Lately, someone asked me about a first EDF, so I thought I would post my reply here to help others who may be thinking about getting a "jet"  :)

My first jet was a Starmax 64mm F-18.  It flies superbly, it is so precise and can be slowed down so much.  I love it.  But....I did have to upgrade the motor and ESC to get any decent performance out of it, and make the battery bay larger.  So it flies nice, but needed mods.  Freewing have just bought out a new version of the F-18 in 64mm size that should be OK straight from the box, in terms of motor and ESC.

Otherwise, a nice jet is the Hobbyking T-45.  It flies great is very stable, but less exciting vs. the F-18.  Most people recommend changing the ESC to a 60A and using 4S; the stock motor will handle it. Then it becomes a bit more exciting. The horizontal stab is a little weak, and benefits from some reinforcement with a little carbon flat rod. https://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__12942__T_45_Goshawk_R_C_64mm_EDF_Jet_EPO_Plug_n_Fly.html

But lately, Michael & I have been having great fun with our little E-Fllite micro jets.  He has the Habu and I have the Mig.  With the AS3x they fly like a bigger jet, and you still get 4-5 mins of flight, which is usual for an EDF.  And of course you can get spare parts.  In fact, I like my little Mig so much that I have just ordered the new micro Habu that is coming out in November, which is red & white like a Military trainer.

You could stick with E-Flite/Parkzone and get the bigger Habu (note: didn't know it was discontinued).  I know Michael loves his and has a great time with it.  And Rob Pike flies a Multiplex Twister, which looks to fly very well - I do rate Multiplex planes for their quality and flight characteristics.

I agree with Simon.

The new Micro Habu seems like a perfect first EDF.

Inexpensive, has AS3X, now has "SAFE" technology, can be hand-launched or take off and land with wheels, and flies very well.

And I love the HK Vampire.  Very stable, not too fast but still exciting.

I saw Gordon fly his Vampire; he's right; it's a great flying and stable jet.
