We're float flying more and more each year.  I'm hoping to float fly as close to once a week as possible, between May and September, this summer.

Hey Rob:

Do you ever fly weekdays after work?  Since I am working at Pickering now I will have to try black water float flying this year!!

I'm sure we can work something out  :D

I usually fly floats from pickering beach road.... 5 minutes drive from my home....

Be careful... it's always too close, no matter how far...

Here's the map link to Rob Pike's "summer home" (I think he sleeps there with the sand crabs!), provided last season for flying at Frenchman's Bay.

You'll see lots of good discussion of float flying under "Other Events" (http://temac.ca/smf/index.php/board,27.0.html).

You fly from the open lake?  A very nice place to fly if it's calm enough.

frajolex

yeah, straight open lake  ;D

I've been flying my cub on floats on Lake Ontario :)  I must say, I can't wait to try the spot you guys mentioned in Pickering!

Is there room in the hanger for another?
I have enjoyed playing with my Flyzone Beaver during this rather prolonged cold winter.
Nothing too fancy, but some personalization and minor modifications.

Here they are:
1.   Changed the battery connector to EC3 (thank you Ron at the friendly LHS!)
2.   Removed the peeling trim tape around the wind shield and sealed it with white silicon
3.   Dressed up the radial engine, similar to Eric's (http://www.rcuniverse.com/magazine/article_display.cfm?article_id=1478)
4.   Replaced the Tactic Rx with Specktrum AR6210 (my first time getting into the electronics, but turned out to be a simple enough task even for me)
5.   Canadian registration markings using decals from the LHS and Canadian flag from Michael's arts and crafts (to clear Wingnutz's Cdn content threshold  ;D)
6.   Some basic painting/detailing of the doors, rudder, floats, and prop tips
7.   Home-made decals using Avery decal sheet on the ink jet printer then clear coat to seal the ink and again to affix to the surfaces (I am curious to see how they last—so far, so good  :))

Winter still wouldn't go away, so why not add a canoe or two?  Oh crap, now they need paddles.  All this 1/10th scale stuff is making me thirsty.  Looking forward to its maiden flight after a thorough ground check.  Am also looking forward to a full scale beer at tomorrow's pilot meeting!   :P ;D

Here's a happy little Beaver jingle.
A neat song and photos, rated "E" for Ed and everyone.

That looks like just about enough beer for one of the funflys!
Very cool job on it
Yea 400W/lb should about do it.. But wouldn't a nice round 500 be better?

Ha ha ha.  Thanks Jack.
I suppose "Fussy" is better than "Fuzzy",... or perhaps it was a typo?? ::)

We could just call you Fudge McNicoll from now on! Lol

Graham,
As a Canadian flag waving fan of all things de Havilland, I loved the Beaver Ballad! Haven't had time to read or post much lately and really enjoyed the recent posts in this thread. If this snow ever stops and we can make it to tonight's  Pilots' Meeting, I'll buy you that full size as a thank-you! (JUSTGraham!)

I know this thread is supposed to be about the FZ Beaver which I've enjoyed flying all winter on floats, but my scratch built indoor Beaver consistently displays behaviour which I think is called dutch roll. The thing looks like it's trying to "dog paddle" using each wing in turn to scull its way along. Reading I've done says high wing aircraft with dihedral (Beaver) and swept wing aircraft(not Beaver) are prone to Dutch Roll. Anyone have an idea what's going on?
BTW, my FZ Beaver doesn't do this at all, but it does seem to drag its *ss through gently banked turns even with rudder to try to co-ordinate the manoeuvre...again, thoughts?...
DOWN WITH GRAVITY! UP WITH LEVITY!

I'm not sure, but maybe it needs more fin area?  Note that the fly zone beaver has those finlets on the stab to increase fin area.  May just be a scale feature, but maybe not.
