Here is a suggestion @Michael how about attaching them to the fuse sides instead of hanging from the bottom of the wing? This may simplify the esc and wiring.

Last act- install the aileron servos. Ordered metal gear Hitec BB servos from John's Hobbies and they came in.  Glued the servos to the round ply plates supplied by the kit, added hardwood braces around each servo and glued them into the wing slots*.  Tested it and covered them with film.

Ready for the maiden flight. That will be done on a nice warm day with Glenn's help.  He has offered the help of his crate on wheels.  His large glider launching dolly.  ;D

Frank

* note to self- next time brush some vaseline on the servo output arms.  The epoxy ran and glued the servo arm in place...solidly.  It took an hour of cutting and prying to free the servo arm.

Building / Construction / Carbon Cub Snowy
Last post by davidk - March 02, 2025, 05:14:36 PM
This is a design by Marko Roolaid.  Video can be found here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F0BxTyW8jn0

He prints it with LW-PLA and Carbon Fiber but I don't have a machine that can print CF so I'm printing in PETG.

He wanted to bring the standard method of building into a 3D printed world and so we have a classic rib design.

The wing and tail are covered with a hot laminate film which is 30 microns - a bit thin, but that's what he's using.  Michael is covering this for me and it looks pretty good.

This little cub will be on printed skis.

3mm CF tubes and 1.2mm CF robs are used in wing.  The ribs are all printed and a printed width guide ensures proper spacing.  The centre rib is PETG with all other ribs LW-PLA.

The wing is under construction (easier than the fuselage, but still challenging). Before the wing is finished, I need to figure out how the EDF units will be attached.

Where did you find the 8-sided coin to make all these decisions?

Any build is a good build.  Happy gluing.

Frank

ps: I have the parts inventory if you wish to complete any of the other small planes.  Just let me know.

Gee, we finally got some real winter.

With nice brisk cold, great winds, and REAL snow.  Why would anyone want to kick that to the curb so soon?!! 😂😇

The thought process about available choices are indicated below:
1- T40 Firefly – 45 to 60 (glow engine) 56" wingspan. Too big, would need a larger motor than what I currently have available and I lack space for storage.
2- 1941 Playboy Sr. – old-timer type plane. I already have a few (4) old timers ready to fly.
3- Flite Test Mini Scout or Mini Vector. Small and uses micro servos, small motors, not available in my parts inventory.
4- Robbe Disco – 1.3 meter glider, 2 channels. WINNER!! This will be using available Rx and servos (mini not micro) and will be modified to have an existing power pod mounted on the top of the wing centre section.  A new build will be started soon.
5- 3-meter Scooter glider "MADE IN CANADA". Very large at 3 meters, no storage place. Difficulty in modifying it to have some form of power pop or in the nose (very narrow fuselage). Although, I love the "MADE IN CANADA" aspect.
6- Sig Tri-Star – Canard plane foam wings, 5 size glow. Pusher plane with canard, tricky build, maybe for next winter project.
7- Ascender – old-timer type plane. Needs all kinds of sticks, rather large wingspan resulting in storage issues.
8- Curtis Jenny – approximately 60 inches wingspan, scratch build from plans (no picture). However, would require a large number of identical ribs and ½ ribs to be cut. That would be nice, maybe in a few years when I can source some laser cutting of ribs.

So there you have it.
Yes @Michael I will have fun building and modifying it.  Thank you for the encouragement.

This is the second time I've built a model airplane by Dancing Wings. I am truly not impressed by a few aspects of these kits. Although it is laser cut, so far I had to trim and file almost every tab and slot, and some strip-wood was missing. Also, the instructions are not easy to follow, and the instructions are poorly translated to English.

I could only recommend these models to someone with a lot of building experience.

Regardless, I'm pretty sure I'll end up with a good flying model.

I've decided to stick with the tail-dragger landing gear configuration. It may look unusual on a twin EDF model, but retracts or tricycle landing gear might be too much of a modification for a smaller size plane like this.

Anyway, the fuselage construction is done. I do like the canopy/battery-hatch, which is held on with magnets (supplied). The nose is unfinished, as it will be modified later.
