became Eric. What can you do?

Very nice, Andre!  That looks great!

Did you, or Fabiano determine how much weight was added with the repaint?  The concept is very attractive as we know how well the plane works, and all three of the repaints that we've seen here look fantastic!

I will try to swing by Wednesday to meet you folks, I've been flying for a while near my home in Ajax, a few planes like the Beaver, Super Cub, Extra 300, Cessna 182, etc.. is there an exam in order to fly on TEMAC's field?

To fly alone at TEMAC you must have MAAC wings.

If you need flight training you can fly solo if an instructor is present, once the CFI (Chief Flying Instructor) has awarded you "solo privileges."

Last year we also introduced "Park Wings" for lighter, slower models, but again, in order to qualify for them and fly alone you need to be assessed by the CFI.

Hope this helps.

Hi Andre:

Welcome to the TEMAC Forum.

Further to Simon's last post regarding flying at TEMAC, there is a good description of our flight training program on our web site (http://temac.ca/?page_id=250 (http://temac.ca/?page_id=250)).

Also, as indicated on our intro page (http://temac.ca/?page_id=152 (http://temac.ca/?page_id=152)), all members, in order to fly at TEMAC, need to have a membership in the Model Aeronautics Association of Canada (www.maac.ca (http://www.maac.ca)), which provides liability insurance and other benefits.  If you already have your MAAC Wings from another RC club we would still require you to do a check flight with our CFI (Chief Flying Instructor) to confirm your flying proficiency and understanding of TEMAC field and safety rules.  Once he signs off you are good to go.

Looking forward to meeting you at the next Pilots Meeting (Wednesday, Feb 12) at the 3 Monkeys Eatery, 1585 Warden Ave, east side, just south of the 401 (phone:(416) 609-1511).  As Jack noted  food starts at 6:00pm and meeting at 7:30pm.  I know Jack referred to the 2 Monkeys Eatery, but that's because one of the monkeys really loves winter flying at TEMAC and might still be at the field that night!!  Jack might also be trying to see if I am paying attention!!  ;D

Cheers!

A friend of mine has just aquired a used E-Flite Beaver and though he's been flying for decades is new to electric flight and has asked me for help. Could anyone with one advise as to what servos, motor, prop, ESC and batteries would suit ? (From Hobby King, please, I don't think he wants to pay for the items E-Flite recommends.)

Darn!  I've only got my E-Flite Power 32, E-flite 60-Amp Pro Switch-Mode BEC Brushless ESC , Futaba S3115 Micro Precision servos, APC 13 x6.5 prop and maxAmps 4S4000 batteries for comparison.  You'll have to look for the HK equivalents if you want to go that route, but I would NOT be inclined to send him there, especially given recent discussions about HK in the forum (http://temac.ca/smf/index.php/topic,4462.msg26536.html#msg26536 (http://temac.ca/smf/index.php/topic,4462.msg26536.html#msg26536)).

I believe Frank Van Beurden also has the E-flite Beaver.

The Power 25 will do well for wheels only.  I bought the Power 32 to have the option for good float performance, but it gives GREAT vertical performance off ground.

I used customized vinyl stickers, I don't think the stickers added too much weight, but in any case, I had to paint the whole plane (white)...

I also made another "job" on my cessna....

Friends, sad news... I'm loss of words....  :-\  C-FDTZ died today on its second flight with the new scheme...  apparently an electrical problem....  After a first successful takeoff and landing, the plane died in the air.. no controls at all... it seems it was an electrical problem... ended up in a nose dive.  :'( :'(

I changed both battery and ESC connectors to xt60... I think the connector wasn't properly soldered.... after the crash, the battery wires came out from the xt60 connector, one side I can see pieces of metal wire, but the other connection doesn't have any wires...  :-\

This is soo frustrating... such a hard work to finish this plane.... and now back to ground zero

Yeah, I bought a new beaver the next day... I'm working on the paint again, the good news is, Fabiano inspected the wings, and they are good... so I'm probably only keeping the fuselage + engine, etc...it will take some time.... just in case, I do have several beaver replacement parts (wings, wheel set, rudder, elevator,etc).. I'm accepting offers :)

yesterday I pretty much pushed Fabiano out of his house, I was really looking for a good flight... ended up flying my super cub on skis, while Fabiano flew his Stintson and Beaver... his beaver looks really nice...

