Which GWS Formosa?

At the field last Wednesday, Michael and Frank recommended me to get a foamie like the GWS Formosa to fly while I'm training on my balsa T-34.

I've found two GWS Formosa and I think the 35" is the one they were talking about: http://www.greathobbies.com/productinfo/?prod_id=GWS1095

The other one is 42.5" and is called Formosa II:

Will I be okay with the 35"? Will it handle some wind?

I still have to dig through other forums, but which brushless motor and ESC would you recommend with a 3S Lipo 1200 to 1500mAh? I'm planning to get the motor, ESC and batteries from HobbyCity, in case it matters. The receiver would be an AR6100e.

Thanks!
Sergio

The smaller Formosa.

I'm not familiar with Hobby City motors, so I'll let someone else answer that.

Here is a Hobby city motor that would not be strained in your formosa.
I would couple it to a 20 or 25A controller and I think it will be bullet proof.

I have the 35" one... heres a pic:

This plane handles the wind really well. The only thing I found that I had to get used to was that it is VERY responsive. You have to really pay attention to it, but really it was no problem for me to fly. In fact it was my 2nd plane.

I am using an E-flite park 450 with a Castle Creations Thunderbird 18A ESC and an APC 10x7 prop. A 3S 1600 Mah lasts a long time with this setup.

This setup is a bit pricey, but I did it before I found out about HobbyCity :)

Here's a good motor I think?

EDIT - or the one in the post above :)

Good morning Sergio,

I would recommend using the mounting bracket supplied with the motor. It's sturdy and easy to mount and is nicely machined. You may have to epoxy a fire wall of 1/8th LitePly to mount the bracket. Be careful to include any offsets when mounting the motor.

After googling what "liteply" was :), I'll get this one which seems to be a good match: http://www.greathobbies.com/productinfo/?prod_id=P12L186

Also, should I get those carbon fiber rods/tubes to strengthen the wings/body or is it overkill for this plane?

Thanks again :)

Hi Sergio,
I read the manual for this model and it has a fiber glass reinforcement that fits in a groove in the bottom of the wing. That should be all you will need.

Hi Sergio,
You might consider building it without the undercarriage if you plan on flying from TEMAC. Talk with Clair and go with his advice.

Great, so I should be good to go now. Regarding the landing gears: yeah, Michael and Frank also mentioned not to install them and just hand launch it. Besides, they look kind of ugly :)

Yes you will have a lot of trouble on the grass with that plane with landing gear. Its very easy to hand launch.

I am using a stick mount. There is already a channel in the foam "firewall" for the mount, so I just gorilla glued it in there.
Looks like this:

I will bring my formosa out this week, so you can take a look.

Planning on flying probably Monday and Tuesday if work doesnt get in the way.

See you there if you make it!
