For those interested in helping to improve the field at TEMAC (basically fill in the holes where wheels sometime get stuck), this is what I've come up with (with input from Glenn and John).

Instead of buying soil (I don't even know how much we'll need), we will take soil from the areas surrounding our field, and fill up a wheelbarrow (which Glenn will bring), mix the soil with pete moss (John's suggestion; I will get a big bag), and manually fill the holes and cover with grass seeds (John will supply).

Obviously, we'll need some shovels, so bring one or 2 along.

If we can get about 10 people working, and maybe a couple extra wheelbarrows, we can probably make a major improvement within 2 hours.

I'd like to do this this coming Sunday April 27, starting at about 10:30 or so, but I need confirmation of helpers first.

Please reply in this thread.

Depending on how many helpers we have, I'll confirm everything on Thursday.

I'd be willing to help out. I can bring an extra shovel as well. See you then.

Michael, John K. and I went up yesterday and did precisely that. We put in about 4 hours and got most of the major holes and ruts filled.Upon closer examination, the ground is really compacted and giving the grass a hard time to fill in the voids. I suggest the fastest route to a good field this year is to rent an aerator and run it over the field (portion most used) and layer of top dressing and seed. We searched around the area and we can get a load of top dressing delivered this week end . This is the same top dressing mix Guaranteed weed free)used by local golf courses.I'm willing to work supplying wheelbarrow, rake, shovel and elbowgrease.Someone however has to arrange the aerator rental locally (4hours) first.
When we talked about using local soil mixed with peat moss ,I visualized easily dug, friable soil. What we have there is heavy wet clay that hasn't been tilled for over a year. Most of our effort went into digging the soil, removing the many weeds and trying to make it fine enough to mix with the peat. We put on about 6 wheelbarrows of soil on the field, and it looks like nothing was done[:)]
If you or someone can arrange the rental of a core aerator for Saturday morning we can start the project Saturday.

Thanks Bruce.  I can't be involved (unless my schedule opens up a bit), but maybe someone else will take you up on your offer.

But don't forget that Michael was talking about SUNDAY, everyone.  Saturday is the EMFSO Dome Fly!!!!  [:D]

I'm really sorry to be a "piker" but this weekend is out for me due to a longstanding commitment. If there's fieldwork to be done the following weekend I'm all over it!

We aren't getting enough volunteers for this weekend.

Look for a post later this evening.

Maybe next week then.

I'm going up now to enjoy some good-weather flying, and to check out the field.

I've been told that the work that John and John did is excellent.

I'll post again later.

The field is looking very good. John and John did some really nice work, and we should all finish the job.

Let's plan for next weekend (first weekend in May).