Thanks Rob.  I know Jack really gets worked up when I keep flogging TEMAC winter flying (especially if I use the "quote" button), so it's nice when I get help from other informed, progressive flyers.   ;)

Oh, and by the way, there's a whole lot more white water (8-15 cm) coming tonight and tomorrow.  So the white water season is going to be REALLY REALLY LONNNNNGGGGGGG this year!  Hope to see you and your white water floats this weekend - the forecast is fantastic: Saturday: -6C (wnd chill -11C), wind W 15 kmh, cloudy periods; Sunday: -6C (wind chill -10C), wind NW 5 kmh, few flurries).  High snow boots and snow pants are a very good idea (and maybe a toboggan for carrying your stuff in fro the highway).

Is there room in the hanger for another?
I have enjoyed playing with my Flyzone Beaver during this rather prolonged cold winter.
Nothing too fancy, but some personalization and minor modifications.

Here they are:
1.   Changed the battery connector to EC3 (thank you Ron at the friendly LHS!)
2.   Removed the peeling trim tape around the wind shield and sealed it with white silicon
3.   Dressed up the radial engine, similar to Eric's (http://www.rcuniverse.com/magazine/article_display.cfm?article_id=1478 (http://www.rcuniverse.com/magazine/article_display.cfm?article_id=1478))
4.   Replaced the Tactic Rx with Specktrum AR6210 (my first time getting into the electronics, but turned out to be a simple enough task even for me)
5.   Canadian registration markings using decals from the LHS and Canadian flag from Michael's arts and crafts (to clear Wingnutz's Cdn content threshold  ;D)
6.   Some basic painting/detailing of the doors, rudder, floats, and prop tips
7.   Home-made decals using Avery decal sheet on the ink jet printer then clear coat to seal the ink and again to affix to the surfaces (I am curious to see how they last—so far, so good  :))

Winter still wouldn't go away, so why not add a canoe or two?  Oh crap, now they need paddles.  All this 1/10th scale stuff is making me thirsty.  Looking forward to its maiden flight after a thorough ground check.  Am also looking forward to a full scale beer at tomorrow's pilot meeting!   :P ;D

Here's a happy little Beaver jingle.
A neat song and photos, rated "E" for Ed and everyone.

Graham,
As a Canadian flag waving fan of all things de Havilland, I loved the Beaver Ballad! Haven't had time to read or post much lately and really enjoyed the recent posts in this thread. If this snow ever stops and we can make it to tonight's  Pilots' Meeting, I'll buy you that full size as a thank-you! (JUSTGraham!)

I know this thread is supposed to be about the FZ Beaver which I've enjoyed flying all winter on floats, but my scratch built indoor Beaver consistently displays behaviour which I think is called dutch roll. The thing looks like it's trying to "dog paddle" using each wing in turn to scull its way along. Reading I've done says high wing aircraft with dihedral (Beaver) and swept wing aircraft(not Beaver) are prone to Dutch Roll. Anyone have an idea what's going on?
BTW, my FZ Beaver doesn't do this at all, but it does seem to drag its *ss through gently banked turns even with rudder to try to co-ordinate the manoeuvre...again, thoughts?...

I'm not sure, but maybe it needs more fin area?  Note that the fly zone beaver has those finlets on the stab to increase fin area.  May just be a scale feature, but maybe not.

Can I take a snow rain check on that full scale Bill?
The small vertical fins on the horizontal stabs appear to be used only when on floats.  The adverse yaw could be something with the ailerons throws being too far out of balance on the up-and-down travel.  The FZ Beaver manual shows them to be equal.  Now I am going to recheck mine because I think the up travel was about 2mm greater than their down travel.

Had a great time at the swap meet with Simon and Bill as we lined our pockets with gold.
I took home a FZ Beaver.
So I now belong to the Temac Beavers?
I will endeavor to hold up the proud tradition of glassy landings.
Now that I'm in lets not let anybody else join.
Do we have a secret handshake or anything that I should know about?

Ken AKA Skyking

Hey!  I came across this nice video of a Beaver flown from a moving boat.

This type of flying is a lot of fun and you really get a good look at the plane while travelling along with it.

I've done it before and I hope to get a chance to do it some more some day  :)

You might as well watch it with the sound tuned off.  the only audio available is the noise from the wind.

Yep!  FB is ready for float flying!  Take a look at the picture (from Sunday) that I was finally able to upload... in the "Other Events" section of the forum.

Everyone has been taking photos of their models using beer bottles as a size reference.

Here's one of my Hangar 9 Beaver.

Beer is an accepted unit of measure for both length and weight, only if you use Guinness. Example "That model has a 4 Guinness wingspan." Or "It weighs XX Guinness".
